Started playing DOOM for the first time a few days ago, I'm now in e3m2 on Ultra Violence.
Is it normal that you have fuckall ammo? I've played 3/4 of the first level with the knuckle to arrive at level 2 with like 10 bullets and no shells. Been running around ignoring enemies trying to scrape up some ammo in the vicinity, but it's scarce as fuck.

historically the game developers have turned a blind eye to modified IWAD material provided the PWAD still requires the original IWAD to run.

since Memorial is not a standalone IWAD it falls under said blind eye. of course if you actually asked id about it publically they'd be forced to say it was copyright infringement, so the trick is that nobody (except one overzealous moron from the KDIZD team) ever asks.

(although to be fair Memorial does push its luck a little bit more than most. modified maps are a little more dubious than the standard case of a few modified textures; in particular, except for some special cases, modified IWAD maps are banned from /idgames, although this is more to stop it being flooded with modified copies of E1M1 with fifty billion cyberdemons added)

Shotgun Frenzy is popular, Invasion maps like the Armageddon series are also good for coop, though these two are mostly blasting monsters. Most single player megawads work well for coop too unless they have a trap trip that prevents access to a room. Remember to callvote chagemap map01 in a pinch.

I'd give it a solid 8/10. I thoroughly enjoy it. Though I can understand why some people don't like it. It makes Doom a bit more Duke Nukem-like, it's not quite as fast paced as vanilla doom, which doesn't really bother me. The amount of blood and guts and the variety of ways to kill enemies is, in my opinion, really satisfying.

Two of the games weapons (Assault rifle, and pump action shotgun) feature iron sights, though using iron sights is by no means mandatory to properly aim the weapons, all they do is zoom in a bit, and make the aiming a bit more fine. You're perfectly capable of killing without them just as well as you would with them.

There is weapon reloading, which is something that can be easily disabled, I believe. I don't mind it, so I'm not 100% sure.

And some people said the obscured vision near death, the obscured vision has been drastically toned down in recent builds, and isn't bad at all.

Really though, it's free, give it a try. What is there to lose?

For example, the mapping style of Episode 1 could be categorized in a "tech/toxic waste/malfunctioning" style, next to none hellish textures.

Episode 2 would be tagged with a mapping style more focused on an old, abandoned techbase, with the occasional hellish/bloody structure which pretty much confirms that hellish beings took over that place

Episode 3 is a full-blown satanic madness, marble and bloody meat textures mixed with organic, psychedelic and hellish designs and stuff

Episode 4 is marble everywhere, with some rusty metalish borders and the occasional wooden texture

Been playing Blake Stone lately, since it came with the ROTT2013 preorder. It's pretty neat, but the informants really do their best to get killed and secret hunting can be a bitch, especially without Planet Strike's automap functions. Completed episode 2 yesterday with a 100% mission rating. I even found and 100%'d both secret levels. Probably going to start episode 3 later today. Dunno if I'll be able to stomach all 6 episodes without moving onto Planet Strike until they're all completed, but I'll try.

I would say that it is worth it, but this is obviously a personal opinion. Do you enjoy first person shooters, or sprite based graphics? The fast paced gameplay while running through a complex non-linear level? The adrenalin of pumping bullets into hostile monsters, and the anxiety of not having bullets to pump into hostile monsters? I don't want to claim that everyone here detests storylines in first person shooters, but if you do, you will enjoy Doom. If you find additional enjoyment from playing a game that you know still influences videogames today, it will truly be ecstatic.

This all said, I recommend playing a demo or pirating the game first, and then buying it if you like it. Doom isn't for everyone, and I don't want to dig a pit in your wallet if it wasn't worth it to you.
