Spoiler: the joysticks are mounted at the wrong height. They've clearly been mounted in 3/4" MDF or plywood when they are meant to be mounted in a metal control panel no thicker than 1/4". This ruins the playability of a cabinet which while hideous could otherwise still have served for playing some good games.

They weren't needed for low end hardware, but higher end hardware used them back in the day because it made sense. When your CPU is only 30W but it can clock 50% higher if you keep the temperature under 50C, it makes sense to use a peltier instead of a huge ass heatsink. They were normal to see, specially in higher end hardware configurations. Maybe if you only had a few computers turning the 90's and early 2000's, you never ran across them, can't blame you.
I don't understand how "they were in places they made sense" is a hard concept to understand. They don't make sense these days anymore though, that's been the whole point since my first post.

Personally I've had several higher end concumer PCs and workstations that used them, not to mention Apple used them in several PPC based Macs from factory too. Might be a surprise these days but then it was normal, since it made sense.
Hope you learned something new, enjoy anon.

Had a friend who smashed his ps2 controller in a fit of rage

The casing was all that was damaged, all internals worked fine, he literally reassembled it all like an archaeologist trying to recompose some ancient pottery

It fucking worked, it was all held together with transparent tape, it even worked better than mine

On the other hand i had a friend who'd spit on joysticks when he got mad cuz he thought it'd make the joysticks work better (like lube or something)

Also had a friend with an extremly overheating GBA SP (he'd play it for hours)

The battery was swoling, instead of changing it, he opened the case, got tape, and now he battery is connected with wires and tape and he called this a "GBA with an air vent to cool off" (he thought the problem was just temperature)

The only other thing i recall is a friend who had to pirate the PS2 because he cut parts of the cd loader (this was a fat ps2) to "prevent the discs from being stuck"

Obviously he fucked the cd loader, so using the ps2 mc boot (or whatever it was called) to just load in games was his "solution"

Classic ben heckendorn. I had something very similar to this that didn’t work back in the day, bought it off some random guy on Ben heck’s forum in like 2006. Said it was almost working. It showed up weeks late (he was “finishing it”) with no screen, it was all fucked up and didn’t work, didn’t have a battery or anything. He used a frankensteined n64 shell with buttons plastered/wired into the system, and you held it as a controller.

Took it to a gaming convention that Ben heckendorn was at, he had a crowd of the cringiest nerds in the entire place following him taking notes and worshipping him. I pawned it off on them for like $30. I had brought some normie friends and one of them whipped out a camera and started filming the transaction talking shit, it was pretty embarrassing but kind of funny looking back.

I remember after meeting Ben heck though I thought he was a douche nozzle, that was the day I learned what the term neckbeard meant. Me and several friends joked about that guy and those portable consoles for the rest of highschool and on the rare occasion I’ll hear somebody from back then crack a joke about ol Ben heck. He lives in Madison, my hometown, I remember wanting to go egg his house when I was younger and never did, wish I would have.

Wonder what he’s up to now, hopefully he got some anger management and found a wife, guy was fucking miserable.

So let me tell you what happened tonight. I was getting a black screen of death.
The reason was the controller port/fan board just broke tonight. I had a spare one and that fixed everything.
If you dont connect the front fan you get a black screen of death. See the new board. I didnt bother putting in a battery because it works without it and it doesn't save the time and date anyway. The noctua fan is kind of worthless it barely pushes any air. The two black fans are strong and they aren't loud. I made it so the top lid fits. But i dont think i am even going to use the top lid. Because it makes me think it would cause bad airflow.
