which version is the best one?
a) saturn
b) psx
c) switch

It's the original while the PSX version has busted ground textures in a lot of areas.
Switch and PC are afaik based on the PSX version. (and adds some horrible filtering ontop)

Yeah, the HD remaster promised Saturn visuals. And ended up giving us the same old broken PS1 textures. I'm pretty sure the project of porting over the PS1 script to the Saturn version happened in response to that release promising a proper unfucked release of the game and then still just fucking it up anyway.

Saturn version has shadows, use an emulator and upscale it 2x times, use a nice crt-royal filter and you get a damn nice looking game.

The english patched version works great, thanks to an already existing eng font on the japanese saturn version.

they're all the same exact game outside of floor tiles in the first town and whether or not sue's purse changes hands when the sprite flips.
the main problem is that the game is impossible to play if you're over the age of 10.

One understated flaw of the remaster is that they used mirrored sprites for facing left and right (the original game had asymmetrical character designs, so a left facing sprite was different than a right facing sprite. By just mirroring the sprites, you lose the asymmetry)

FMVs are subtitled and all important voiced lines have text to go with them. The only voiced line that doesn't have English text to go with it is a part very early on. However the line is repeated a few seconds later with text to go with it so it's not really a big deal.

Basically the experience text and subtitle wise should be no different from playing the HD Remaster with the Japanese voices enabled.

No, the PS1 script port happened over the course of many years. There's even some more projects like it, but for porting the Lunar translation (which is shit, sometimes on purpose to sell guidebooks, and needs a retranslation, but that's another matter)

That said the official porting team contacted a prominent PS1/Saturn translation romhacker and got accidentally ignored (message went into mail spam) which might explain why they originally said that was the original plan (PS1 port, then adjusted to unfuck it and add the missing effects, animation frames, ground textures, etc from the Saturn version)

To the official porting team's credits, they tried, at least with Grandia 2 which uses the DreamCast superior version instead of the easier PS2 version.

Because Sega originally planned on localizing and publishing it on their own, but it happened in the same period when they were releasing only one third of their games (Shining Force III) so they reportedly cancelled it around 40%.
Sony localized it mainly as a middle finger to Sega, same with Beyond the Beyond (an average 2D RPG that's worse than some of Sony's own 2D RPGs passed over, but it was by Camelot who recently burned bridges with Sega)

... I think it would have been in-character for Sony to localize Tear Ring Saga, just because it's a similar situation with Kaga and Nintendo. Famitsu did a whole media circus of Kaga's departure from Nintendo, how his Card Battle will never get more sequels, and even published Tear Ring Saga on their own (through their mother company enterbrain, with direct support from Sony). Only thing preventing that was Nintendo's lawsuit.

I only played the first two games and I prefer the first one over the second. The sequel just seemed like a cheaper version of the first game hitting the similar notes (impasse dividing world into two, adventuring, communal times with party, etc.). I used to say the first game was a great beginner's game for Japanese, as it was written for prepubescents, but others here convinced me that videogames are a poor method of learning Japanese and it is best to do it proper, but I still maintain that the game can at least offer some morale boosting that progress has been made.

No, it's really just some minor typos here and there. It's mostly minor oops and wrong grammar that was in the original PS1 translation. Stuff like It's vs Its, and things like pic related.

Being such a large game with lots of text the dev has been seeing what's slowly been reported as multiple people play the game. And all that's been reported over a year has been some typos. So it will really just be fixing those at this point and calling it a day. The dev has made it clear the only thing keeping him from doing a full 1.0.0 release is he doesn't want to release 1.0.0 and then hear there's some crazy bug that was never reported.

That's kind of dumb. These games are big with tons of text in them. The Devs simply don't have the time to sit there and play these 40+ hour games multiple times over and over again to try and exercise every single scenario and NPC dialogue to see that everything is working and bug free. That's why it was released for beta testing.

The patch does say that and that it's a Release Candidate at this point. All that's left at this point are a few typos that were already there in the English PS1 version. If you don't care about that then the current patch release may as well be considered final.
