8762809 No.8762809 [Reply] [Original]

Just bought pic related as a somewhat impulsive purchase, i dont even play ps2 that much, but i kept hearing how great the image looks on these component cables, so i bit the bullet and bought one over the fear of it going out of stock again.
How badly did i fuck up /vr/?
(I dont have a crt, but my flat screen does have component input)

>> No.8762817

PS2 games will still look like shit but not as shit as composite.

>> No.8762818

PS2 is supposed to be played on a CRT through component cables. Let me say it again: PS2, CRT, component cables.
So you didn't fuck up by buying the cables but you're only halfway there.

>> No.8762821

>>8762809
You didn't fuck up provided you didn't have component cables before. Unless you did, then you paid 35 dollars for no benefit. Also these go in and out of stock, but they'll always be around.

Having played Dreamcast via VGA, Xbox via component cables, and Gamecube games through a Wii with component cables, I really can't cosign this. It is in fourth, maybe third place only ahead of the Dreamcast.

i have a multiconsole cable i use with both my wii and ps2 and the ps2 is far, far sharper, which i prefer. i do want to get proper good xbox component cables someday... ive only ever had the real shitty ones.

>>8762821
OP here again, i specifically bought these component cables because i read online that the cheap chink made ones were garbage/had poor image quality.

>> No.8762916

Is component really that much of a difference? The CRT I have hooked up right now is a 27-inch Panasonic that has composite. I do have a similarly sized CRT in my garage that has component though, but it still only does 480i. I'm guessing colors will be a little better, but I don't think it'd be much sharper if it's not doing progressive

Component is noticeably sharper than composite, has better colors and doesn't have a dot-crawl effect.

Not badly at all, OEM component cables are more expensive than the HD Retrovision ones, and buying cheap off-brand ones give you horrible audio hiss. I know from doing it myself and then returning the off-brand ones to buy these, really good purchase although calling it "HD" is pretty bullshit marketing.

>>8762916
composite to component is a much larger difference than 480i component to 480p component, its a huge deal.

image is much sharper and cleaner and the colors are a lot more defined, composite is honestly horrible in comparison and its a wonder why it was the standard for so long.

I've seen /vr/ posters say there's little difference to the naked eye and I can confirm it's not even noticeable unless your hyper autistic like MyLifeInGayming. I have the official PS2 and a basic chink brand component cables don't notice a difference.

>>8762916
Granted if you're lucky to have a CRT and vidya that supports 480p, it looks noticeably sharper and colorful compared to composite, Xbox especially. Not sure if it's due to the AV converter box's magic, but I was pretty surprised with the image quality nonetheless when playing Halo.

>> No.8763109

>>8762865
Ok well you bought them anon. Compare your cables with the retrovision ones and see if you can tell the difference. Don't know why you need us to tell you if they're better when you can just check if they're better.

>> No.8763846

>>8763001
The main reason to get quality cables is the audio, not video. The grounding on cheap cables is usually loose and leads to a noticeable hiss.

Also component is far sharper than composite even if your TV/game doesn't support 480p. In fact even if you can get your hands on an EDTV CRT I wouldn't ever recommend it, they all have noticeable input lag. One of the best parts about having a CRT is the lagless experience.

>> No.8763851

no you didnt fuck up, its fine, dont listen to the autists that came in just to tell you to invest even more money on more complicated setups that you wont even care about

>> No.8763906

>>8762809
It’ll look ok, depending on the game, if you can force 480p on GSM they’ll look better
However I would at least recommend an upscale if you plan on using an LCD

Both component and s-video are much, much sharper than composite. Colors are better too, but that's secondary to clarity.

Why not just buy official cables for that price?

>> No.8764806

I never understood the point of these HD retrovision cables. They're meant to be the "cheaper" alternative to official PS2 cables but they still sell them for like fucking 50$. What they should really be making is some Xbox and Gamecube component cables.

>>8762916
The jump from composite to component is night and day. The picture is literally 3x as clear as composite. If you can enable progressive scan too it'll seriously just look like an HDMI connection but you'll still see the difference immediately without it.

>> No.8765715

>>8764806
They’re not meant to be a cheaper alternative
They’re supposed to allow Americans to use the RGB line with component
They’re also better shielded and likely the highest quality you can buy

PS2 looks like SHIT via component. I DARE you to tell me Final Faggot X actually looks good. Only something like 10% of PS2 games supports 480P. Now Guilty Gear, that looks great, but that actually supports 480P. For component, it's the worst system of that generation.

the main draw of component video is not progressive scan, it is the signal having more bandwidth which improves quality at any resolution.

>> No.8767720

Here in the UK component wasn't really a common input on CRT. We had the red, white and yellow composite, rf and scart (which could carry composite or RGB).

Thinking I could get a superior display playing PS2 on my flatscreen Bravia 42" HDTV I bought official PS3 component cables and hooked it up. Boy was I wrong. I tested Valkyrie Profile and other games versus RGB scart on a 32" Sony wega CRT and CRT wins hands down. PS2 just has muddier colours on a flatscreen modern TV. I also have the builtin subwoofer on the wega as a nice bonus.
