This makes me sad. Miyamoto's big dreams must have sounded so promising. I don't know how they could have made this customizing-your-games concept actually work in an interesting way, since user-created content tends to be garbage. But it could have been a cool novelty at least... and, like, flying your SimCopter in your SimCity could be fun I guess. Oh well, I guess they finally got some version of it going with... what, Super Mario Maker? Maybe there was something earlier than that, I dunno.

People had been making custom Doom WADs for a few years at this point, I think. But from Nintendo Power's perspective, Nintendo is inventing the world's first writeable disk, I guess. For this magazine, PC games exist in the same alternate universe of unimportant things where Star Fox 2 and Virtual Boy now live, alongside whatever Japanese stuff they haven't gotten around to mentioning, such as the Famicom Disk System.

Nintendo Power endorsing the idea that all games should have a plot, just one page after honoring Alexey Pajitnov and Tetris. I guess it doesn't hurt or anything though, in that kind of game... Tetris Attack and Yoshi's Cookie don't really have good stories, but it's kinda nice to see characters trying to accomplish something instead of just a lot of moving squares.

Maybe a writer pining for Epic Center wrote that response.

seeing those kids walk to school playing Pokémon takes me back. I never let go of the Game Boy, my father used to scold me for playing at the dinner table. The principal at my school confiscated my phat GB and my mother had to get it back. Few days later I brought the console back, in hiding, and soon after there were half a dozen GBs in the schoolyard (I like to think I started the trend and made the principal give up)

The new Pokemon art was already in the Japanese Blue version. GameFreak just used that for the US releases.
