Zero 2 Alpha is very broken and is considered inferior by competitive players.
I am not competitive myself and play FTGs mostly casually but I really don't like the cosmetic changes to the game. Must be nostalgia growing up with Alpha 2 cabinet in a nearby mall.

>Zero 2 Alpha is very broken and is considered inferior by competitive players.
What's broken about it?
What players?
This is one of those things that gets repeated in the FGC but no one actually knows what it means so they just accept it and pass it on.

The real reason why Zero 2 Alpha and Upper Edition 3 were not popular in the west is because of lack of access (and pros wanting to keep the broken shit they used to win)

Idk but I haven't seen much Zero 2 Alpha tourneys either while regular Zero 2 is still played occasionally (you may find recordings from legit jp arcades on Youtube).
I guess back in the day pros just moved to Vampire Saviour, judging from the japanese arcade centric mags.
I don't know what is broken in Z2A myself but one of the arguments I remember seeing is CCs being buffed further while they vere op in vanilla already.

>> No.8638909

>>8638837
Zero 2 Alpha was mostly just an excuse to re-release Zero 2 with the option to play as Evil Ryu to Japanese players, who was previously only available on Alpha 2 in the west. Its other changes, besides the option to play as the SF2CE rendition of any character who was in that game (not just Zangief and Dhalsim), are kinda minor compared to the usual Capcom sequel/upgrade.

it's not the best in the series, it's not the worst. it's... ok. it has some very nice songs in it, but quite a few of the songs in-game are all over the place in terms of quality and composition, for some reason.

They were nerfed to half a bar and a half of super meter instead of one bar. Other than that I don't know how they are potentially stronger.

Is that the early Japanese version without Evil Ryu and his unfinished programming? If so, that is pretty good since that character has everyone else behaving differently than they should.

>>8638829
Imagine constant Ken vs Ken matches. Zero 2 Alpha (Alpha 2 Gold), took the approach to buff the top tiers and nerf everyone else. I had to ditch my main who was originally mid-tier and go to my tertiary character of originally high tier Rolento to even be viable in Z2A only because his original/custom combos still work. I think what makes it less interesting is the universal nerf of zero/alpha counters taking 1.5 meters to perform, which means every character has less tools and or slower access to potential than it was originally with only 1 meter. The nerfs to bottom tier characters like Gen, Birdie, Zangief, means it is even more unlikely to even see the characters already. Top tier characters tend to have more/faster movement options, so they can cancel into original/custom combos which maintains velocity and has match viablility opposed to characters like my main (Vega/M.Bison) which got reduced movement speed and reduced jump speed leading to only one theoretical startup if opponent is dumb enough to continually jump into it without guarding. It is why you see those glitch videos where characters continually float and attack.

Nice! Always wanted to own that. I have so many good memories with the game. I remember friends taking me to the various location tests before the game was officially released in arcades and the game just fit me like a glove. A local Capcom arcade even was so kind to even lend us some arcade cabinets to run an impromptu Alpha 2 tournament at a corner of a different event, and they spoiled us. I'm kind of amazed at the good nature which surrounded the game.

>>8640157
The Sega Saturn was a wonderful bargain console that had a great port of Alpha 2 which is where I established my play and comfort using a Saturn pad. Found some footage of my Rolento, and yes played on a Sega Saturn pad using 2 thumbs (it is my highlights, since my 12 losses in a row were cut out): https://youtu.be/TvzxDLTazkI

>>8640941
No one is ever afraid of playing against Zangief. It takes a very different mentality most would not have to take hits for 80-90% of a round, just for the dopamine rush of landing a singular hit or grapple. I only remember Zangief having a key advantage over Chun in A3, and I guess there are a couple specialists out there that dare to play the character.

It was released before the RAM carts were available, so it is understandable why it is not a feature of the release. As a consolation, if you play a mirror match, like Zangief vs. Zangief, on the Saturn version you gain back the missing animation frames and since I don't have a trained ear, maybe the sound is improved too.

This thread got me reading about Street Fighter Alpha anthology again.
There's a chance there's an undumped NEW version of Street Fighter Zero 2 on there called Street Fighter Zero 2 Dash with playable Cammy on CPS2. That would be fun for fightcade.

Please stop pretending you know anything about the A2 meta, Zangief is among the best characters in the game under Ken and Rose. he has:
>normals with huge range and great priority
>longest range Valle CC in the game
>one of the most damaging CCs in the game
>lariat is a godly AA with a lot of invul
>can command grab out of the first frame of blockstun allowing easy tick SPD setups
You seem to love posting this collection of games you have every time a Capcom fighting thread is up, maybe try going on figthcade and actually playing them once in awhile.

There are so many options to play the game. Fortunately, it is one of the widely available titles for cheap on Japanese Sega Saturn, so it remains inexpensive.

>>8647464
I've played a lot of the game and just speaking from experience. I am not a tournament player, but I play a bit with friends and I do alright. A2 Zangief does have good tools, but when it comes time to play seriously, no one would opt to use the character. His normals are pretty good, I think Evil Ryu has a longer range in blowing out a character on CC activation, everyone has damaging CCs but Rolento has one of the easiest to do and much higher damage as even in my messups in the video can still demonstrate, no arguments about the lariat nor command grabs but as stated earlier Zangief will eat damage all day and only a rare theoretical breed of person would use the character in such oppressive and unfavorable conditions.

>>8647969
Nope, never. None of my friends play grapplers, no one plays them in the arcades I've been to, only recently in more modern games are there viable grappler play (aside from Damdai's T.Hawk in ST).

>>8644831
I think that is like the placebo effect of the N64 expansion pack made my friends believe No Mercy runs better with the added RAM than with the standard jumper pack. The collection has Z2A/A2G instead of standard Z2/A2 which has the negative effects to playing. For a real fun collection, try out the games on PS2, you can have a IZM where you parry, which is a disappointment that it is not included in the most recent announcement for Capcom fighting games: https://youtu.be/zfKIsLJ0m0w
