There were Red and Blue, but here the screenshot shows a Green... Wikipedia says our Blue was Japan's Green, while Japan's Blue was a special edition that came a little later and had its elements incorporated into the international Red and Blue?? Or something? I never played any of these games and can't easily imagine how this stuff would have seemed to a kid then. It doesn't look like much really, but then again it's a solid concept and the games appear to be more complex than Dragon Warrior, which I loved, so I probably would have loved this. Also I'm not sure I've ever seen a real or fictional animal cuter than Jigglypuff. (Pikachu is kinda ugly though, and I don't know why that guy with the pocketed vest doesn't open his eyes.)

Yes. Red and Green were first in Japan, but later they received an updated version called Blue with new Pokemon sprites, some bugfixes, a revamped final dungeon, and changes to a few Pokemon locations. America basically got two versions of Japanese Blue, but with the Pokemon locations from the original Japanese Red and Green hacked in.

It lead to one really funny moment. In Japanese Red and Green, there's a trainer who will trade a Raichu for Electrode (neither of these Pokemon can evolve). In Japanese Blue, he trades a Graveller for a Kadabra (these Pokemon are special and automatically evolve when they're traded). So in Japanese Blue, after the trade the guy goes "The Kadabra you traded me just evolved!". But since the English version is Blue version with Red/Green's Pokemon locations, it has Red/Green's Raichu and Electrode trade, but he still says "The Raichu you traded me just evolved!" afterward. That lead to a LOT of playground rumors about there being a way to evolve Raichu.

That was exactly my experience. I kept it for a year or two during the N64 years just to see what was going on but all the games looked like garbage since all I was into at the time was RPGs. They forced my hand, with Squaresoft moving to the Playstation.

Something like that. You still had to grab a ladder in midair, but it was much more fair. If you missed, you just landed in water and could try again.
