My favourite Japan-only console is WonderSwan.

Which games do you like for it?

I have:
Go Raku Ou Tango
Bistro Recipe
Medarot: Perfect Edition

>> No.860085

Easily the Sharp X68000. I've lusted over that thing for most of my adult life.

I think I prefer the first Master System. But those side mount controllers - man, something about them.

Mine is wonderswan too
I have digimon and some robot game.
Any recommendations for other games?

Also, the game gear console some guy in Japan made. Which, while not really what was meant by 'Japan-only console', I'd probably be willing to fork out £200 for. If not just to get around bleeding caps and dying LCD screens.

>> No.860791

PC Engine. Fuck the Turbo Grafx-16. The majority of it's games are way over-priced for shitty ports of superior Japanese games.

It is still the smallest home console in history. The Genesis 3 and Canada-only Wii mini are the only ones that come close, but they're still slightly bigger than the PC Engine.

The TG-16 is twice the size. Literally, for the same amount of space I could have everything the TG-16 had just stock without the AV Booster +, and still get the benefits of the AVB+ (after a composite mod to the Tennekoe 2).

I can literally think of a handful cases where it was better to have the TG-16: the Bonk series, Silent Debuggers and both Neutopias. Most PCE games are in English. Not like it matters anyway, the systems were mostly shitty shooter clones.

Not a console.

PC-FX. And for my favorite game, Machi.

what are you talking about? it's actually one of the few consoles where most games aren't changed at all for the US versions
and when they are it's usually just a sprite here and there

didn't they change it slightly though when they turned it into the master system and not all master system games are backwards compatible

>I think computers that were used mostly for games should count

The X68000 wasn't meant to be used just for games, it was a high end computer (Capcom used them to develop their CPS-1 games). It had games, yes... but those things were really expensive as gaming plattforms, it was ten times more expensive than any console back then.

>> No.860857

>>860838
Speaking if the MSX, is there a guide some where to what games need what add on carts? It would make emulating it so much easier. Also, the MSX systems were also released in europe if memory serves me correctly.

Not all of them, some models were only released in Japan.

yet it was, and also neither was the amiga

so was the amiga
>yes... but those things were really expensive as gaming plattforms, it was ten times more expensive than any console back then.

yes, and so was the amiga, yet people in the gaming community regard it as mostly a gaming platform, I fail to see your points.

>> No.860952

Well... the FM Towns Marty is an actual console, so that one should count. The PC-98 is another computer, and unlike SHARP, NEC and Fujitsu actually entered the console market.

>> No.860957

The Marty can still function as a normal FM Towns much like the Amiga CD32 is a functional Amiga computer.

so any console that can function as a computer makes it not a console then? Since, in japan at least, most consoles had adon/carts that allowed them to function as if they were computers that rules out about any japanese console then.

>>861074
Except for the Wonderswan.

>> No.861101

>>861090
oh yes, that's it then, Wonderswan is the only true japanese gaming console, everything else is a computer and can not be talked about in this thread

>> No.861105

The difference is that the computers came first. An Atari VCS with a BASIC cartridge is still a console but an Atari XE disguised as a console is still a computer.

FM Towns Marty
Partly because of the fucking ridiculous name that puts it up there with Isuzu Mysterious Utility Wizard in the pantheon of wacky Japanese product names, and partly because it sounds like a Genesis that grew a pair.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CLT5tbtnKyE
I can only imagine what Thunder Force 4 or Streets of Rage 2 would sound like on it.

One of these days I'll buy one. Seems a lot more solid a purchase than most other Japanese-exclusive consoles, what with all those shmups and arcade ports.
