I've never owned a playstation in my life, despite being 25.

I'm planning on rectifying that when I get a PS4 probably next year.

However, I'm here to ask you guys what the best PSX games are. I've always wanted to play FF7, and I'm currently about eight hours into that. Other than that though, consider me a PSX virgin. I'm also looking forward to trying out FF8 and comparing the two for myself.

You get bonus points if they're easy to control on an android phone, as I'll be going on a vacation soon that will include many, many hours on end in cars and airplanes. I'm currently attempting to acquire a USB OTG cable so I can plug a controller into my phone and not have to worry about shitty controls, but until then, touchscreen friendly games are greatly appreciated.

you can get FF7 built for modern PCs on the Square Enix site

Buy a PS3, a significant amount of great PSX games can be bought cheaply on the Playstation Store. You can get a PS3 for a little over $130 if you shop around.

Just don't get the old backwards compatible models. Their lifespans are really short and they've been out for years.

>> No.861904

I think there are some infographics andpeople might give you grief about FF7 (it's a polarizing title but I love it)

Anyway, the next game to play is Castlevania: Symphony of The Night

That's probably going to be erroneous although with the x86 specs the PS4 has it could run the PSX & PS2 emulators full speed no sweat.

It's pathetic that video game consoles have anything other than an infinite lifespan with maintenance, but compared to the 360 PS3s are extremely durable. Even when the motherboards go out, rarely, they're much more tolerant of reflowing than 360 motherboards. You could probably do it in your oven.

>> No.862004

I've had two of them break within the space of two months with infrequent use. I got 40 hours out of each them if my Dark Souls save data is accurate. New consoles simply do not have a long lifespan. There is a lot of shit that can go wrong with them, and the power of their components makes shit easier to go wrong.

You know why handhelds and old consoles never break until several years later? Because they don't overheat. Older consoles don't even have fans for cooling because they weren't needed.

Until a method of prolonging the life of electronics that are pushed to the limit is found, this problem will only get worse. I have a betting pool on how long it will take for the next gen to start having major hardware problems. I'm betting 10-12 months. I have that little faith in modern consoles.

That's why a lot of us are finally joining the PC master race after our experiences this generation - and the fact that both the XBO and PS4 are x86 platforms only makes the decision that much easier.

Some titles that I think won't get mentioned here.

Shooter
>Einhander
Great 2d Style shooter with some awesome 3d graphics, pretty fucking tough too, kick ass soundtrack also.

Flying
>Ace Combat 2
You can really see the skeleton of the future series coming up in this one. From the branching mission paths and the appearance of Kei Nagase, it's a great game.

Racing
>Rage Racer
I love all the Ridge games, and while Ridge Racer Type 4 is the Superior God of them, I think Rage Racer deserves some love and credit. Fantastic fucking soundtrack.

Platformer
>Tomba! or Klonoa The Door to Phantomile, or even Pandemonium
Three fantastic platformers that really get challenging in the later stages

Vehicular Combat
>Vigilante 8
Twisted Metal is the game everyone associates the franchise with, and while TM is fun, I found Vigilante 8 had a hell of a lot more replay value.

Some honourable mentions include

>Pitfall - The Mayan Adventure
>Jet Moto 1 and 2
>Wild 9
>No One Can Stop Mr. Domino
>Blast Chamber
>Grid Runner
>Time Commando
>Medievil 1 and 2
>Syphon Filter

I can go one but those are some of my favorites. Trying to remember a game from when I was really young on the PS1. Had a bunch of people, kind of chibi-ish japanese characters I guess, it was all polygonal 3d, and it was sort of like a sports party game.

>> No.863254

Jumping Flash

Just

Play it

I always tell myself "Why the hell did I enjoy this game in the first place" and then I find myself playing that shit through the end over and over. I've lost count to how many times I replayed it. Despite being a bit easy, just rushing through the game gives you the most amazing feeling in the world.

>That music
>THAT FINAL BOSS MUSIC
>Simplistic Ye Old 3D graphics that somehow just work and you can't get enough of it
>The liberty
>All that jumping
>Sixtuple fucking jumping
>Gazing to the world from atop as you slowly fall down
>Using fucking fireworks as weapons
>That nostalgic ending that somehow gives a feeling of an old movie
>The narrator ringing through your head every time you think of the title screen

I just can't. I just can't get over the fact that this series just got forgotten. It just had so much charm. I understand if some people don't like it, but this game will honestly always be in my heart.

PSX software emulation is relatively easy to pull off given the difference in power between the two consoles.
PS2 however is considerably harder, and while older PS3 models had the PS2 hardware itself inside the case to ensure compatibility it was later removed to reduce production costs and push HD remakes

Xenogears and Grandia are my favourite games, along with Mother 3. I sincerely recommend giving them a try. Xenogears is a better recommendation than any FF for the console in my opinion - it started development as the initial version of FFVII but became it's own thing. Anything good about 7's story was siphoned out from Xenogear's initial script.

MGS1 is a good way to enter the series. It's like Die Hard with a spy as the protagonist. It's like an excellent game/movie hybrid.

Bushido Blade 2 and Tekken 3 are fucking excellent fighters for the console. Bushido Blade 2 in particular is really unique and a ton of fun. It has realistic weapon mechanics that result in lots of instant kills.

Crash Team Racing is FUCKING FUN.

>> No.875956

>>875947

Also, Megaman Legends 1 and 2 are really fun and atmospheric 3D dungeon crawler/action games. The overall story will never be finished but it was really good.

I think the graphics for both are pretty much the most charming of the 5th gen console games.

Also, Harvest Moon Back To Nature is probably one of the best in the series. Farm/waifu mechanics are cool, but the overall design of the game is really cool.

I recommend Clock Tower for PS1 for a horror game. It's really unique and pretty scary for what it is.
