Mystic Cave is the most out-of-place stage in the 2D Sonic games. Something about it doesn't fit the Sonic world.

I'm trying to figure out why you might feel this way. Is it the color palette? The music? Or do you feel that caves themselves aren't very Sonic-y?

I can't pinpoint why, it's a mix of a lot of stuff. The wood crates, the rails, tile design, it's like it's too "human", or like it belongs to another game. Music is kinda spooky too and doesn't fit the usual Sonic tunes (although Sonic 2 in general has some weird OST)

>> No.8621473

yeah, it's a little uncanny like the game gear sonic games. the crates might be the most glaring part, but it doesn't have any long sweeping motions and the vertical axis feels a little compressed. sonic usually has more open space. I do think it's one of the best sonic 2 levels though.

No, since just the OP statement was too retarded to consider other retarded posts in the thread

How the absolute fuck could you think that with neon green rocks and radiant purple crystals? Is just seeing infrastructure of a mining operation enough to make you question how "realistic" it is?

Eggman is human retard, as far as we know he did all of that

And we already know Sonic's world had humans in the jap canon, even if they did a piss poor job at communicating that as a fact, but the point stands, what games do you seriously think Sonic has absolutely no "Earthly" ties to it? Because that is what I would call a non Sonic game then.

Sonic 2 in general has a bit of a strange feeling about it, which was probably the Western influence. Like Chemical Plant Zone with the city in the background, that looks like it belongs in Streets of Rage, or having a level set on an oil rig.
The other 16-bit era Sonic games are more based around natural feeling environments, ancient ruins, and high tech sci-fi. The only thing that stands out to me is Carnival Night Zone in Sonic 3, which was basically a repeat of Casino Zone.

>> No.8625371

>>8625265
There's been plenent of Adventurefags posting Japanese manuals from the classic era impling humans always existed

I don't personally care about that, since they weren't in the final product, they don't matter to me. But in truth, SA1 implies humans always existed as Japs wanted Sonic on Earth, not some planet named Mobius. Imo I never liked the name Mobius, and don't mind it being called Earth, I just hate that Eggman is a cartoon human with cartoon animals like Sonic, but real life humans or anime humans are meant to make up the rest of humanity. It's clearly shows a lack of creativity and is lazy af to me.

The level is more like a Sonic 1 stage than a Sonic 2 one (more focused on tricky platforming), which makes it a lot harder and it doesn't have many areas where you can speed around. That's about the only way it stands out. Graphically it's not much different than, say, quartz quadrant or lava reef.

To elaborate 3&K,2,and Mania understood that what made Sonic 1 good was the platforming aspect, CD made the mistake of thinking it was the Metroid like quality of the levels and tried to make it some kind of exploration game.

That doesn't work reliably, there's a part where you are blocked and you have to mash jump because you can only pass it while already half-submerged. So you either mash or die. Plus the hit detection of the Sonic games has always been fucked so sometimes you die randomly in the oil.
