8755596 No.8755596 [Reply] [Original]

After owning and loving the SNES and N64 Mario Karts I rented Double Dash when it first came out. But I felt utterly disappointed for some reason, never bought it and never even played it ever again. I truly thought it was a massive step down from Mario Kart 64, which I played incessantly.

Was I wrong? Should I give Double Dash another chance? I ended up returning to and liking Mario Sunshine and Wind Waker after 20 years, think I’d feel the same about this one?

>> No.8755603

it was a bit of a change but i liked how it played, karts feel a little weightier

>> No.8755637

Imo karts do feel a bit "looser" than in N64 but I personally like it more than N64 and ESPECIALLY snes (snes mario kart is pretty ass imo)

Wii and 8D are the best ones but DD is a lot of fun.

If you actually have/had a friend who liked playing backseat, it's a lot of fun. Luckily I had one.

Side note, apparently DD has a bad reputation these days? I was never big on MK even though I enjoyed it a lot and got a bunch of playing time on it, but DD got 9s and 10s galore when it came out and every time people came to my house, including the normalest of normalfags they always wanted to play it. I recall a great reputation on the internet too at the time.

Yeah I've always felt DD was considered by most to be the greatest MK of all time, even though I personally disagree (i think 8D is the best, especially with the DLC coming out). However, nowadays Wii has been making a huge resurgence, especially with all the mods and custom tracks. DD also plays quite a bit differently than the newers games in terms of how drifting works.

On one hand MK Wii is pretty souless, the music is not that memorable and the menus and characters look sterile, I mean just look at that title screen. On the other hand look at what they did to Coconut Mall on the latest dlc, fucking negative soul. That really put things into perspective.

>Not just graphically but the Kart designs were ugly too to accommodate for two people.
>Having two characters in 1 Kart is neat in theory, until you realize how it limits your kart options
>You think you have a big roster, until you realize that you can't have character select repeats so god forbid you play 4 player there's no characters left since you have to have 8 characters selected
>Character specific items sound cool in theory, until you realize just how utterly unbalanced this makes the game. There are clear winners and clear losers in what item you want, especially when you unlock the toads. This makes the issue I noted above about the character select even worse because multiple people are going to be egging to pick the same view characters
>Kart handling was always the most awkward in this one

When Double Dash first came out I hated it. Still to this day I don't like it. Many consider it the greatest now, and I can understand why. It's extremely chaotic in all the right ways, especially with the character specific items. So I've come to appreciate it somewhat over time. But still, not really a fan.

i sort of agree, i think to a point the gamecube Mario aesthetics got really tired... especially with all the spin-offs. DD, Mario Partys 4, 5 and 6, Tennis, etc, etc etc. Compare that to the Mario Party 64's arttstyle which was great.

oh and also the fact that the CPU doesn't randomize partners in single player is laughable. I recommend trying Double Dash again. Everyone deserves a second chance, right? Yes, it's different, especially from 64. Adjusting will be hard as it's an entirely different style of Mario Kart from Kart control to the item system. You have to master switching items and such as well as learn to adapt to the chaotic nature of the specials. It's a fun game, but to say you'll glide right into the new playstyle is just incorrect. Give it time and learn the nuances. While you're spending time adjusting to the control and new systems, take some time to appreciate what Double Dash borrows from Sunshine. Double Dash's environments share a key trait with Sunshine's in that you can see one course from another. Mushroom City can be seen below rainbow road, Daisy Cruiser is in the ocean around most levels with a visible ocean, and there are advertisements for other courses in the courses. Double Dash's world is very lived-in. Play around with your strategy too. Each set of characters has their own unique special item so mixing and matching to have the items you want in your arsenal. Character selection goes a very long way in this game beyond how fast you go, it determines your offensive and defensive powers. If you really sink your teeth into it and invest in learning how to really play it, like you did with 64, I'm convinced you'll find something special.

All of the tracks you listed are basically squares, they aren't fun. The Mario Sunshine aesthetic that runs through the game is awful and not fun and not mario like. but that's just a difference of personal opinion on both our parts so that doesn't really matter. the two driver system isn't nearly as deep as you make it out to be, it's all a matter of hitting a powerup box with one character, and then switching to the next character before you hit the next powerup box so you have two powerups. it's not complicated whatsoever and like in every other mario kart game you main the characters with good specials and ignore the rest, so there really is no strategy in driver selection. yeah you can go back and play it, but as others have said you can't select individual courses, so you are stuck playing a bevy of poorly design levels just to play one good one, so what is the point when you can play the good courses in other versions, there is no need to go back to this one.

Seems like every lauded GC game has been getting a bad rep that I feel it's due to nostalgia wearing off with a bit of ironic contrarianism mixed in.
/v/'s sung DD, Sunshine and Sonic Colors' praises for years as well as other games, but people are noticing the cracks or when an e-celeb points them out so now the tides have tabled.

The reverse is also true too, since now you have people likely Zoom Zooms defending games like Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic Heroes.
It's gotten really sad at this point when the only way for kids to get attention now online is to knock a glass jar off the table and SWEAR you didn't do it because ironic counter culture. ;^)
