Bomberman I for the NES kinda sucks. The levels are all the same fuck huge size, and the beginning is really slow since you have no power ups: you can't chain bombs, and if you've blown up too many blocks, enemies will never stay put, and to make matters worse there's a time limit. The trick is to trap them against a corner, leaving as many blocks as possible. But the first game just kinda sucks. Bomberman II, Bomberman 90, and Bomberman 93 are much better versions of the old school formula, and then the Super series, 94, and Saturn are even more fun. I actually prefer the GB remake of the first game, included as "Game B" in Atomic Punk, or as "Bomber Man" in the Japanese version Bomber Boy. The level sizes were reduced and for some reason the FOV actually feels nice even though the screen is smaller.

The cool thing about the first two games though was the insanely OP power up that made you immune to fire, allowing you to spam your own bombs without taking damage. Later games would reduce this to a hazard suit which gave you 10-15 seconds of invincibility, but the flame-proof power up lasted indefinitely, as long as you didn't die.

Those same strategies are used in II, 90, and 93. The old-school games all had just one power up per stage so they were just as slow. But what made them more fun is that they had more variants in level design, some were basic squares, some were scrolling horizontally, some scrolled vertically, they had better music, graphics, and 90 and 93 had boss fights, and 93 has some of the most challenging fights in the entire series. Just trust me as somebody that's played them all that the first one with a never changing level design, a six second audio loop, and slow gameplay isn't as good. If you want the old-school experience and you want to play on the NES, II is the much better experience. 93 is my personal favorite of all the older ones.

It was an early Famicom game. It wasn't designed to be a deep, engrossing experience, but instead a very puzzle-like arcade game that you're supposed to play over and over again as you religiously study the strategy guide (sold separately).

Yeah, it really is. But like a lot of Japanese arcade style games, there's a surprising number of cryptic shit, like bonus items that show up only after doing stuff you'd never guess like running around the perimeter of a level after defeating all the enemies but only on stage 13 or whatever. Stuff like that would probably get collected, but it was more fun to discover them yourself or spread by word of mouth

If you had a grenade would you throw it, put it down on the ground or kick it across the floor?

>> No.8661098

>>8661082
Kick it. It goes much further: all the way to the end of the screen, it instantly paralyzes the enemies, and even instant kills some of them. The bomb throw only goes at most 3 tiles away. It's only useful for throwing over a soft block.

Also, the game would be way too easy if you started with these power ups. Might as well start with the detonator too.

>> No.8661107

>>8661098
Throwing bombs can send them skipping over a lot of blocked terrain. It also stuns enemies it lands on an kills them before they can recover.
Either way, whatever allows you to simply attack at range by actually tossing the damn things at enemies would've made more sense than just putting them on the ground and then running away.

>> No.8661119

>>8661107
But mastering the timing of your attacks are the basic foundation of the game, what sets it apart from every other game. You still have time based attacks with range weapons or with the detonator, but these are upgrades, they make you feel stronger and they make you care about playing intensely and not dying, there'd be no stakes or upping the gameplay if you started out with them or if you never lost them.

>> No.8661441

>>8657364
I've been playing this lately emulated on the wii with a cube controller, shits fun but you need to be patient and kind of autistic and like me who likes to bomb everything on screen to get the powerups, once you start moving faster, getting longer explosions and pass thru walls things get funny, you also learn to watch the enemy behaviour and trick them to their doom, you can also detonate the bombs manually

>> No.8661530

Yes. This game, Bomberman II, 90, and 93 are like that. Once you get to Super and 94 you get multiple power ups per level, and enemies drop power ups too if you defeat them a certain way.

I don't know how you got that from my post. I'm arguing against stagnation, I'm arguing for progressively better gameplay. And the series has had multiple games that broke the formula and explored different genres: the 3 US 64 games (Action Adventure and Platforming), Bomberman Generation (Action Adventure), Pocket Bomberman (Platformer), Bomberman Quest, Bomberman Tournament, Bomberman Story (RPGs), Bomberman Wars (SRPG), Bomberman Fight (Fighting), Bomberman Fantasy Racing (Racing), Bomberman Land, Bomberman Jetters (party games), Panic Bomber (puzzle), and the most recent game Bomber Girl is also a totally different take on the series. Then you have the old mainline games that all introduce new elements each title, like switch puzzles, rideable animals, charaboms, interactive stage elements, hazards, boss fights, non linear stage progression, co-op sidekicks, and so on
