Probably the PSP or PS Vita. I just have a couple of GBAs and a GBC myself since I don't really care to emulate console games on a handheld. I have an EverDrive GB X5 Mini and have really gotten a kick out of the Game Gear support on that thing.

Game Boy, the Sega and Atari ones never lived up to their best potential, and had some flaws to them. The GB has no screen light and features a monochrome screen, but it was also much cheaper, used batteries much slower, and had a much bigger library with a bunch of great games.

Sega was far better at home consoles. The Nomad was fucking cool though.

>Game Boy, the Sega and Atari ones never lived up to their best potential,

The GameGear lived up to its' potential. The handheld was a continuation of Sega's 8bit MasterSystem, with colour enhancements. For a while, the GameGear was actually competing just fine with the GameBoy and almost had a 1:1 library, minus Nintendo. Publishers use to target both handhelds. The GameGear didn't last as long as the GameBoy, but it still had a good run. Plus GameGear can play Master System games too.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGaHab2Jlc8

I feel like the Lynx was a prime example, of never really living up to its potential. The hardware in the Lynx was more advanced than the GameBoy or the GameGear, the Lynx was hybrid 16bit. And it has scaling and rotation effects. But the game library could he been better.

Sega launched that system in 1990 in Japan and 1991 in NA, and were releasing games up to 1996. When the system first hit the west, it had a lot of third party support. Comparable to Nintendo's GameBoy, as multiplatform games were generally targeted for both the GameBoy and the GameGear. But third party support did die down in 1994-1995. But Sega did continue making games. It also got a lot of cropped Master System ports. Nintendo had Pokemon that gave the GameBoy a second life. Also, GameGear was usually in $25.00 to $50.00 price range of the GameBoy, and had many game bundles in NA at least. Game carts were the same price. But the batteries were the hidden cost. As GameBoy lasted longer of 4AA batteries, than the Game Gears 2-5 hours on 6AA's.

Let’s look at each console (and the Gameboy) and see how they compare

Lynx
Pros:
>probably the most impressive console on the list. Games were basically scaled down Amiga releases (developed on the same hardware)
>very impressive scaling and faux 3D effects for the time
>backlit screen
>swappable controls, so you can play left or right handed
>vertical display option
>full color
>solid sound capabilities
Cons:
>absurd design. Model 1 is the size of a boomerang and the model 2 is as fat as a brick. Both impossible to fit in your pocket
>limited library of games (only about 75 or something)
>steep launch price ($180)
>library is a heavily mixed bag. Some games are good and some aren’t at all
>shoddy battery life (4 hours max)

GG
Pros

>full color backlit screen
>very solid library of games, only a handful are alright bad
>basically a portable master system
>games run significantly faster than Game Boy games

Cons:

>questionable size, can barely fit in your pocket
>steep asking price ($150)
>guzzles batteries (6 hours max)

Turboexpress

Pros:
>plays any and all Turbografx games
>backlit lcd screen
>AC adaptor means you can play without batteries
>simple design makes it actually portable
>literally the Turbografx but on the go

Cons:
>small screen makes RPGs or other text heavy games borderline unplayable
>LCDs notorious for failure. A fresh out the box unit could have tons of dead pixels
>demolishes batteries (3 hours max)
>very expensive ($250)

Game Boy
Pros:
>good battery life (11-12 hours max)
>massive library of games
>link cable lets you play multiplayer and share items with friends
>strong support from Nintendo
>fits right in your pocket

Cons:
>not backlit, hard to see in certain lighting conditions
>monochrome screen
>questionable sound quality (some games sounded good, some are tinny and horrible)
>library has some notable shovelware, given the amount of games

Game Boy is most effective but I prefer the Game Gear

Virtua Fighter Mini/ Animation was made by Aspect Co., who went defunct in 2018. They were responsible for Sonic 2, Sonic Chaos, Sonic Tripple Trouble, Tails Adventures and other Sonic 8bit games. They also did Fatal Fury Special for the GameGear.

Fatal Fury Special on the GameGear looks really good for an 8bit fighting game. Virtua Fighter Animation is also quite good. It is based on the Virtua Fighter Anime series.

I want to just say that Sonic Blast for the GG/SMS is game that I was impressed by its technical aspects, But I also thought that the CG models were kind of ugly. The game has large stages with smooth scrolling. The only real upgrade I've noticed from the SMS is the colour palette, which has a selection of 4096 colours as opposed to the Master Systems 64 colour palette. Both systems still output the same amount of colours on screen. But the GameGear has a larger variety. This is why GameGear games cannot be played through MS hardware. Or even Genesis/ Mega Dive for that matter. Like GG-Shinobi II:

I've never played a Lynx either. But i remember seeing previews for Lynx games in some gaming magazines, and they would post up screenshots for games like Battle Wheels, or something, and would talk about being impressed by the scaling 3D graphics. This game is impressive. 3D car combat, but you can also leave your car and potentially steal your opponents car. It also has 8 player link matches. So many Lynx games pushed the multiplayer aspect. But I never really knew anyone with a Lynx.

I'd just use a AC adaptor plugged into the wall. Defeats the purpose of a portable system. But still. it was the only good solution for me for extended play time. The Battery Pack was an older product than the Power Back. You can even tell by the packaging differences. The Power Back was a much better design, even if it did make the Game Gear bigger.

I also remember seeing images in some gaming magazine for this game:

Cyber Virus, and thinking how it looked kind of cool. But this game was never published originally, and then published as an unlicensed after market game.

NGPC. the library isn't huge, but it has the highest % of great games in its library of any console, + the battery life and dpad

Not him, but I also have one. It's about as good as a GBC but with the added annoyance of a watch battery that goes bad every now and then.

Yes. The Atari Lynx did this back in 1989. There are quite a few Lynx games that support vertical resolutions. Gauntlet is another one. there were some Lynx games that gave you the option to play the game in vertical or horizontal resolutions.

Another thing to note is that the Lynx was designed for left or right handed players. The Flip button would allow you to flip the screen upside down and reverse the d-pad. The Lynx was also designed to work in portrait mode at either orientation. D-Pad or 4 action buttons.

I bought the slim but just in boring-ass silver because the other one available had scratches.

Traded my model 2 lynx for a gamegear to a kid on my street. The gamegear had the better games hands down and the TV tuner was awesome for long car rides. I have never once seen or known anyone who had a turbo express.

Found one of these at a good will store years ago for like 3 dollars. As soon as I plugged it in it thick white smoke that smelled like death came pouring out of it before it blew the breaker
