There are a few details that are different even if you set it up to use the strict Doom compatibility setting. The ones I can remember are autoaim being a bit better in GZDoom and RNG working different. Although those are things most wouldn't really care about unless they're speedrunners or purists.

Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Rise Of The Triad, Heretic, Hexen, Duke Nukem 3D, Quake, and Shadow Warrior, are all open source, and most of them have convenient sourceports to let you play them on a modern computer.
Powerslave isn't open source I think, but it just got a new official port. Doom 64 isn't open source, but there's an old free PC port of it, as well as a new official port which also adds a new episode of levels (being available on consoles, also).

Generally it's a great game, but I hate the massive hitboxes, enemy/ item respawn and the shitty platforming sections (where you have to jump at the right moment, glide at the right moment but also have the proper angle otherwise you're going to fall in the lava/ acid and insta-die and have to replay the entire level, fuck you).

Inherently, GzDoom uses true RNG over the original game's deterministic pseudo-RNG. In practice, this difference is extremely subtle and approximations are great, but it does entail GzDoom not being compatible with vanilla demo recordings. The tradeoff is that it's a lot more modding friendly.
GzDoom uses a much more accurate and reliable hit detection, among many things preventing the occasional Mancubus fireball from ignoring walls, attacks from occasionally stopping midair for no discernible reason, and making player melee a lot more functional (in vanilla, it's awkward and clunky to try to melee monsters with big hitboxes).

Things which are adjustable in options is stuff like monsters and players not being 'infinitely tall', which actually means that monster melee range isn't vertically infinite, and that players and monsters can now pass above and below each other if there is space for that. In practice, this can give the player SOME advantages in SOME scenarios, but what it also does is allow flying monsters to freely pass over ground monsters which normally would have impeded their progress, which can make SOME encounters more difficult. In short, this one is kind of a 'double-edged sword' for how it goes both ways.
You have freelook with the option of disabling auto-aim, as well as jumping and crouching, and these can obviously be exploited in numerous ways, but I feel that I can just avoid using them when it's obvious I should (ergo breaking intended map sequence).
A big appeal with Doom is how it can be so very altered and personalized, though, so if you think using those kinds of things would be fun, by all means use them, as long as you're conscious about their nature.

Doom Shinobi still isn't out yet so I tried Doom Fighters in the meantime and it's actually really fun. Little things like being able to pick up and throw barrels, enemies flying into other enemies from your dash kick or throw dealing damage, and enemy health bars like an old beat-em-up add a lot. Finding where the Captured Marine and Crucible are hidden is fun too. Doom level design is oddly fitting for the gameplay too, playing through Episode 1 with a completely different combat style and camera is still a breeze. Very impressive and makes me excited for Shinobi even more.

Sadly loading up other games with Fighters active doesn't work properly, mostly because non-Doom enemies don't seem to be able to be grabbed (and of course there's no barrels/Crucibles/Marines).

Well now I do have words. This mod is a really technically impressive piece of work that plays not very well. Pretty much all you do is spam the same 2 basic attacks (is there even a difference between them?) and the one time-freeze-instakill special and everything dies. It's almost funny how inferior it is in every meaningful gameplay respect to Demonsteele, a mod that was barely finished and held together with duct tape as far as I could tell. It's also funny how this is almost exactly the same mod as the author's other two mods, just with MOAR GRAFIX.

The worst thing that you cant change in ZDoom is how Cacos are blasted back halfway across the map by rockets, way farther than vanilla. Sounds like it would be good, but then you cant aim at them easily since theyre too far away, or autoaim chooses another closer monster, or what have you, and they come back to bite your ass.

I think my only real issue with the level is that areas that are gated with a timer can have a few areas changed out with switch presses. I typically don't leave arenas until I kill everything but it does wear at me when I can leave just by stalling time.

Found this little gem https://github.com/Lewisk3/UltimateClassicMinimap

and managed to tweak a few things more to my liking (as I do with most mods - I do it for my own use) after diving into the code
However I would like some help here: It uses TEXTURES and pieces of Titlepic for some icons, and object sprites for other. There are some mods that alter titlepic so that screws things quite a bit. It also varies size of icons to some ridiculous unreadable degree. I want to make it display (different) abstract icons of a constant size for enemies, items and guns, instead of using full item sprites as it does now.
Also a weird bug: It originally draws a ThickLines 2 pixel wide for walls. I made it draw regular lines instead, that should always be 1 pixel wide (basically replaced all instances of ThickLine with just line that does not have thickness parameter), but for some reason if the line crosses the border circle, it is always drawn as 2 pixel wide, despite there no ThickLine left in the code. How do I fix that?

In HDest, how do I use Thunderbuster against barons effectively? I try to explode it under their feet at range, but it seems to randomly take from 1 to 5 blasts to kill one. Spray in short bursts. Let up and dodge as soon as your rate of fire starts to slow. It's a good idea to switch to a bullet weapon after you break the shield, you'll do a better job of stunlocking it or just build up a ton of bleed and let it die from that.

Kuchitsu is a good short episode. Pretty easy, but it makes proper use of the Doom 2 roster, and it's a good training course on handling hot starts. Bring your own armor.
D2TWID, Mars War, and TVR are solid low-end megawads. Don't go to map33 or map32 in D2TWID, the former just sucks and the latter softlocks. Pack a radsuit for TVR and try not to lose it before map06.
Plutonia is a good time too. Despite its reputation, it actually comes very close to what I'd consider ideal HD encounter design. HD also uses a unique spawnfilter for it that cuts down on the chaingunner and archvile population.

1. game has many many enemies on screen at once.
2. enemies are all extremely deadly, reacting quickly, dealing comparatively high damage to their counterparts in similar games, and situationally switching attack patterns. the lowest tier hitscanner can ventilate you in about 2 seconds if left unchecked. a relatively common fodder enemy totes a cannon that can instagib you if you let it fire off. weak melee units can kill you in a couple of hits. in addition to upgraded firepower, heavier units are faster, smarter, and less susceptible to flinching.
you are expected to treat encounters with almost the same reverence as a multiplayer shooter, always being on your toes, always reacting asap, always hitting shots.
3. despite this, there are tons of tools at your disposal to help you feasibly survive, though none of which are an "i win" button. an example: blocking with melee makes you reactively cut down hitscan bullets, but you can only catch up to 10~ per second, or 5 at once. shotgunners and large groups of hitscanners can breach through. they may also chuck a grenade at you if you hold that stance too long or briefly leave line of sight.
4. different characters who each have different movement abilities based on the animal they are. most have access to a basic weapon roster, others have it switched out entirely for a special one.
5. different classes that offer both buffs to specific weapon types, as well as access to simple constructs. weapon buffs are minor and don't turn any one weapon into more of a workhorse than it ought to be. constructs can be stuff like impromptu walls, spike pits, or jump pads.

tl;dr serious sam on serious difficulty but genuinely masochistic and with every movement trick ever included in a video game. and also enemies that can catch up to you despite your crazy movement.

That's a great add-on, i use it in my default mod loadout. It plays nicely with other mods. I love the way it shows keys on the perimeter like Quest objectives. The option menu is great too, it allows you to smoothly position it at any XY position via sliders, in realtime.
I think it only works in GZDooM versions 4.x+, as it uses ZScript? Not sure about that.

I made it up partways through level 3 with prodigious use of quicksaving. The levels got easier but I still didn't have enough ammo. Then I saw your comment and switched to brutal doom and I'm no longer having ammo issues. As a result, the first level on BD black metal is easier than on UV doom.

More importantly, I don't hate it anymore on brutal doom, because it's no longer so slow and tedious. You should tell your uncle to specifically suggest using brutal doom in the .txt file. and also to move the note about vertical mouselook to the top of the .txt file because I didn't read everything in it before playing and most other people won't either.

The Synthesizer gun is the pistol with the big gem there. It'll work kinda like Cave Story's Nemesis: Shoot bad guys, build up meter. As the meter gets higher the range gets shittier. Then you cash the meter in for powerups and stuff.

The other gun is a rapid fire dart pistol, which you'll also be able to load crystal bolts and use whatever current potion subweapon you have as a long range attack with different effects. Samson's gonna be fun.

The whipshot's gonna have two modes if I pull it off right: Default mode will shoot a short range projectile with a chain that does okay-ish damage, but if I do it right I'll have it so you can shoot it faster at close range so there'll be incentive to get in close and just rapidly thump targets.

Then the alt mode will extend chain out and Samson will swing out and launch out essentially a railgun attack where the tip does the most damage with a little explosive whip crack. I might play around with other effects depending on the spell cube item you got, we'll see.

It'll use that fancy DeHackery, running in DSDA, Woof, Doom Retro, and whichever other ports support that. Possibly From Doom With Love, if that can play Ad Mortem also.

Then we'll provide two compat patches to allow it to play in GzDoom. Patch 1 adds the code for the new props and the final boss (as well as eventual truecolor .png frames for any sprites which may not have translated well to Doom's palette), and then Patch 2 will have the code for the weapons and stuff, along with truecolor .png frames for those.
This way, the DeHacked side can be as versatile as necessary (even if it's not for very much), while 94 can be playable on GzDoom. I figure I can also throw in a couple of existing visual effects I have lying around, so the patches aren't made obsolete whenever Graf may get around to completing support for the MBF21/DsDeHacked stuff.

Splitting the GzDoom patches into two is so that it'll be easier for someone to load up a gameplay mod with 94. The props and the final boss don't replace anything, while the weapons replace the player pawn and weapons, so if you wanted to play it with say, Zero Tolerance, you would load Zero Tolerance instead of 94's weapon set.

This will be minimal extra work, as the Decorate code is written first and then copied into the DeHackery stuff with DecoHack.

Health values are comparable to Doom but everything dies quicker. There's just not any grunts and dogs past the "base" levels, a concern custom maps don't really care about and there's still zombies.
