Why is buying retro games so cancerous now? I just want to play the fucking game fuck off with the collector bullshit. I'm going to go full emulation mode soon I swear to fuck.

I am 34 and haven't played much retro video games the last 10 years or so. I work a lot and have just been playing CS, WoW, TF2 and various newish video games the past decade or so. I'm trying to go back and play some 4th and 5th gen games on original hardware and it just feels like I am buying artifical collectors items rather than video games.

AVGN ruined a lot, everyone wanted to be a Jr. version of him by hoarding junk and displaying it on their walls. Karens read articles like 15 NINTENDO GAMES EVERYONE GREW UP WITH THAT ARE WORTH A FORTUNE TODAY! leading to "I know what I have" listings flooding resale sites. Everything used to be chill as fuck when people just bought what they wanted to play and only fucknuts went in with the "I wanna collect" mentality. Then Tubers got involved and montized the market and made "retro gaming" trendy. This spawned even more twats that wanted to cash in on the hobby that started the hidden gem/rare game bandwagon. All while in the background online self listing sites became the norm which destroyed garage sells, flea markets, pawn shops, and thrift stores.

Then the COVID shit happened and made things even worse.

I've been emulating since the late 90's. Literally no shame in it at all. I even sold some old games I had to collectors on eBay 10 years go. Its so stupid.

I'll give you the hot tip; buy a CRT TV, buy oldish computer parts with an apu and motherboard that supports component converters, buy a128gig ssd + 1tb HDD, 1 or a few replica OE similar controllers (8bitdo prefferavly wired), and install retroarch and download full ROM torrents for all systems you want. Part of what made retro games better back before they were considered retro games was Gamestop and EB games. They were a store you could easily trade games to for cash/instore credit. They got a huge amount of stock which at the time had very little demand outside of big titles. They also priced their games for older systems aggressively and bought them for little which lead to less competition. People that wanted more also would make craigslist listing for an amount somewhere between the buy sell price of gamestop.

It was a win win for everyone but then Gamestop eventually needed more space for modern games so they sold their stock of retro games which in turn made them harder to find (supposedly some stores broke older games they couldn't sell), then you mix in all the Youtubers and collectors and you get the market we have now. at least the gameboy modding scene allows people to fix up and improve scratched as fuck or corroded old gameboys and gives them new life to actually be used and played with. additionally, since most of the mods are inherently new and in production, the only thing that's needed is a donor console, and it often doesn't matter what kind of condition it's in, since the point of the process is to refurbish and fix it and improve it, you'd be replacing damaged screens, or scratched shells anyways. and most importantly, for the most part, gameboys are still relatively affordable enough right now. But yeah, $50 for a scratched GBA SP still sucks ass, but a lot better than a single fucking $200 video game you can download an ISO/ROM of from the internet.

Also Mike was never good at vidya, which is why he fired Bootsy out of jealousy.
But, I'll give Mike the benefit of at the very very least not lying about owning rare japanese systems and games as a kid, like many other e-celebs do (happy console gamer, etc). Mike did lie about his mom getting him a copy of SMB3 back in 1988, and not the japanese copy, but a US copy his mom supposedly found in japan (lmao). I gotta sell some games soon and I've been doing some research. I think the reason why the market sucks so bad is actually because shipping is expensive and rent is expensive. Selling a game on ebay for $20 turns into $9 shipping and ebay keeping $4, or something like that. Go to sell it at a local game store and they'll offer $6.
For example, I want to get rid of Banjo Kazooie. It's a $30 game normally and mine is in great condition. I'll be lucky if I can take home $20. Game store will offer $14.

FOMO is a cancer, and is getting worse. But I think a big problem with it is that it speeds everything up. It leads to feelings that you must be constantly connected, updated, seeing every little development.
I remember when I first started going online many moons ago I'd probably only spend multiple days offline, and then go online again and not feel as if I missed anything because there was less of a "now now NOW!" atmosphere on forums and BBSs. If you didn't reply for a few days it wasn't like this was a bad thing, and then you had BBSs were you could log on, download the latest posts, and read and reply offline then when you were next on post your replies and get the latest posts again.

I do wonder if something like that should (or even could) come back.

Yeah, not related to the retro market, but I think it all feeds in to each other.

FPGAs were discussed before; they can replicate the original chip but you have to understand how it works at the circuit level which requires decapping and studying it, else you just have glorified emulation. Because some people (not putting the parenthetical emphasis to avoid angering the janny) saw an opportunity to milk money out of a hobby that was primarily inhabited by hobbyists of average (to below average) means. It really fucking sucks. Game buying used to be fun, and outside of bulk sellers, you felt like you were dealing with passionate people with similar interests. Now whenever I buy or sell something, I assume it is going to or coming from some investor.

There has to be a ceiling. We saw the Nintendo PlayStation prototype sell for $300,000 at auction, way less than the several million predicted. I'm not going to be that guy and say that we're at the ceiling but a CIB Earthbound is now at $2000. There's a point where it just has to stop before everyone not actually real life rich is totally priced out of the market. After which it would have to come back down because there are just too many copies of these games in existence. Earthbound isn't that rare.

Want to know why? I'll tell you why. I work at a game shop down south - because of collectors fucking everything up, games that should only be worth 1/8th of their value have gone up to stupid amounts. WATA is particularly egregious for this. Here's an example.

2017: We had Pokemon FireRed for sale for round about $25, $35 if it had the box. We paid about $10 for it lose or about $15-20 depending on the condition of the box. Either way, we still profit.

Fast-forward to today, where Pokemon FireRed is about $80-90 depending on the market and about another $30-40 if you have the box and its in decent condition. We had to drop at least twice/thrice what we'd normally pay for it. I hate selling games like these, they're overpriced and often just sit there because they're priced competitively. Why not lower our prices? Because people won't sell them to us if they know they can sell it for higher elsewhere.

The market, WATA in particular, is actively fucking over the 2nd hand market and if things don't change or stablize soon, this will be the norm for a long, long time.

See you faggots, this is what happens when you dont gatekeep your hobby. Shit wouldnt have ever been this retarded if everyone stayed on niche retro gamer oriented hives instead of going on some open video platform and gushing about stuff to norms who never had any interest in this stuff, but caught the "trendy, nerdy hype" bug when they say some maw gaping lardo spewing on about old games. You would have had the occasional wave of nostalgia seekers and those actually interested in playing retro games would have naturally found their way into the hobby and groups. I cant think of any of the meme price western games that cost similarly in Japan. Pretty much 90% of the stuff that is "in demand" is either reasonable or dirt cheap they cant get rid of fast enough. If you learn even the simplest of the runes, that opens up pretty much the entire chunk of the japanese 8-bit library. And then there is stuff where its like, do you REALLY care if you cant read the text in a fucking Mega Man game? Plus censoring shit, like why pay Zuckerberg prices for US Final Fight Guy when you cant even beat up women in it? And no, im not going to feel bad about "depleting stock for some poor japanese guy", not when they have enough stock just sitting around for decades not being played by anyone and being sold for peanuts. Just dont be a scummy jewseller trying to flip Mario 3 Famicom for 80 bucks.

I blame ebay, amazon, and the internet and idiots in general. 20+ years ago people sold old games for reasonable prices because the market was smaller. You weren't likely to find a buyer who was going to pay full price for a used game, let alone 2-20+ times the value. However, with the advent of the online market place, there is always some moron with too much money and not enough common sense, who is willing to spend $2000+ on what was a $50 product when it was brand new. It's actually laughable at how collecting and rarity works. You get someone who is greedy and some lacking common sense, match them up and you get over inflated prices.

You stupid faggots realize that Europe isn't just the UK, right? The market varied a lot, Nintendo was really big in the Scandinavian countries, and in Eastern Europe, particularly Russia, the market was chock full of ZX Spectrum shitboxes and Famiclones (and associated bootleg games), then transitioning away from home consoles and shitbox computers altogether and instead focusing strongly on PC.

Taking a look at some rough statistics from here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_game_consoles_by_region#Europe
We can extrapolate a few things, not strongly accurate or specific things, but numbers which confidently point towards the fact that Nintendo were plenty big around Europe, doing better than Sega in some countries, but doing worse in others.
Game Boy sold 2 Million units in France, but Game Gear sold absolutely fuckall, SNES and Mega Drive having very roughly comparable numbers, NES and SNES sold about twice as much as Master System and Mega Drive in Germany, in Spain none of these break a million, Sega edging out Nintendo slightly (Playstation was much more popular).

Thinking Sega was some sort of underdog which was invisible in Europe is an absolutely retarded opinion, clearly they were not, but thinking that Europeans didn't care about Nintendo at all and that Europeans who had Nintendo games are engaging in some sort of "historical revisionism" is equally lobotomized.
Commodore shouldn't go unmentioned, but their machines weren't blotting out the sun for Sega or Nintendo either.

>> No.8755096

Also, Sega weren't even 'underdogs' in the US, yeah the Master System wasn't that hot, and the Game Gear wasn't either, but the Genesis did EXTREMELY well and competed VERY hard with the SNES.
I wouldn't even say they were underdogs with the Saturn, because going from excellence to fucking up isn't being an underdog, and even Nintendo was making dubious decisions which left the market wide open for Sony.

Emulators are not always perfect and there are some corner cases here and there, sometimes. Some consoles, such as the N64, are still hard to emulate because their hardware is significantly different from PCs.

However, the situation is improving: for gen 4 and older, we now have proven cycle-accurate emulators that pass even the most demanding of compatibility tests, and weird hardware is starting to become feasible to just emulate purely in software.

This is true. There is literally no difference, not even in theory, from using the original cartridges, since ROMs are bit-by-bit identical, regardless of where they stored.

You get to save time, space and money on the original cartridges and at the same time enjoy all the small quirks of the very original hardware. Emulation has its advantages, but also its downsides: not everyone has a powerful enough PC to run an accurate emulator, you may not have access to the original controller and the experience is going to be significantly different if the game originally relied on some specific hardware feature of the console itself (think about the DS's touchscreen). A flashcart is a one time investment that avoids all these problems.
