Rare was peak gaming up until thet left for Microsoft. That being said, I think Conkers Bad Fur Day is one of their worst games. People only remember it fondly for the experience it offered. Most segments in the game feel like a chore to get through.

Hmm? Rare was still amazing during the N64. They fell off in the 2000s, most people agree.

I'm blinded by nostalgia since it was the first game I ever played, but it really is wonderful. Got it on right now, found my original cart in my granny's basement last summer and have been playing a lot. I'm not usually into speedrunning but I really like doing the extendo rolls, exploiting developer shortcuts, and using glitches in this game. I remember being 4 years old on this screen, and thinking the little dots on the path might be levels too so I kept tapping A to try and land on one as I walked between the first and second stages. Turns out there is a warp right in the bend, and got taken to a later level I hadn't seen before. It kind of freaked me out. Turns out that's a strat used in some runs today. I love that my dumb child brain brute forcing button presses found that out

As far as I know, all the big talents left (don't know why), this is what kills most studios
And then if you consider the big pubs and how they keep buying all the studios, they basically don't let any talents actually take over
So all we're left now is a hollow as western industry

banjo kazooie is the genre leader for sandbox collectathon platformers. this is mostly due to the genre's collapse post 2005, but there was a lot of competition.

>>8724146
Well, Greg Mayles who was pretty much the main guy behind DKC and Banjo is still at the company to this day. The Goldeneye and Perfect Dark side of the company left to form Free Radical, and Chris Seavor (Conker) stuck with the company for ten years after the Microsoft acquisition.
I think the main thing really is they benefited from having Nintendo there to beat them with a stick, and force them to produce games of a certain quality, while Microsoft were more content to let them produce whatever.

>Doom has 2D Mario and Zelda DNA

I can't tell if you're trolling, or you're legitimately fucking brain damaged. Not only does that make zero sense, but if we're going back that far, Akalabeth had more influence on Doom than either of those games since Akalabeth had a first-person dungeon-delving perspective and was influenced by Dungeons and Dragons, which Doom was as well. Secondly, hidden rooms and secret areas were a concept originally from Dungeons and Dragons, being the first "game" ever to include the concept of not only exploring dungeons, but also hidden areas inside dungeons.

So in essence, based on your logic, all Japanese video games currently have Western design influences and philosophy behind them.

not even slightly close. Japan's streak only ended with the 7th gen, which coincidently marked the death of video games. And even then, the shining beacon of that gen managed to be the souls series, made by a japanese company.
