Pollution maybe in terms of high garbage output? I don't think SC2k had a garbage mechanic, but I may be wrong. Maybe they just used generic pollution as a substitute.

After spending a page and a half talking about how the sports franchise publishers are playing it safe by making only small, relatively cheap updates to the SNES versions of their games this year, but without actually having acknowledged that this is probably because the SNES is fading, Nintendo Power hopefully supposes that a Madden '98 for SNES will even exist.

...And then I go check Wikipedia and find that the last eight games released for the SNES are:

And yet they've been holding back! I don't think they've said much of anything about the details of Dragon Quest V, for example. They seemed to skip right to VI, maybe because they thought it had the better chance of localization? And for all the gushing they've done over various Final Fantasy games, they never say anything about FFV. They poured love all over Secret of Mana, but I don't think they've mentioned anything about the details of its sequel. Some other big, impressive Square games have come out I think - some Romancing SaGa games, Rudra no Hihou, probably more - and the magazine has said little or nothing of them. They could easily give some of that stuff the "BEST EPIC EVER" treatment that they gave to Ogre Battle and Chrono Trigger.

I don't really know what drove them to choose which Japan-only games to actually introduce their readers to. Why Tales of Phantasia and Fire Emblem, but not those others? I keep thinking it has to do with their assessment of the games' chance of being localized, but there could be other reasons. Maybe the editors just had trouble getting information about some games, or didn't happen to personally pay much attention to them and get excited about them, or something. They had to deal with the language barrier too after all.

I begged my dad for it after reading this article and he called every retail store in town who sold games and none of them had it, nor had even heard of it. Not really. While FF7 is a year away in the US, in Japan it came out in JANUARY of 1997... so other magazines were talking about it for way longer. Notably, GameFan magazine had a huge 8 spread talking about it in their May 1996 issue with lots of in develop screenshots, character art, models, and early assets. It's not hard to figure the artist looked at other magazines, or even found a picture scanned in on that new-fangled internet thing.
