The guy you're replying to is saying it's not retro cause this thread was started due to the just announced Switch remake.
As for your question: the rules already have exceptions like that. For example Sonic Unleashed isn't retro according to the rules despite coming out on the PS2 since it released so late in its lifespan.

I usually hate remakes/remasters/whatever, but Live A Live was a VERY flawed game. I love the game to death, but it had a lot of really annoying issues (especially the extremely dumb AI who would sometimes get stuck in a pathfinding loop and walk back and forth forever because they can't get a clear a shot on you with a specific attack). A remake/remaster that keeps the good elements and rebuilds the shittier ones is exactly what the game's always needed.

I don't think this is a bad idea, but I do think GameCube/Xbox/PS2 should stay in the retro category. Sure, the generation is different from previous ones, but there's definitely a cutoff in terms of what devs wanted to accomplish when making video games between it and the PS3/360 generation. The PS2 is full of ambitious games that strove to do something new, along with plenty of budget games that still managed to be a lot of fun. PS3/360 onwards is where video games fell into the practice of companies churning out samey games that fit into one of several cookie cutter gameplay styles, and everyone is so focused on having the most realistic graphics that games cost a fortune to make and dev time ends up being several years at the very least, so nobody experiments or innovates anymore. There are increasingly few exceptions of budget games or games with unique art direction anymore, unless we're counting indie games but those are something else entirely

>I think the birth of PlayStation works well as the divide between retro and "post-retro"
The problem is that every generation starting with gen 5 has a major change that could be argued to be the end of the retro era. Like gen 7's shift in focus to online games and digital purchases. It's easier to just divide them by decade, since absolutely nobody agrees on where the technological divide should be.

>> No.8614715

>>8613805
It's impossible to talk about retro gaming without talking about the effect 3D had on the industry, and 3D has been around longer than you might think. The Dreamcast is the perfect cut off point because it's the last low poly system released. If you want to give the PS2 a place in retro gaming history by the logic you've presented, then there's no reason that the Wii or Wii U shouldn't be considered retro either.

7th gen an onward should be its own thing. It was a drastic shift away from games being "games" and the main rise of "games competition with Hollywood" trends, plus online integration becomes an integral part of the experience. Yea it had starts before that, but 7th is where it became common trends as well as indie devs filling the niche of "old retro/jap" releases.

Preferably though, each decade should have its own board with specifications of what platform belongs in each.

One big issue I had with the game that I don't hear get brought up often is the new attacks you learn. For example, there was a boss in the Ninja chapter who was kicking my ass hard. I couldn't figure out why this particular boss was so damn strong compared to everything else I was fighting. I was barely scratching the thing for some reason. Finally, I ended up looking up a guide to see if I was doing something wrong. It turns out the problem is that I was only at level 15, but at level 16 Oboro-maru learns an EXTREMELY powerful attack that the game expects you to have when you're fighting that boss, so you wind up extremely underpowered if you're even one level below it. That happened multiple times throughout the game. So whenever I ran into a hard boss, I was never sure if it was hard because I was fighting it wrong or if I just hadn't hit the target level to learn the next move yet.

That's a big thing I hope the remake fixes.

Wierd design decisions that felt less intentional and more a product of time/money constraints. Like having to go up and down Buriki Daioh's stairs so often, the fact that the conclusion is kinda rushed considering the slow pace it had before, the puzzle-like encounters getting old really fast and how you can't really avoid them because they don't disappear from the map if you run, and that there's 3 villains but only one has any real story prominence.
