I need opinions for the Saints WAD.

Should I simply recreate the levels, and let the player run through it as Doom guy, or should I attempt a full on reconstruction?

I know how to do custom weapons, and custom enemy/power up sprites. I just don't know about decals and scripting for the inventory and shit like that at this point.

Hey frens, I got a fun idea for a mod. Probably already been done, but I wouldn't know coz I'm a newfag.
Its a multiplayer, a whole bunch of levels, where each person plays as a classic FPS character. BJ, Doomguy, Quakeguy, Duke, Lo wang, Caleb, Gordon Freeman.
Everyone gets their weapons from each game, and you can only kill the enemies from their game, and only get items from your game. You can pick them up and give them to other players, but you cant use them. This creates a whole thing where you're trying to get a specific teammate over to your location, could be a bit of fun. Thoughts?

>All we need now is the Archvile that is the HR Giger Girl
has it ever been stated that design is the archie?
because i know doom 64 was based off ps1 doom and that port couldn't get the archvile to work
it can make sense if the design is infact the archvile itself because until the 2 headed dog or more cybernetic cyberdemon, i can't see them cook up a whole new complex set of abilities for that female demon creature
i do like to think that doom 3 should have used this design instead of their "just the base archvile but fatter and no mouth tubes" version

>> No.8739154

>>8739141
I guess I'd try to make it less hallway-focused and a bit more linear. I like the idea that they all work as a team, and stay together someway. Maybe swap it for a specialty system- Doomguy gets the shotgun, Lo gets the Katana, BJ gets the machine gun, etc. I can change the enemies/bosses so there's less of them but they're stronger, and have each one vulnerable to a specific gun.

Lots of people don't like those extensive Drake O'Brien style adventures no matter what, so don't labor it too much if some people don't like it.
I'd say to never do backtracking which doesn't feel significant, make sure to add in more monsters and supplies so that it stays interesting, make the player fight through it, maybe even alter the geometry so they can't go the exact way back, activate some crushers, etc.
I'd also say that if a map is really large, make a good chunk of it a single optional secret area, the exploration is part of the fun with maps like these.

Whatever you do though, try to keep progression obvious, and never, NEVER EVER do a Disaster Area. Ever.

Eh, it's only perceived to be as strong as it is because it and the sniper rifle are the only weapons able to headshot, and headshots insta-kill anything without shields. The bullet spread is significant (seemingly greater than any other Halo pistol) and it just kinda plinks off shields. Even unshielded body shots aren't particularly impressive in terms of damage.

Memoirs of magic kicks ass. Completely written in doom engine, you can run this in gzdoom or whatever. The artstyle reminds me of N64 games like Glover, and there’s plenty of Zelda references in the dungeon designs. The author injects certain elements in the art that are best ignored.
Although it’s open world you’re sure not getting past the second dungeon without doing the first, or third without the second, etc. Once you get enough cash to upgrade your strength and weapons it’ll become smooth though. Except before that you need to upgrade speed to even reach the second dungeon.
Speaking of difficulty most of the enemies do not play fair. This is an fps bullet hell. The dungeon traps are grueling as well.
After that is lots of exploring, there’s a ton of content in this game. You might even turn on degreeless mode and just look around the world.

this replay is awesome

it leaves such an impression, a memory on me

ugh it was such a good idea to run it on nightmare. It would be so boring looking for secrets without enemies to spice it up

the more difficult, larger maps are such a playground 2b honest

regular doom tuber playthroughs are on UV or blackmetal (brutal doom added difficulty)

ugh you can just tell when he gets hit it leaves doomguy furious and less willing to make the same mistake that got him hit in the first place. Theres so much emotion in this piece of art (the good emotion: rage)

in simple terms its entertainment being delivered constantly at high speeds. Theres also a constant flow of opportunities of entertainment (respawning enemies)

honestly respawning enemies gives the map so much entertainment value than just the regular UV spawns. UV is okay but only when you play it by yourself. Since spectators arent playing its easy to be bored by slow regular human mental processing and reaction speed

this video is probably as close to as entertaining as watching a bunch of hungry lion killing a bunch of unarmed people in a gladiatorial arena sense

also btw speedruns are fucking boring and the only people who find them rewatchable multiple times entertaining is likeminded autistic speedrunners

I find the gameplay to be pretty shit and the dungeons are fucking obnoxious. There's ambition there and a fuckload of content as you said, which is why it pisses me off so much that the dev's collapsed star density autism had him leave the gameplay in such a sorry state, there's a reason why no one really talks about that game, and it isn't because of the imp running around in assless chaps or the hawkman with the big fucking bulge.

>> No.8740063

>>8740004
I had a feeling it wasn’t play tested probably, the difficulty is beyond “6000 hours in quake” and “dev is bored of how easy it is”. It’s simply artificial, for example the stone golems that can instantly kill you with their AoE rocket punches but take at least 50 hits to kill (by the way we trapped you in an arena with 5 of them good luck). The lack of health pickups greatly punish the player, who already has to conserve resources for the lengthy dungeons, the only respite are the distantly scattered inns or campfires.
The absolute grind of the bosses is immeasurable, you need the summons which you only get after an even more bullshit boss fight. It requires a ton of time investment from the player to defeat just one, and it never stops amping up.
Kudos if you can make it through the entire game. At a certain point your character does become insanely strong, but you’ve pretty much beaten everything except the final boss by then.

Giger's influences are all over pop culture, Doom would be no exception. I always got his vibes from the unused Arch-Vile model made for Doom 64, the original Arch-Vile is partially inspired by the movie Pumpkinhead (Punchatz had it running in the background while doing the sculpting for it), and the monster in that movie has maybe a little bit of Giger in it. Contrary to the silly name, Pumpkinhead is actually a pretty damn good horror movie.

>There were reportedly tumultuous goings-on, involving promiscuity by both partners and frequent use of drugs. On one occasion, Tobler failed to appear at the house and Giger, terrified, started frantically looking for her on highways. Eventually, he received a phone call from Tobler, three days later, who informed him that she had to make a trip of extreme urgency (probably with another boyfriend of hers, as remarked by Giger years later). According to the painter, "as of that moment she did, more or less, what she wanted".[2] Giger, who was although madly in love with her, suffered his own psychological problems and agony over his artwork. Giger later stated that he was cheered simply by the fact that Tobler had found another lover, as that would make her happy and also improve Giger and Tobler's life together. It has been acknowledged, however, that Giger also used to see other women, much as Li Tobler had parallel affairs during those years.

Sounds like two mentally ill people being dysfunctional together. Tragic but not uncommon, I think their difference was that Giger had a stronger will to live, hence why he didn't end himself, and instead lived to old age and tripped down the stairs in his own home.
Truly one of the artists for the ages, we're fortunate to have been blessed by his so very strange existence.

If I could, I'd do that. Though because of the fucked up and hacky method I've had to implement the pickup sprites, making it animated might prove to be tricky.
For context, that sprite there isn't the actual weapon pickup. That's a projectile that's constantly warping on top of the invisible pickup sprite that does the real stuff. This is some gross hack fuckery Yholl helped me come up with to have these items reliably change appearance based on your class.

It's also why my weapons don't respect the weapon stay flag for multiplayer stuff. Zandronum dev seems to be a constant game of doing stupid shit like this.

projectile sprites are animated normally though right? I don't know this hacky fuckery but that shouldn't be too hard

It's mainly due to the a_warp calls involved. So instead of:

Spawn:
TNT1 A 0
TGPU E 1 bright
TNT1 A 0 a_warp (AAPTR_TARGET,0,0,0,0,WARPF_INTERPOLATE|WARPF_NOCHECKPOSITION)
TNT1 A 0 a_checkflag ("SPECIAL","spawn",AAPTR_TARGET)
TGPU E 1 bright
goto death

I'd have to make it really gnarly and do some shit like:

Spawn1:
TNT1 A 0
TGPU E 1 bright
TNT1 A 0 a_warp (AAPTR_TARGET,0,0,0,0,WARPF_INTERPOLATE|WARPF_NOCHECKPOSITION)
TGPU E 1 bright
TNT1 A 0 a_warp (AAPTR_TARGET,0,0,0,0,WARPF_INTERPOLATE|WARPF_NOCHECKPOSITION)
TGPU E 1 bright
TNT1 A 0 a_checkflag ("SPECIAL","spawn2",AAPTR_TARGET)

Spawn2:
TGPU F 1 bright
TNT1 A 0 a_warp (AAPTR_TARGET,0,0,0,0,WARPF_INTERPOLATE|WARPF_NOCHECKPOSITION)
TGPU F 1 bright
TNT1 A 0 a_warp (AAPTR_TARGET,0,0,0,0,WARPF_INTERPOLATE|WARPF_NOCHECKPOSITION)
TNT1 A 0 a_checkflag ("SPECIAL","spawn",AAPTR_TARGET)
TGPU E 1 bright

etc etc. To keep the animation smooth but also to make sure I'm constantly calling the a_warp stuff to keep it on top of the weapon. Though I could maybe use uservar stuff to clean it up a little. Of course with this set up it'd mean the flower could potentially linger for a bit in the world after being picked up, which would look like shit. I could talk with Yholl to figure out a less disgusting method and find a way to keep it on top of the actor itself. But this is ultimately a pain in the ass job that's not worth my time for something so minor. Too much effort and headaches for not a worthwhile payoff. Lord knows I have a lot of other more important shit to handle like brightmaps and some other fairly substantial art stuff that I'm keeping quiet about for now as a surprise.

TL;DR With my current knowledge it'd be a clusterfuck pain in the ass to get working right and I don't think it's worth it, especially when I have much bigger fish to fry for this update.

Does this get better? I'm pretty bored so far.

I like the level design of doom 64 and doom 2 the way ID did. So far this game has boring level design that amounts to go over there, get the key, now backtrack. Rinse repeat.

And id be ok with that if the combat was good. I've been enjoying playing wads like back to saturn with fun gun mods like treasure weapons, metadoom, Doom RL Arsenal, etc...

But also so far this game has extremely boring combat. Shoot basic bugs with basic weapons, plus the occasional dude who's just an imp.

Is this the whole game?

30 was a bit of a mess, key hunting in lava with a sextouple spawn launcher is retarded but once you figure out that there's a single lift tucked in a random corner that leads to both keys it makes more sense. Still kind of a mess, final stage must be a bitch saveless with what a clusterfuck it becomes and all the godforsaken lost souls and elementals drawing your autoaim away from the romero hole

I mean really... is your source code - in which you're presumably just trying to emulate 90s shooters anyway - that precious? Do you really need a deferred rendering engine that can do a bajillion dynamic lights when what you're trying to grift on got by fine with lightmaps?

Unreal is massively optimized, it's just bad developer practices. Unreal is the poster-child for looks great, runs great when in the right hands.
>Why they don't just use the Quake engine for these early-3D throwbacks
The biggest thing holding back people from doing that normally is there is no editor that allows you to see your lighting as it is in-game. Trenchbroom is one of the finest mapping tools ever, and developers for Wrath use it, but imagine making a map rife with complex geometry just like Wrath, but every time you want to see your lighting you HAVE to compile EVERY time. Unity and the rest don't have this problem.

Sure, but iD was able to cope with that perfectly fine in the 90s without such luxuries as fill lights or sunlights. Crack open any id1 map and there's a light entity every couple meters. If they could cope with it on the shit hardware they had back then I have no sympathy for these indie plebs.

It's certainly oldschool, but I find it much easier to work with complex geometry. The fact that I can just plop down prefab spiral staircases, curved ramps, and anything else based around a circle without having to carve out a new, grid-restricted pseudo-circle for every different size area I'm working with makes things leagues easier. Being able to rotate and scale selected vertices around a given point is phenomenal too.
I'll admit I really miss TB's UV editor though. Lining up textures from trim sheets can be a pain without it, but it's still doable.

It's not (completely) due to Unity. It's indie "developers" not having a clue and Unity making it too easy.
They were forced to fix it in the Switch port, it initially ran at 20fps but they achieved 60 in the end. But that was years after it was released, and they didn't backport the improvements to the PC version.
A few days ago I tried an indieshit unity game (kingdom of the dead? or something) and it ran at about 50fps. I used a graphics profiler out of curiosity, the turd was doing over 50K drawcalls (this is well over 10 times more than the most extreme scenes in eternal or cyberpunk). Why? It was drawing projected shadows for over 100 light sources all over the level, none of which was even visible.
Most indie developers should be shot. Thanks for attending my ted talk.

That ended up being the best decision it seems. I can dislike the models and environments as much as I want, but most don’t seem to care and he got the game out when “retro shooter” interest was peaking. Now it has to compare with the new Quake port with new models, way more content, and often at half the price that Dusk asks for.
Seems like you can get some nicely detailed levels if you’re willing to put in the time, too. Gloomwood also looks like a huge improvement, I’m glad he’s taking his time with it even if that gives people more time to digest quality Thief content.

And that's not exclusive to 3d or 3d fps games either
All those fucking stupid indie devs can mess up even a 2d "retro/pixel/whatever the fuck styled" game to slow down to a halt on good computers - imagine that - a game supposed to mimic games on far weaker old hardware can't run on newer computers. Also adding insult is the fact few of them actually understand pixelart and tilework well, I played a point n click "gods will be watching" which is god awful because pixels in some backgrounds and sprites are larger/smaller than pixels in others, and sprites move smoothly next to one another which is a fucking eyesore and mess.
Sorry for off topic, we probably shouldnt talk about dusk or other new games.

Last time I checked, Unity doesn't occlude anything by default, it just does basic frustum culling. Culling has to be set up manually.
I mean, literally just read the fucking manual: https://docs.unity3d.com/Manual/OcclusionCulling.html
More importantly, run your fucking game under a profiler or graphical debugger, so you can catch gross mistakes (e.g. rendering everything twice, or 8000 shadow casting lights being updated every frame).
Fun fact: culling is fully automatic in DooM. It always works (the wonders of 2D). For Quake, it's part of the map compile, you can skip it but fortunately most people don't, except ironically on fuckhuge maps (Ter Shibboleth / Peril) because it takes too long.

I highly advise against the free version of JACK, it has a very serious issue when it comes to saving texture alignments. Instead, use this cracked version dubbed "Cracker Jack" from 2021. It fixes many issues, adds in important features and most special of all, separates itself from Steam.

https://www.mediafire.com/file/iynioy5674y075h/CRACKERJACK.7z/file

I just meant in the sense of games. I was playing a recent mapset and there was a certain chunk of the map that had a very similar layout to the red key area in TNT’s MAP02, and I was wondering why I was thinking about it until I stopped and looked around. 2002ADO also has a map with a section that’s extremely similar to E1M1’s main hangar area, and it threw me off balance when I started realizing what I was going through.

But on your topic of liminal spaces, I find the whole trend funny. I saw someone online try and describe what constitutes a liminal space, and their description was more or less all of the things that make a Doom or Quake map good. Abstract areas meant to vaguely represent something real, and interconnected spaces with little dead ends. There’s this whole section of Garry’s Mod maps meant to be “liminal” and give off an unsettling feeling, but when I was walking through them my only thoughts were “this would be a good DM map if you threw down some weapons and spawnpoints.”

So, um, ... while some of us are one this topic of Samus x Doomguy which my comment sparked... I want to mention the fact that since playing Metroid: Dreadnought this afternoon it put this strange idea in my head of shipping the two of them. Now I'm not usually the type of person for shipping, but for some odd reason the idea of Samus and Doomguy just seems to work for me.

Sorry to go full Coom-brain on you but Doomguy would be an absolute animal with a willing woman. He'd slap her around, push her into positions he wanted her in, and really rough her up, AND SHE WOULD LOVE EVERY SECOND OF IT. I think Samus is one of the few fictional women characters in gaming who could handle Doomguy.

I disagree. I liked the end fight. I think that if anything, as I'm going through the set, I feel like the main weakness I'm noticing throughout many of AD MORTEM's maps is that the mappers pull a lot of their punches. Q2 machinegun's still an ugly little shit.

>Doomguy would be an absolute animal
Not a chance. Doomguy has a gentle heart. Remember the reason why he got his ass shipped to mars to start with was decking his superior officer to protect a random civilian. Don't forget Daisy, bunnies stress out easily so you need to be chill around them for them to be comfortable and happy.

now they just need to add bitterman and make his passive ability "even shittier weapon switching than QC" for that true quake 2 experience

As an HD player, I like when Arachnotrons are used. They're terrifying.
You want to be a real asshole, put hitscanners behind mid textures and bottleneck players into a room where the enemies can see the player first. Because the odds of them getting shot in the head from a jackboot or marine are pretty high.

I like when mappers use chainsaws in their maps, because the chainsaw DOES have a niche in vanilla. But more importantly there's a lot of gameplay mods that do fun stuff with the chainsaw and it sucks missing out on that.

there's one in ancient aliens, though you can technically permakill the arachnotrons by telefragging them

I like Doom 1 & Plutonia a lot too, A.L.T., Epic 2 & most of Eternal's stuff, Perdition's Gate, most stuff put out by Nicolas Monti, Bauhaus, Speed of Doom, Oops All Techbase, Scythe 2 & some of Scythe 1, Eternal Doom, Sunlust & most Ribbiks wads, Plutonia 2, Cydonia, Ozonia, Lost Civilization.
I like a lot of WADs with various styles, the reasons I like TNT is because it has the best IWAD music, has an unique atmosphere and is full of 90's aestethics.
WADs I don't like are stuff like BTSX, Eviternity, Ancient Aliens, Valiant.
They feel cartoonish, overdesigned and most of their music sounds like some Nintendo bullshit, royalty free edition.

I’d prefer to, really. Wasn’t it just farting around in a field before it got piked, and it wasn’t until Thy Flesh Consumed that it was stated to be “lol doomguy’s pet”? So the demons went and grabbed it from wherever, didn’t squish or kill it, had it chill in a field where it didn’t freak out and run away apparently, and then killed it?

I don't understand. Discussing a weapon from a /vr/ game in /vr/ is not allowed? Is there a new rule that you cannot talk about the chainsaw?

Doesn't mean he wouldn't give it to a girl hard if she really wanted it.
