Ages ago I recall playing an arcade 2D fighting game in which one of the characters had an attack where he would grab the enemy with his hair and constrict them with it. The character was some sort of kabuki fighter? I think?

The videogame of lobo for super nintendo. It was never realeased as far i know. And i will be honest: that game does not look so good, but still i loved something of it: i loved how in the prototype you can see during the fight in the portrait of the enemy how he/she gets his/her face more and more beaten as he/she receives damage. Thats is something very rare to see in most fighting videogames(at least during the fight).

Does anyone know what game this is?
I found this arcade game in early 2020 iirc in a mall it looked pretty old but it inspired me to play fighting games. But after that the lockdown happened and couldn't go to play it, I don't remember much about the game. When the lockdowns were lifted I went to play it again but it disappeared from that place.
I went on google to search from old images taken at that place by other people and this is the only image I found of the game.

Daraku Tenshi/The Fallen Angels by Psikyo. Unfortunately Psikyo was purchased by SNK before the game's completion but an incomplete build does exist and is playable enough. Gameplay wise it's nothing special, being a beta it's very rough and mostly just the basic groundwork, but aesthetically it looks fantastic with its grimey, dark aesthetic. It was actually picked up recently to see a full release but covid halted development, this game is just about cursed.

The music is terrible and really forgettable, the characters moves are limited and the sfx just seems...off...somehow. like you would expect hagger to have a big WACK sound for a double hammer fist attack but instead it just sounds like a quiet thud.

The stages are garbage and in most cases just flat backgrounds but nothing memorable like what tekken 2 had.

It's really an awful game. Expensive shite that's only expensive because it was limited upon release and thanks to retarded collectors it costs a small fortune.

in 2022, Mortal Kombat is the far bigger brand, thanks to the WB Interactive funding NetherRealm Studios. The last Tekken game was 2015, which wasn't that long ago. How many people have actually played Fighters MegaMix for the Sega Saturn? The game was never ported anywhere else. Not even to PC. Actually owned a Sega Saturn back in the day, I could never find the game to purchase anywhere at retail. Despite the Virtua Fighter franchise being well known, and the Fighting Vipers franchise being less-than well known. The only way to play Fighters Megamix is on a real Saturn, or through emulation. I would say Fighters Megamix is actually pretty obscure outside of some circles.

Importing JP stuff into Europe in the mid 90s was wild. Not only were most import dealers cutthroats...getting some proper info on the games themselves wasn't easy. If you were lucky then your preferred game magazine had the occasional import review.
Beyond that you were in for either disappointment or surprises.

Fighters Megamix came out in late 1996, and didn't exactly get the biggest release. Sega didn't put much advertising behind it. The game was never ported to the Sega ST-V hardware. It was a Saturn exclusive, outside of that weird Game.COM port. It's a game that I pirated for the Saturn, because I couldn't find a copy. Though I guess I could have always checked ebay. I love Figghters Megamix though. Pretty sure the devs were quoted as saying tat Fighters MegaMix was built from the Fighting Viper Saturn game engine. Also, the VF2 cast has a large part of their VF3 movesets, giving you an early preview for VF3. Plus they have the VF3 style 3D gameplay, with the dodge button. Also, Janet from Virtua Cop has Aoi's moveset, and the game has the unlockable Shiba, a character that was cut from VF1. It's an interesting mash-up of everything AM2.

>I never looked THAT deep into Megamix. I remember it as fun, definitely miles above the other Saturn beam em up I imported that month: FIST.

It's not the most well balanced fighter, and was never really meant to be. It is mainly a mash up of Virtua Fighter (in this case VF2.5) vs Fighting Vipers. Though the gameplay is geared more towards the Fighting Vipers style. Virtua Fighter characters do not have breakable armour, but do have armour breaking moves. The armour and walls can be shut off. The game has a lot of unlockable 'meme' fighters. Like the Daytona USA Hornet car, Bean and Bark from Sonic the Fighters, and Rent-A-Hero. This one is still a Saturn exclusive beyond the Game.Com version.

The Unholy War for PS1 was an underrated gem. Same devs that did Star Control. You like Star Control don't you /vr/? It has similar playstyle to SC1 but with creatures instead of ships.
>Rock-paper-scissors like strategy in choosing your fighters
>Chess map strategy mode or just basic pvp
>Hints at a very cool story, "Magic vs Technology" theme, every character race has some depth to it.
>The strategy mode is simple but really good with various maps and a number of ways to create advantages/disadvantages before the 1v1 combat starts

The downside is this game can only be truly enjoyed if you have an equally skilled buddy to play against. The AI is unsurprisingly crap.

I fuckin love this game but like a lot of obscure 1v1 fighters, it's just impossible to find a worthy opponent.

The Saturn port of DOA1 looks just as good as Virtua Fighter 2 on the Saturn. In some ways, better. The Saturn DOA was also ported to the original Xbox as Dead or Alive 1 Ultimate. This is the Saturn game ported to the Xbos with the arcade models replacing the Saturn models. The one thing that this version is missing from the Model 2 arcade game are the 3D backgrounds.

Oh sure. A proper arcade port would be nice. Just pointing out that even the Saturn port of DOA1 was ported to other hardware, like the Xbox. Though, I remember Tomonobu Itagaki saying somewhere, that he considers the Saturn version to be the definitive DOA1. Which is why Team Ninja apparently ported it to the OG Xbox.

I have never actually played the arcade DOA1. I have put a little time into the Saturn game, through emulation. So, I have no idea if the Saturn game has any tweaked or rebalanced gameplay (like a Virtua Fighter 2.1). As a Saturn port, it is comparable to Virtua Fighter 2. It runs in 708x480i @60fps (like VF2), uses the same 3D playing field trick for the arena's like VF2. I generally think the models look better in DOA. But clearly doesn't come close to the Model 2 game visually, Though, it looks like a faithful arcade port. The Xbox port seems like the same game, with the higher poly arcade models, better textures, and is higher resolution. It's the Saturn version with arcade assets,it seems. I have never played the PS1 version either, so I can't compare that one. But, I wouldn't mind an arcade port that is comparable to the Virtua Fighter 2 XBLA (360) arcade port.

doa 1 xbox is just the saturn version in higher resolution, but still uses the saturn models.
saturn version is very barebones but the only cuts were character polys and 3d stages, so its very faithful as a port.

ps1 version had new models made from scratch, and they end up looking worse than saturn.
literally everything in ps1 was changed, even the stages and music however the sheer amount of extras make it the best version unless you want an arcade accurate experience.

The saturn port is as faithful as you can really expect it to be. I've actually only managed to see a cab in the wild once so I can't actually say if there were too many balance fixes myself either. I guess it does use the Saturn models, going by your image. I oddly thought it was like the PC port of Virtua Fighter 2. VF2 was released for Windows 95 in 1997. I had a copy of it, myself. It was a straight port of the Saturn game, but also features D3D acceleration and the option to use the arcade Model 2 game models instead of the Saturn models.

>>8708680
>As another anon pointed out the biggest and most immediate and perhaps only really major thing missing is the 3D backgrounds but it sure would be nice to get a perfect edition that brought them back.

I love the look of the Model 2 arcade game. Model 2 board games have a distinctive look to them, in general. The board renders quads instead of polygons. Kind of like the Saturn. Model 2 games have a chunky-cubeiish look to them, DOA1 uses the same variant of the Model 2 board that Virtua Fighter 2 uses. The game overall is visually comparable to VF2. I never really got into DOA1. I spent more time with DOA2 on the Dreamcast.

DOA1 never quite got the push 2 did globally. I think the only version that even came out in the west was the PS1 version, which isn't a bad port really, and from all I could find the game was generally received well from those that played it. I liked it a lot myself though I was an early import fag so I got to play a lot of Japanese fighting games on my saturn. But even as a big fan of 1 I don't think many would argue that it was really 2 that pushed the series into the spot light.

But man I do miss that model 2 vibe.

I have a soft spot for Star Wars: Masters of Teras Kasi.

It is something of a Tekken\Soul Blade clone with what are essentially EX moves (in function) from Street Fighter mixed in. Also has a weapon stance mechanic years before Mortal Kombat would implement something similar.

If I knew how to make webms I'd show off the jank this game has. Let's say it's stuff like combos that cannot possibly complete outside of very fringe circumstances, standing strings that are unsafe against guarding /on hit/, and lots of bizarre attention to detail in some places.

Since I don't, you just have to settle with wondering who will win this trade of uppercuts as taken from the game's native rendering resolution.

Why anyone would purposely make a fighting game for the SNES of all systems is beyond me. I can understand old school SNES nostalgia, I can understand old school FIGHTIN nostalgia. Even if you were nostalgic for the fighting games snes had anyone who played them enough to want to make one knows that's just asking for trouble.

VS from THQ was actually a reskin of Fighter's Impact from Taito. It was dressed up to be all hip and urban because the 90s was weird like that. I feel like they might have been trying to horn in on Rival School's racket myself but it's nowhere near as good. I hear it caused a bit of a controversy because one of the characters is a pimp. But on the whole the game didn't leave much of an impact.

I compiled a bunch of clips I recorded from experimentation and uploaded them here because I suck at webm encoding right now: https://files.catbox moe/0f4329.mp4

You've got self-dropping combos, weird juggle mechanics, strings that are unsafe on hit, weird ringout detection in some cases... The game also doesn't know what a combo is, and only fakes it in Practice mode by counting the number of hits within a specific amount of time, no matter what those hits are.

I am also convinced that there is an attack cancel tech that can be triggered by randomly mashing. I think it'd be fun if some serious FGC type labbed in this game just to see how bizarre the game gets.

Advanced V.G.2 is legit.

If you played the first one, which was very mediocre gameplaywise and thought the sequel would be more of the same, give this a shot. It's improved massively, feels like a fusion between Street Fighter and King of Fighters. Broken as fuck, most character can do massive combos but it's fun as hell (except for that green haired bitch final boss, fuck her).
