I have trouble trying to explain the joy of Super Metroid to friends. I tell them the better you get at it, the more options open up, to the point of being able to play it as an open-world sandbox game. That it's possible to never take the same route through the game twice if you know what to do and if you're creative. That just about anything is possible if you're skilled enough. But they don't seem to really understand why it's such a joy, and I default back into "it's fun and I like it" after I've tried explaining the whys. Maybe it's just something you have to feel for yourself, I don't know, and that would take a lot of time and replays for someone to "get" it, which most won't have time or patience for.

No one from this generation can understand the game. There are 2 ways the game is interesting.

The first is when you play it for the first time and experience being lost at all times. Modern gamers want an HUD that guides them 100% of the time.

The second way to enjoy super metroid is playing it for a high score run (either scoring for time, secrets found, or both). Modern gamers concept of playing for score is almost non-existant. They wont play unless the game fucking has an HUD pop tell them exactly what to do and how to do it.

I think it has a lot to do with how the game is recommended to people. It's justifiably in the top ten of many "Best of" lists, but rarely (if ever) do people know what kind of experience it is supposed to offer. For instance, what if someone were to pick up Portal when all they knew about it was that its a wildly successful FPS?

Yeah, I don't think a game like this would fly in today's gaming. If it was released now, it'd be quite a lot different. I'd imagine there to be cut scenes explaining mechanics, at least 3 cut scenes making it known that items can be hidden in walls, that it's possible to bomb walls and floors, etc, etc..

I started the franchise with Fusion and Zero Mission, thus Super Metroid's shooting and jumping mechanics always feel to clunky for me. A shame, but I cannot help it.

Played it for the first time five years back or so on the VC. Loved it as it was exactly like a 2D Metroid Prime, really didn't think it would be as detailed and have as much as it did.

Eventually got to a point where I broke the game and couldn't continue. I fell down a hole, needed power bombs to continue but didn't have them, couldn't get back up and I was stuck. Never went back to it unfortunately.

Currently playing it for the first time. Growing up I've always neglected it despite loving the gba entries. It's pretty good although a bit clunky at times. I love all the neat tricks you can use for sequence breaking.

Some people want to go to the beach or watch fireworks during the 4th of July, I'll be shutting off my phone and grapple beaming my way across an underground lake in norfair.

I agree. I consider one of the things that made Super Metroid so great to play were its controls. I was pretty disappointed in the GBA games where they dumbed it down, but I guess gamers today thing that if it takes a learned skill to play it must be clunky? Once you get good at wall jumping, you can go all kinds of crazy places.

One of the things I loved about the game were all the secret things Samus could do, such as the dropping (or launching!) lots of bombs at once, the combos with the charge beam and one other beam, and of course the recharge shown during the demo. I don't think I ever used any of these very usefully in the game, but they were fun to do.

You are never lost in Super Metroid, not even if you're a new player. The game constantly guides you on its set path by locking you out of areas with one-way gates, green and yellow doors, Power Bomb blocks, Screw Attack blocks, Grapple Beam blocks, and Speed Booster blocks.

The game is linear as shit unless you deliberately abuse programming errors, because walljumping alone will only get you so far off the beaten path.

"Sequence breaking" was obviously intentional in tons of parts of Super Metroid. That’s half the reason for shinesparks and wall jumping. The game flat out shows you how to infinite bomb jump in the demo movie after you've beaten the game once.

For example, there's one room in Maridia where you have to reach a door that's high up, and there are all these balloon-like enemies and grapple beam blocks at the top which you’re supposed to use the grapple beam on to get up there. However, there's also this conveniently-placed straight tunnel at the bottom that's just long enough for you to charge a shinespark (and in fact, serves no other purpose).

Congratulations on completely ignoring my post.

Spinesharking and wall jumping will only allow you to sequence break so much before you need to abuse glitches. It is a fact that much of Super Metroid is closed off, the existence of all of those different kinds of blocks and doors I mentioned are proof.

If you seriously think that Super Metroid is non-linear without abusing glitches, I have a bridge to sell you. The game is easy and you are never in danger of getting lost.

If you want an open, non-linear game, play the original Metroid. The only required items for getting around in it are the morph ball, morph bombs, and at least 5 missiles. The game does not lock you out of areas with blocks that require any other power-ups. It actually allows you to go wherever you want and will punish you for not thinking. In Super on the other hand, it's practically impossible to die since the enemies aren't threats.

Sequence breaking is for pussies, because there should be no set sequence and therefore nothing to break. I want another Metroid that's as open and provides as much freedom as the original. One that actually punishes me for mistakes.

But getting lost in Super? A game that provides you with a mini-map and has map stations in every section aside from Tourian? Get the fuck out of here.

Mostly when people talk about how non-linear Metroid is, it isn't in the boss fights.

You need key items to progress to them.

The non-linearity being that you aren't on one set path through the world. There are many ways to get to the areas and even secret ones that make it faster to get there.

"Which route should I take this time? Should I get Power Bombs to open up that secret passage from A to B? Or maybe I should just use the Speed Booster to take the other route?"

I don't get how some people can’t understand this. Is it, quite literally, autism?

You missed a ton of the orders. You can get the gravity suit before the varia suit with no glitches at all. Hell, you can get the screw attack before the varia suit without bugs. All you have to do is learn to love the sprint key.

I was about to describe the process and the remembered that the chozo that lowers the acid requires you to get the space jump, which you can't get without bugs unless you have the gravity suit first, although I guess you can get the gravity suit before the varia suit to get the space jump to get the screw attack, which is TECHNICALLY getting it before varia.

Sounds like the place in Norfair after Crocomire.

Your only option is to wall jump upwards, it's really easy once you get the grip of it.

That's one of the places in the game designed to give you your first power bombs. There's a room above to the left with them in it that you can simply run and jump up to if you have the Speed Booster (and you'd really have to go out of your way to get to Crocomire without the Speed Booster).
