the gameplay is nearly exactly the same. some maps are cut up into chunks. there are new higher poly character models and altered geometry. new and higher quality textures are used as well.
this is the first version of the game i ever owned. gaming mags and G4TV got me excited as fuck for invisible war, so after i bought and beat that, i found deus ex the conspiracy at walmart for 20 bucks around 2003 or so. i also played half life on ps2 before PC.
some elements of the ps2 version are "better", but the worst part of the PS2 version is the altered lighting. everything is far more lit up than the PC version and there is less fog, so it loses atmosphere.
picrel is a nice cherry picked image showing some of the superior PS2 creative choices.

agreed, but the darkness really adds to the experience. i am assuming the ps2 version is brighter to account for a 480i image on a consumer tube, or it's a problem with unreal engine 1 on PS2.

worth noting the ps2 screenshots are 640x480 progressive running on PCSX2, the PC screenshots is the game running with the DX10 renderer with AA enabled.

and actually finally, i'd like to add that the game plays amazing with a controller on PS2 and the UI is inutitive which was a huge accomplishment for a pc port back then.

anyone who shits on the conspiracy never played it.

i think it would be an interesting project to port the PS2 version into the PC version, at least it's best elements.

This was actually pretty good though. The only downside to the port is that magic is practically-speaking impossible to use because of the low screen resolution severely limiting the range of spells, and the fact that you cannot specifically select targets, you have to sort through all the enemies based on their proximity to the player. So if you're fighting some imps next to you and there's something bigger and badder that you'd rather use your spell on, you're basically SOL because you have to press R2, hit the dpad to select the spell you want, press triangle, then hit R1 until the target cursor selects the enemy, then cast the spell. Meanwhile you're been hit 15 times by the imps and are probably about to die.

This is a PS2 game ported to PSP so it counts. It's the fucking hardest in its entire series and one of the hardest games From Software has ever made. The levels are ported accurately, as in, you get no extra leniency for playing this even harder way, the only form of help is that AC3 and Silent Line can forward their saves to it (unlike in PS2 where only Nexus could IIRC). Even mapping all functions of the game to controls is an ordeal.

I played it when I visited Japan back in 08. It's a goofy port. I played through a sorta-streamlined Ravenholm except you don't have the Gravity gun yet the level wasn't redesigned around it being missing, so like you have the entire introductory portion where you're supposed to be getting used to it disarming all the zombie traps or using sawblades to kill shit are no longer doable. Like there's one trap that you just have to eat because you can't disarm it and it's in a doorway. Still neat just for the novel control scheme

I had Star Craft on N64, it wasn't as bad as you think. You needed an expansion pack to play split screen two player and also for Brood War. The only thing it had going for it was you could select more units. You could select 18 units at once as opposed to 12. Basically it was just to play the campaign. There were a surprising number of U.S. PC games that got Japan-exclusive ports to consoles (usually Saturn or PS1), not just Phantasmagoria. There were ports of The Neverhood, Return to Zork, Dark Seed 1 & 2, Quarantine, Beavis & Butthead in Virtual Stupidity. There were even completely unique remakes/ports of the original Zork and Ultima Underworld made from the ground up.

I've heard speculation that it was because PC gaming wasn't much of a thing in Japan at the time, so they pumped out these ports of Western games to the more popular consoles in Japan instead.

not retro, but when else am I going to get to talk about this weird fucking thing?

this was ported by the same guys who made the obscure games (hydravision entertainment), ended up coming out earlier (or at least, was definitely finished much earlier) than the next-gen version and it's really fucking weird with what seems to be an early draft of the plot instead of the final one, mechanics that are broken as fuck, similar but also somewhat different than the next-gen ones and that idk how they got working on a ps2 with such a newbie team

I just don't understand it. You should play it, if you manage to beat it without killing yourself first you'll be left looking like an idiot without any idea what the fuck happened in the ending, or really, through the whole game

also there's a reference to obscure in the game, try finding it

>downgraded 8-bit audio
>slightly upgraded graphics (but with a much smaller screen)
>janky Mode-7 graphics
>even more slowdown than the GBA version
>somehow managed to faithfully port Final Fantasy IV when Final Fantasy III didn't end up on the WonderSwan Color

Do even half of those work on modern PC without broken shit like dxwind? All I know of is the Sonic R mod.

Worked well for the DS. Then they made a Android/iOS version a few years later with micro credits and it all went to shite. Money's money, I guess.

Yukikaze, a Japanese Xbox exclusive that's pretty much an Ace Combat clone licensed from an anime, isn't actually Xbox exclusive. It had a PC port

That's a unique game and not a port of anything. Pic related is a port however and even uses the same engine as GTA Advance, I hear it's supposed to be really shitty and almost impossible to complete.

that pc port is impossible to find though

Also the closest port aesthetic-wise to the PC version, I'm actually shocked how on point it is compared to the jank Urbz 2 reskin that the other console ports got. But apparently Maxis codeveloped or were at least involved with the PSP version, so that makes sense.

The SNES FF4 uses mode 7 to have a slight tilt to the world map when in an airship.
Wonderswan FF4 warps the bottom of the screen.
