What's the best way to play arcade games: with emulated CPU overclock to remove slowdown, or at default with arcade-accurate slowdown?

Doesn't matter. Play it how you want. Nobody cares.

Real boards

I prefer emulating with slowdown.

You have to test them both. Even some great players have trouble changing setup as their muscle memory is incredibly tied to the timings he grew used to.
Gold standard is original PCB, but if you’re not playing competitively do whatever rocks your boat. Ofc some options are way more expensive than others so...

Didn’t some games use the slowdown as a way to add bullettime when there’s a lot to dodge on the screen? That’s what my friends and I always assumed when playing metal slug at the arcade.

Is there any downside to overclocking the emulated CPU in every game? Would doing a 200% or even 400% default overclock in every game cause any issues?

on real hardware it can cause crashes, graphical glitches and timers running too fast, sound issue but you will just have to try it out.

Why wouldn't they just set the game to switch to a more consistent half speed instead? Although I guess their playtesting would balance around slowdown either way.

I mean, I never thought about it too deeply, but I don’t think they ever set out to “create” bullet time by filling the screen with extra bullets, but rather, they were able to make the difficulty more of a matter of weaving between bullets since they knew the game would be slowing down anyway.
