This game is literally Japanese Eurojank. And nice 1985 graphics in a game that was released after the SNES was out.

Boomers discovered NES games through cartridges. Zoomers discover them through emulators, so they have a wider grasp on overall 8-bit gaming landscape.

I'm a late-80s millennial, and I've been fascinated with AWOG since I first discovered its existence in the early 2000s. Even beyond the absolutely atrocious quality, there's something fascinating about a Garfield NES game that was only released in Japan. It absolutely seems like something developed for a US audience, and yet it never came out in the US.

Also, Garfield autism is only a notch below Sonic autism, so that could be part of why zoomies love it.

Platformers are also generally approachable, compared to things like untranslated RPGs and sims, or more Japanesey games like horse racing games and mahjong. The shittiness of a low quality platformer can be experienced and "appreciated" regardless of language and culture.

Yeah except while we were paying £2.99 for classics such as Monty on the Run and Treasure Island Dizzy, Amerisharts were getting jewed out of the best part of $100 for NES shitware like Back to the Future lmao

They may have not had a Garfield license for North America, but maybe they considered it too shitty to release as well. Paws, Inc had strict Q/C standards for Garfield products back in the 80s-90s.

Pretty sure Caught in the Act was the only decent Garfield game ever.

The box and game data itself has all the proper copyright, with the (unique?) cover art even featuring the Jim Davis signature stamp. I'd have to imagine the game was initially intended for a US release, and that Paws approved of it before development began. Maybe they saw the finished or in-development product and realized it was too shitty to release, but figured the harm done by releasing a sub-par game strictly in the Japanese market wasn't going to harm the brand enough to outweigh the profit.

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if Paws Inc even commissioned the game in the first place, seems odd for a Japanese publisher to, entirely on their own, decide to develop a Garfield Famicom game.

Transformers: Comvoy no Nazo could have been a similar deal, but also they maybe didn't bother because it would have gotten to the West too late to help promote the movie. At least that has the excuse of being an early Famicom game from 86 while Garfield is a disgrace for something that came out so late.

Why did some no-name Japanese developer wind up handling the IP, and why didn't they go with the iteration of the franchise that would've been most appealing to kids at the time of release?
