Alexia's first form is also pretty much Parasite Eve, right down to the fire powers and opera music playing in the mansion foyer fight.
It's weird because 1-3 mostly pulled their ideas from stuff like Romero movies and old monster schlock. On the other hand, CV is this funky time capsule of Y2K pop culture. The only thing it's missing is a Smash Mouth song over the end credits.

I had this for PS2. I tried to play it once for a couple hours and found it to be a pretty abysmal experience. I was never inspired to try it again, and it's solely responsible for me never wanting to play a Resident Evil game prior to RE4 (sadly, the ones after RE4 suck for other reasons).
Luckily, Silent Hill existed to scratch my tank control survival horror itch. I might be missing out, but there's a lot of games out there to play, and I'm just saying all this to indicate the impact a single game can have on the perception of an entire series (if this was even a bad entry, I certainly have no idea).

Most of the Resident Evil 2 dev team worked on Code Veronica. The game engine was outsourced to the same port team that did Resident Evil 1 for the Saturn. But the actual game was designed internally by Capcom.

It's funny how nobody in 2000 even blinked an eye at the "transphobic" stuff in Code Veronica. The game isn't even 'transphobic' beyond that one line of dialogue uttered by Claire. The main villain wasn't even really trans, as he had multiple personality disorders and would jump between two distinct personalities. One being Alexis. The plot to Code Veronica reads like a summer blockbuster movie list from 1997 to 1999. Clearly Alfred was inspired by Norman Bates from the 1998 remake of Psycho. Which was generally panned for being a remake of Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho from 1960, but worse. It was slammed as being a pointless remake by critics.

I should have said, maybe just the 'core members'? Though now that I think about it, most of the RE2 team went on to make RE0, did they not? Even Hideki Kamiyai was incharge of the N64 version before it moved to the GameCube. Resident Evil Code Veronica did start development as a port of RE2 to the Saturn. The port team was handled by one of Sega's 'tech teams' called NextTech (or whatever). Capcom made a statement saying that they were sorry about the Saturn game, and moved all their Sega related development to NAOMI and Dreamcast, and offered a new RE game to Sega. NextTECH did the game engine, it literally plays like RE2 with 3D environments. NextTECH may have been in-charge of the game design too. But I always thought this game's core team was made up of RE2 devs. Capcom hyped this one as being the first 'next gen' RE game, but never treated it like it was a mainline game. But I heard the devs treated the game like it was the real RE3, since the plot takes very shortly after RE2 with Claire.

They throw lots of things at you in the first few minutes. Within the first 10 minutes of the game, you'll fight a ton of zombies, dogs, and even giant worm/snake things.

There's a level of openness to the start of the first game that feels more open-worldy and lets you decide which of these areas to tackle and in which order.
If you don't know where to go, you will end up fighting a ton of monsters before you even get the handgun.

AQnd this game is a bit like a Sonic CD situation. Where the devs of Sonic Cd treated that like the real Sonic 2, even though the game would have never been released as a mainline game. This one, the devs treated Code Veronica like it was their version of RE3. The Alfred and Alexia stuff as kids, was connecting a lot of main story points to them in a weird way. The game would have never been called RE3 though. The game takes place 4 months after RE3. Though RE3 take place in parallel with RE2.
