I unironically think the 2A03 has a sweeter and overall more balanced sound than the SID. SID music has a tendency to get squealy.

The famicom one, on top of being an early release, is an extreme example whereas this link is par for the course where ear piercing SID squealing is concerned:

You can actually hear all the channels on the 2A03 for one thing, on the SID they’re muddled and blur together.

Monty On The Run is not that bad at all. I know of some games like the C64 port of Ms. Pac-Man that are kinda abrasive (that one was also early).

NES Lode Runner was kinda shrill as well.

defensible opinion when the DPCM channel is included, but 4-channel NES music is weak as fuck.

The NES PCM channel is nice because it lets you play samples in-game while most other 8-bit systems basically require you to stop everything since the CPU usage is too high. On the Master System for instance you can't do it; samples take nearly 50% CPU time. The downside is the PCM channel is only like 1 bit in width so samples sound like absolute fuzz. This was unfortunate but necessary due to ROM space limitations. Also it has some rather arbitrary limitations on where your samples can be stored (they cannot be bank switched and must be in $8000-$BFFF).

And it messes with controller reads so games that use samples have to poll the controller twice per frame.

the SiD is like any other instrument, its only as good as the artist using it. in the right hands its sublime.
