you set an ultrawide horizontal resolution such as 2560. Old console games run at a resolution that mutliplies up to 2560. Once it's stretched out, it's stretched via a clean integer and thus there are no artifacts. And because all the resolutions mutliply up to 2560 evenly, there is no need to switch resolutions. That's how they work.

after trying many many many solutions and buying many many adapters, i could only output a 480i signal at minimum to my CRT from my RTX-2060 and actually ended up damaging my trinitron trying to get a proper signal.
Retroarch can brute force 240p but the signal has a very good chance at still being interpreted as 480.
it isn't impossible, you just need to keep trying solutions.
i wish the mister would do N64 (i know it's just about ready for PSX/Saturn), then I would actually buy one.

i'm not OP but there is something really really unorganized and un-intuitive about getting CRTemudriver to work, i would need to sit down and give it a whole day of attention and testing.. but bro it's just so fucking gay. so i opted to use CRTPi and its forks instead because i only really wanted to play SNES and Genesis. If I get the urge to do arcade, saturn, and PS1 on my set i will definitely be back to suffer some more. there's a hurdle of daunting tasks that need to be handled and then it usually makes sense after that

I use one of those cheap $4 HDMI to composite adapters. High resolutions will lag a little, so run at 640x480. It only supports 480i which isn't ideal, sure, but is by FAR the easiest way to output the image from a PC to a CRT TV.

The image is slightly cropped, so use an emulator that supports overscan (like DuckStation) or PCSX2 (zoom out feature).

Sure, you can search for some old arcane GPU, mess with drivers, or spend hundreds of dollars on weird scalers and shit, OR spend 4 bucks on something extremely easy to use.

i'm personally going to just get an OLED tv and build a PC to get 4K output res + 240p/480p internal res + quality crt shader as I'm sick and tired of carrying CRT's into my apartment.
OP just really wants 240p on his CRT with some sort of emulation machine, and he could go for the wii but emulation on the wii is 'meh'. It'll do what you want it to 90 percent of the time but audio issues, some bad compatibility, poor 5th gen support and less than stellar input lag makes it drag behind more modern solutions, but it is easy as pie.
IMO wiis make the best gamecubes, that's their primary purpose these days. 100 percent native and increased framerate on games that used to dip.

Mine works fine and 480i being a bad thing is just autism. There's plenty of situations where it's okay. I played a lot of PS1, PS2 and GC games rendered in 4K and downsampled to 480i, 3D games clearly look much better and sharper than the original resolution on consoles.

Even 2D games where 240p shines, I'll play it on the PS1/PS2 or the Wii, but otherwise I'll stick to the $4 converter. Extremely simple and zero lag.

I have an Nvidia GTX770 and set the custom resolutions though the nvidia control panel (CRU didn't work for me). I don't know how they're "supposed" to work really. I just created two custom resolutions of 2560x240@120hz and 2560x480@120hz for my CRT in nvidia control panel, and Retroarch seemed to switch to those resolutions just fine after entering them manually and the games looked great.
It wouldn't switch between the two automatically for 480p consoles though, and Retroarch wouldn't reset the resolution after quitting for whatever reason which was quite annoying.

That's pretty much it for the crt. For the emulation, Retroarch is the best option, it can scale, interger, manual refresh rate, align, etc like no other. I tried several standalone emulators and most of them had issues with scale and some didn't even recognize the second screen.

I set custom resolution for each core and save the config manually. I use Launchbox as the frontend, click the game I want and it starts on the crt with the proper config automatically. Delock DP to VGA adapter, CRU custom 15kHz modes. Cable depends on what you use, VGA to SCART or BNC with H/V sync combined to composite or seperate.
Works on modern GPUs, you can add all the same modes as crtemudriver, autoswitching of modes with RA or MAME also works.

Super resolutions are just multitudes of the horizontal resolution, CRTs don't care about horizontal resolutions, so you can go as high as you want but 2560 should be enough, it's only used for aspect ratio correction.

There's no need to use old drivers and GPUs.

Getting a 240p signal out vs having every available arcade resolution/refresh on the fly are two different experiences. Groovymame/crtemudriver may be a bitch to setup, but getting all of those odd refresh rates to be exact means you get perfect scrolling with no need to add lag. I'd like to know how to output 480i/240p on linux. How to setup xrandr or wayland or whatever. How to setup retroarch and mame. What adapters to use, recommended hardware, how to not fuck up my CRT because it's the only love I have left in my life. I'm also a jobless NEET so I don't want to spend too much.

There's no scaling issues, that's why super resolution exists. Also you're rendering each frame while displaying the last one, there's no added latency from v-sync on things like RA, specially with run ahead where you can get lower latencies than the original system with you use a CRT.

This is the adapter I use. It's a cheap chinese transcoder, doesn't even have a serial number. DVI-HDMI adapter coming from the PC (video card doesn't have a second hdmi output). HDMI goes into the transcoder and component cables goes to the TV. That's it for hardware, no need for display port. Since it's an nvidia video card, I can't use CRTemudriver, but the nvidia control panel did the trick just fine.

It's 240p, no 480i or any of that crap. In fact, I hope I can figure out how to output 480i for Dreamcast games. 240p on Dreamcast looks like shit. I agree that there should be a video tutorial explaining these things, but there are so many transcoders and TV models, it becomes imposible to please everyone. You're gonna have your own issues that I didn't even see.

15khz or 31khz is the horizontal refresh rate.

Say most arcade monitors or TVs (15kHz/CGA) are designed for a horizontal frequency of around 15,750Hz. At 60Hz, this means you often run around 262 total lines. They are less likely to be multisync.

262 lines per frame * 60 frames per second = 15,720 lines per second = 15,720Hz horizontal frequency

A decent vga compatible monitor will be multisync and can run 15khz-50khz or more. That's 320x240 up to 1024x768 or whatever. Past 768 vertical lines the pixel density starts to be too much or the phosphor on the crt isn't good enough. 1280x1024 looks noticeably bad compared to 768 unless you have a very good monitor.

Step 1. Get a Displayport->VGA adapter. I use one from Delocke. Buy a more expensive one if you want higher refresh rates or resolution.
Step 2. (to get the most out of your CRT) Determine the maximum refresh rate at 240p.

Not with that cable but technically yes, you need a cable that does RGB+S, not just RGB, also if you use YPbPr instead of RGBS (or RGBHV) you need to convert RGB to YPbPr.
Like a VGA to RGBS or RGBHV cable, VGA to SCART with joined sync or VGA to BNC with separate sync, like for European TVs or American/European PVMs, BVMs, etc.
You just need to set up 15kHz modes for the VGA output if your DAC supports it, most external ones like DP to VGA do.

The circuit you show would result in a small propagation delay for the video signals but not for the synchronisation. Therefore the active signal comes a tiny bit late in each line.
The datasheet for the LT6550 says it takes 20-35ns to settle, so two in series should add 40-70ns. 480i pixel clock is 13.5MHz, meaning a period of 74ns, so you'd expect to see the picture shifted half a pixel to a pixel right.
Probably not a big deal in this case but if other people are using transcoders with higher delays it could be more noticeable. I will say that I haven't personally noticed such an issue.

The MiSTer VGA to SCART cable should work I think. Haven't tested it myself though but I think it had the right wiring.

Yeah, my GPU has VGA already so I reckon we can just ignore DP to VGA and go straight from VGA to SCART. In the software side I guess I only need to tell xrandr I want a modeline with a horizontal frequency of 15 kHz, irregardless of resolution (240p or 480i). Yeah, buying a ready made cable and adding a YPbPr converter rises the price.
Otherwise if you can just use SCART for RGB and a DP adapter with a self made cable, it can easily be done for 30 bucks.

240p line-doubled to 480p actually looks pretty legit on a CRT monitor. Sure, it's blockier-looking, but at least there's no loss in brightness, and you still get every other advantage of a CRT (colors, contrast, and most of all motion clarity).
