>sell “Red Alarm” as a Star Fox game
>sell “Telaroboxer” as Virtual Punch-Out!
>release Zero Racers, since it was basically finished
>release Face Ball, since the game was already finished
Fixed it. Virtual Boy failed because of marketing. If you just called things what they fucking are, it would have sold better. Nobody is gonna buy a game they’ve never heard of like Red Alarm or Telaroboxer, but they’ll buy a Star Fox or Punch-Out! game. If Nintendo cleaned up the library of this console, it could have worked.

Imagine a virtual boy with
>Mario Clash
>Mario Tennis
>Wario Land
>Tetris
>Star Fox
>Punch-Out!
>F-Zero

That’s a much better lineup of launch titles. Face Ball could easily have been used as a prototype for a Virtual Boy port of Doom. You could literally call it “Virtual Doom” and it would print money. Especially in 1995.

God I wish I was on Nintendo’s marketing team in 1995. How did they fuck it up this bad?

Imagine stabbing yourself in both eyes with a red laser pen. Thats what playing the virtual boy is like. You can put any software you want on it, good, bad, nintendo mascots or new ips, it doesn’t matter. When I look into the eye-bleeding goggles, I hurt. Lasik surgery was more appealing to the eye. This is a torture device. My advice is to play it in black and white on an emulator if there’s something that interest you.

I can only imagine how terrible the VB version of Starfox and Punch Out would have been.

It was a neat and ambitious console, and I still wanted one, but I wouldnt have played more than 2 or 3 games on it before abandoning it. I'm glad I didnt make my dad waste the money.

If they had made it backwards compatible with the Game Boy it could have done a lot better. It wouldn't make them play in 3D but you'd instantly have a robust library of games that can be played in a new way. Then they could do for Virtual Boy compatibility what they were already doing for Super Game Boy and start making Game Boy carts with built in support for 3D compatibility when played on a VB in addition to dedicated VB games.

What's the opposite of rose-tinted glasses? When you're obviously embellishing memories of a consumer product.

I've tried it. I had one for a while ten years ago before I sold it. The red and black perception is not the issue. The product would have never been released and FCC approved where it found that it had actually caused direct eye-strain and headaches. The way the system works mechanically is brilliant. It's just a shame that they never get a handle on how to suggest the best way to play the system ergonomically. It's like the current situation today with VR. When you get it right it can be an amazingly immersive experience. But it's always going to be a tough sell towards the retarded layman.

It's really not that bad on your eyes, most people who feel bad from playing it get head and neck aches from straining their neck, from playing it in an uncomfortable position (which reflects on the design not being great, but in another way).

If you can find a comfortable position to play in, and you take a break every hour or so, you can readily enjoy its small library. The games are generally ok, some are even good (Wario, Teleroboxer), but they are kind of doomed by being on this awkward system, and most don't play much at all on the virtual reality gimmick. Emulation really saves these games.

>> No.8642672

>>8642653
This. Best options i have for playing is a table i found that is the perfect height to sit and play and i tilt the system forward. Other best way is to remove it from the stand and lay down with it sitting on your face(get a piece of foam so it doesn't dig into the top of your nose maybe)

Indeed not a simple set up and play but using a real VB is an experience maybe only replicated with a VR set closing off everything but the game, but you still dont get the nostalgic scent of the visor!

And yet it did. It was all over the gaming news at the time that people did experience headaches and eyestrain directly from using the VB and that the only solution was to severely limit time looking at it. You kids believe in bullshit revisionist goddamn history manufactured by these fucking insecure shit companies like Nintendo to not sour their shit reputation for this sort of thing. It's fucking pathetic. You're just a goddamn volunteer shill for a disreputable corporation trying to save face.
>current situation today with VR
A fucking stupid goddamn gimmick that gives people motion sickness and sensory deprivation that can be fucking dangerous all for something that isn't that goddamn special and can be done without the fucking expense and gimmick of a fucking pair of displays strapped to your skull.

I was also there and owned one. The red and black perception is absolutely the issue for me personally. It absolutely causes headaches and just is not fun to look at, its like a much worse version of night vision goggles malfunctioning. I’d rather play atari 2600 or game and watch games because of the display. I honestly don’t think I’m the only one. Luckily emulation exists and there are options. Yeah the ergonomics suck and there were few quality games from known IPs and little good marketing. But when you hear hoofbeats, think horses not zebras. Its so interesting to me that some people will say the virtual boys problems were anything and everything but the obvious bloody-eyed elephant in the room.

I owned it back in the day and still play mine. Never had issues with it that caused any kind of physical pain or eye strain that was any different then playing normal games in a dark room and turning the lights on. It was still an issue to properly set up and play and never was going to be popular but i would have liked at least one more full year on the market for the stuff in production.

I know but there is a reason for this.
I have found the perfect sitting position for playing VB
1: elbows on that white metal thing on top of the plastic container
2: hands holding controller behind the system
3: lean entire tower its on towards me when its on my face until in comfortable sitting position.

If stand was on "the right way", my arms would be poked by it and i feel this gives more balance also.

It really is unfortunate we never got any ports of Virtual Boy games for the 3DS. It's basically the perfect system for it, after all. And unfortunately, existing VB emulators are way too slow on it to be usable.

Thankfully, some random anon from /emugen/ is currently working on a Virtual Boy emulator for the 3DS, although at the moment it only aims to get Wario Land working full speed on it. Looks promising.
