Much more difficult than 20x6 yet it plays so much more smoothly.

I didn’t get too much of a slaughtery impression from the secret maps, maybe the second one? Map19, Bingo Pool Hall of Blood is certainly much closer but it’s still lacking the obscenity you’d see with slaughtery monster counts.
I also will admit I might have a skewed frame of reference of what classifies as a “slaughter” but I felt BTSX1 was nowhere near as crazy as say Alien Vendetta’s middle maps.

The enemies of Complex Doom Clusterfuck. Dogshit balance all around, no sane individual likes dealing with monsters that wield BFGs and room clearing nukes. ESPECIALLY when the server is set to survival with one life only and everyone dies except for one guy. Then everyone has to spectate and watch this one peckerhead go through a map for 30+ minutes, constantly having to use doorfighting and peeking around corners to kill shit in the lamest, most tedious way possible even though he has absurdly overpowered weapons himself.

How the FUCK does anyone enjoy this? There's a big community for that particular freak mutation of Complex Doom, I want to know what fucking hole these people have crawled out of so we can seal it up and ensure mods like this don't get made again.

true, true. though for me it was also about the sheer amount of progression it has, lasting through 30+ maps and then some, but i suppose it`s more of a result of it just being a massive messy pile of content. there`s a bloke on YT that tries to rework CF to make it less of a mess, but there`s been no updates for months, so that`s still away.

I'd say it's a similar situation to those 100% Difficulty Anti-Rush Sven Co-op servers.
You get 24 people into a server who have all played the mapsets countless times. Everyone's going to speedrun to the exit while easily killing or avoiding everything because they already know what's there. So in order to make it less predictable and easy, you continually ramp up the encounters and punishments for failure until you have something that hardly resembles what it's based on.
Personally, I preferred MoP for my z& slaughter shitfest, but I haven't seen anyone play it in years.

I did not like Sam 3 when it was first out, I actually didn’t like any of the Sam games back then. A few years ago I got into 3 through Fusion, it clicked so well with me I rushed into TFE and TSE on Serious and had a blast.
What I can’t get back into from that time has so far been Quake 4. It’s ugly, slow, and started to adopt some of those gross mid 2000s shooter tropes.

Yeah Quake 4 looks eh, I've tried going back to 2000s shooters, mainly Castle Wolfenstein, Call of Duty, and Medal of Honor (I have a thing for WWII shooters) and the campaigns really don't hold up, without the cutscenes these games can't really stand on their own two feet and I much more enjoy going back and watching these games on youtube, either all the cutscenes in a single vid or just longplays, than actually going back and playing them

If you can run it then do give it a try, it's paced so much better than 3 could ever dream of. The game actually starts the moment you spawn in the first level, unlike 3 which takes a few levels.

There were definitely disagreements over the direction of TNT2, IIRC. Part of why Revilution was formed was because of some people wanting it to be full of drake o'brien worship, where as TNT2's leader at the time felt that was only a very small part of TNT, and that TNT had a lot more shorter levels than people want to admit.
Of course, the finished version of Revilution doesnt quite resemble what Revilution was originally formed for, though, as I do remember Kyka went MIA for many years and was finished without him (Its only recent that hes active again).

I beat Serious Sam 3 and now I'm playing Serious Sam 2 (which is retro fyi)

Serious Sam 2 is weird, it's a beautiful game, and the cartoony look is much more in line with SS1 than 3 and 4's visuals, which I think are too gritty and boring, and the humor doesn't bother me, neither does Netty talking to you while you're playing, but the game is very much a product of its time, series of scripted events and turret/vehicle sections, out of place physics puzzles, but it's not bad, it just seems like both 2 and 3 have problems that don't make them terrible but just very different and unevenly paced (they both have pacing problems in their own way) and your enjoyment of both of them has to do with what you specifically do and don't mind about the games

The designs of the weapons in 2 are great though, gatling gun shotgun is hilarious

Very true. Every single Sam game after TFE & TSE is seriously botched in one aspect or another. In my personal rating I place BFE third because I value good gameplay, and with Fusion fixes SS3 gives the best experience after classics IMO. Visually it's ass but hey, unlike asset flip that is 4, BFE at least has it's own style.
2 looks incredible but something's wrong with combat in it. I can't pinpoint what exactly. Don't feel the same excitement of strategic monster popping like classics, more like Painkiller'esque mindless shooting. Maybe it has something to do with enemy roster & how perfect it was in TFE/TSE? Dunno.

SS1 as far as I can tell is really only as good as it is because of the extended development time and long playtesting period, I think Serious Sam is just one of those things where the gameplay is so simple and straightforward that the only way to make it standout is by making the experience extremely well playtested and replayable, Classicvania is another example, without the great music, visuals and level design you'd have really standard platformers

BFE Fusion is solid once you get past the city levels, but what's weird is that yeah, SS4 somehow looks worse, it's like every game the developers say "hey what's the most visually boring locales we could use?" and get better and better at it, SS3 at least has a style that's halfway between TFE and Call of Duty 4, and I like the monster design in SS4, but the environments look ass

Serious Sam 2 is weird, it feels more like a shooter of the time than a Serious Sam game, I like that they wanted to try new things, and they didn't want to just repeat what they did in the first game, but it so far just feels like a series of scripted stuff with dumb cutscenes in the middle, I think that Croteam didn't realize that people didn't like Serious Sam 2 because of the fact that it essentially has a non-story and it's a slog, not because of the cartoonish artstyle, people like Serious Sam 1 Xbox and Next Encounter, so I wish they didn't throw out the baby with the bathwater and get rid of the colorful style entirely, even if they didn't make things cartoony again I wish they'd make them colorful

>> No.8761250

>>8761240
I want to add to this, I just started playing Serious Sam HD

I think this is genuinely the most pointless, worst entry in the entire series, I think people give it a pass since now they mostly just get it as part of a Serious Sam pack and treat it as just another way to play SS1, but it's a terrible way to play SS1

Just like SS3, they drained the game of most of the color, the new lighting and shadow systems make it really hard to see anything that isn't brightly lit, making kleers almost impossible to see in darkness, they fucked with the secrets and rextextured them so secrets that were originally just abstract and hard to find, like a bouncepad that was just in the corner of a level and not textured differently, or the hidden valley in sand canyon, where you have to jump up rock textures on the side of a sand mountain to find a secret path, are now textured distinctly to make them stand out in the scene, the bouncepad is now clearly not a part of the floor with a different texture, and the walkable path on the sand dune is now marked with sand textures, as well as the player literally being able to walk up to the path entirely and not even have to jump up it, making it extremely obvious where the secret is

This whole series is a mess, every single release after SS1 is plagued with problems and it seems like Siberian Mayhem is treated as a return to form, and it's not even made by Croteam

I think the enemy roster is probably the most important part of any gameplay mod. A common sentiment for a long time was that gameplay mods need maps designed around them to work well, but I think it's more that they just need a new enemy roster that's been given as much attention as the weapons. Giving the player new tools but making them fight the same stock Doom 2 enemies is rarely an interesting experience.

Funny, this is exactly what I thought while trying out NE recently. I have a hard time ranking it among other Sams. Like 2 it's mostly a mindless arcade where target prioritization doesn't matter much, BUT there's a saving grace - combo system. It's like Painkiller's demon mode but done right, forcing you to be as active in battle as possible.
It looks good. Not gorgeous like 2, but a nice continuation of historical eras theme from classics.

There's a coop mod, but the creator refused to add server savegames because his idea of fun is doing it in a single playthrough, and he didn't want to ruin that artistic vision or some such. So his compromise was that if you pick up partway through the game the server just distributes nanites or whatever amd randomly picks whatever player choices may have been made.

>Just like 200 minutes, but with more time. A much more polished set overall, while keeping the goofy charm of its predecessor.
Combined Arms
>Pick from 4 classes and blast away with some of the most unconventional weaponry made for Doom. Wacky, polished, and fun as hell.
Malefactors
>The monster counterpart for Combined Arms, run them together to crank the crazy to 11, or you can load them with most other map sets to inject a little more challenge and lunacy into your gameplay.
HFFM
>A tribute to the Gachimuchi subculture, featuring extensive asset replacements and loaded to the brim with hard, fast... fabulous maps? Sleep tight, Aniki.

This is my second playthrough of the map. I mistyped my record argument.
Really short, really easy. For a first attempt, it's not terrible. You have the idea of making the player return to an older area down, but it leaves a lot of room to be expanded upon.
That Baron that rises up from the pool isn't a threat in the slightest. Barons and Hell Knights are best used when they limit movement. They don't make for good turrets because they only fire a single projectile at a time and it's dodged easily. You could also consider opening up a monster closet near the blue switch to give the player something to do between the Baron and Revenant.

>> No.8762871

>>8762808
Short and easy, but largely inoffensive. I like the visible door in the secret area cluing the player in to how to get there, but was mildly annoyed that the blue door didn't open from both sides when I went to go get it. To add to what >>8762840 said, the walls of the well could have been slightly lower and the revenant would have been a stronger threat, since it would allow his rockets to pass over it.

>> No.8762880

>>8762871
I think just simply swapping the Baron and Revenant would suit each of their roles better. The Baron blocks the exit switch while the Revenant would actually be able to hurt the player.
Optionally, replace the Baron with 2 Hell Knights behind the Blue door.

Not bad at all for a first try. I like the castle, Plutonia map01 aesthetic. Besides what others said, I would add that the opening area is poorly designed because if you shoot at the first grunt, the monsters are all alerted and will crowd up at the stairs. Then they're fish in a barrel. Some should be flagged as "ambush" to avoid being alerted by gunfire. Or you could make sound-blocking line pairs. I know the map is short on purpose, but the areas themselves could just be larger. With such small spaces, theres not much room for the enemies or you to move, and it limits how many enemies you can even place.

Mind you if it never gets an entry I don't care much, but I think it would be hypocritical to ommit a community project with this much effort behind it from an encyclopediac site because this particular subcommunity has an edgier sense of humor (and not even /pol/.wad edgy for edgy sake, just the word "faggot" and gachi memes done mostly in earnest)

It’s a slippery slope and even still, they were short in HL1 as well. And they still gave you the go-head to shoot anyone in the face in that game. Or you can just ignore them, it was nice.

It's great when you're growing up on it and later coming back to it and getting washed over by the warm feeling of familiarity sure, but if you're someone coming into it completely fresh in this year it's absolutely mind-numbingly boring. They did well.

Way to early for a melee game. I would say we have to go from dark messiah mechanics forward but seeing as 3dr person just fills that niche. I found myself in TES games just going 3d person.

That's a hard call. Monster mods are kinda uncommon nowadays, but I don't want to be taking up a shitload of space on this infographic. I'll leave it up to the dude making it if he wants to add Malefactors as a separate item in the infographic, or just have it as a footnote for Combined_Arms.

Downtime is fine when it's done whenever the player chooses and for however long he chooses, while also engaging and rewarding the player for it. Which is the purpose secrets in oldschool shooters served. You clear an area, dick around looking for secrets for however long you can be bothered, then continue on with the carnage. It's part of a rewarding and engaging gameplay system and therefore aged well.

In contrast HL1 and 2 downtime is all linear, scripted bullshit you are forced through whenever the game feels like it, and it's completely unrewarding because all it is is shitty platforming and setpieces that have simply lost their technical wow factor, without which there's nothing else. No exploration, no reward, nothing. Just jump around on suspended containers, jump around on floating pieces of debree, jump around on floating islands, and your only reward for all this shit is the next segment of actual gameplay which is all you wanted in the first place.

>what is pacing
"Forcing" things isn't necessarily bad. Just because you're "forced" into a calm section after a hectic battle doesn't mean the design is unfounded. One of the reasons open world games suck so much is because they have no sense of pacing and no personality because they basically have no level design and as a result it all blends together.
Also Half-Life is really good at environmental storytelling which shines the most during these downtime sections.

HFFM was driven by community consensus, Anon. Nobody was swinging their dick around here trying to bludgeon people into submission. The gachi stuff organically became a part of the project, with the consent of the people involved. If it was such a big deal to you and the project wasn't gachi in the first place, why didn't you object to it then?

IMO, the opposite is the case
At lower resolutions, the fuzz effect is much more pronounced. Where as higher resolutions in software, the fuzz effect is a lot more subtle, making it easier for them to blend in with the dark environment.
>and in full 3D rendering.
This is true, though, as hardware renderer can't use the original method for the fuzz effect, and has to use an alternative, which tends to remove the resolution-based quirks.
