Redpill me on the Turbographics soundchip. Its the only retro console without a distinct voice. Did they just phone it in because they knew CDs were coming?

You too? The composition is a lot more important, particularly when we're talking about a bunch of multitimbral synthesizers. There's a lot of garbage on any of these chips and a lot of excellent work too, it's silly to wholly discount something because of some silicon.

It's a perfectly good chip that does a completely reasonable job. People just don't care much about it because the CD games had fantastic soundtracks that were on par with PS1 titles released years later. It's hard to give much of a shit about Bonk when you could be listening to this.

I don't think it's right to say that PSG chips 'bring nothing to the table.' While it's true that their timbral capabilities aren't nearly as advanced as even the most primitive of FM chips and samplers, their simplicity gives composers a great deal of control over the sound of each channel. Take a listen to the melody here and notice how much phrasing is packed into it; then, think about how someone using an FM synth or a sampler might not feel compelled to make that same decision https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBUzaBHhFVA
To me, it's like comparing a single piano to an entire orchestra. One obviously has more raw stuff available to the user, but that doesn't mean that the existence of a 'better' ensemble invalidates the existence of the other.
