If you want tasteless /vr/, there's a bunch of it, almost all were unlicensed. Porn games come to mind first, we have famous Atari porn (see AVGN), but there's also Japanese stuff that not many people know about.
Shameless porn games on PC-98 were huge in the late 80s and early 90s Japan. They barely had any story and were filled with tons of gratuitous sex, from simple stuff to really hardcore shit. And when I mean "no story", I mean no fucking story, some of them were literal slideshow galleries, not unlike the stuff you'd find under the "Artist CG" tag on sad panda. No censorship either. Then, a few things happened.
First, there was Miyazaki Tsutomu - a necrophiliac cannibal pedophile serial killer who was obsessed with guro hentai, caught in 1989 and dubbed "otaku murderer" by the press. This caused a huge moral panic, and it's the reason why otakus, in general, are still frowned upon by Japanese society. Then, there was a much tamer case in 1991, of some school kid stealing a copy of "Saori: the House of Beautiful Girls", a rather hardcore gallery of kidnapping, drugs, rape, and every kind of incest you can imagine. This became a huge deal once again, and the government decided to do something by establishing the Ethics Organization of Computer Software, a non-profit rating board for PC games (CERO came later, and it's focused on console games). Visual censorship of genitals and stuff also became a thing.
That's also kinda how the date sims became a thing - developers decided that porn galleries were too provocative, so they decided to hide the porn behind tons of text as a precaution.

Rance, obviously. The first game came out in 1989 on every Japanese PC platform (PC-88/98, MSX, Sharp X68000, FM Towns), and was a huge success. In the West, the series became popular with Sengoku Rance from 2006, which is actually the seventh game in the series. There was also Dragon Knight, a very similar game. Rance 1 had an unofficial translation, Dragon Knight had an unofficial machine translation.
Those games weren't all that interesting though, they have more of a historical significance. The real stuff started happening after 1991. In 1992, Dokyuusei came out, and it was fucking huge - the first date sim with a route structure, where you can pick a girl and pursue her. It's a certified classic in Japan. You can't play the original in English though, only the modern remake.
Of course, the biggest one of these retro games was 1994's Tokimeki Memorial. It's impossible to describe how big that game was, even the Western audiences are aware of it. It wasn't lewd, however. Also, it finally got a full English translation only a few days ago.

Pic related is an example of something simpler - 1992's Ikuiku Pakkun by Silky's (Elf's subsidiary). A simple point-and-click undressing game with voiceover (a rarity for the time) and a lot of gorgeous PC-98 artwork.
