cant say it is THE best i've played, that is too hard of a question to answer but it is the first game that springs to mind. it is the only game as well as i can remember that actually made me feel sad.

I'm going to say Skies of Arcadia, OP.

There used to be a lot of great games but I think the fact that they were long ago and I was different ages at different times makes it hard for me to objectively conpare different generations of Retro.

Dark Souls is really good, though. I know that for a fact.

Castlevania SOTN is pretty close. Skies of Arcadia is also up there. Probably a tie between those 2 and Jet Grind Radio

Street Fighter II: The World Warrior

There is nothing more I want out of a game. Every aspect is nailed perfectly and the game is brilliantly well thought out and designed.

3/4 of the way through I got a little depressed because I didn't want the game to ever end.

I can still play it any day, any time. I can spend a couple of hours just running through the levels. I'm not a speedrunner or anything like that, it just gives me a satisfying feeling. It's like shaking hands with an old friend. It centers me.

I think I hold it so fondly because it was the first cooperative FPS I had ever played, and it was the only game that I ever ended up playing with everyone I played games with. Until Halo came out basically.

Beyond any shadow of a doubt SotN is the best game I've ever played, and gets my vote for the best game ever made. I fucking love it. I know some will say it's easy or whatever but the first time I played It I was floored. It is a phenomenal achievement in video game development.

Other than that I would say MGS2.

I judge my best games as games that gave me a permagrin as I was playing. Final Fantasy III (VI), SOTN, Policenauts, and YS IV (PC Engine CD) are some good examples.

Retro: Oddworld Abe's Oddysee. Really fun and amazing side-scrolling stealth game.
Non-retro: Serious Sam. A great callback to the old school fps' of yor

Does anyone ever feel like they've played all of the good games already?

I should stop visiting /vr/ hearing all the names of these games makes me well up with tears.

Thinking about the first times I played all these awesome games and remembering how great they were.

Then realising you'll never have the same feels as when you explored Hyrule for the first time as Link, heard the soundtrack to Chrono Trigger, beat Mega Man II, or cried with laughter after trapping your stoned best mate with a bomb in Bomber Man on the SNES!

When did gaming loose it's soul?

When will I get those feels with a modern game?

Hell no. You must be new to /vr/. I browse here and I realize that even if have I played maybe averaging 4 hours every day for 25 years, I have dozens of near-perfect games that I yet haven't even heard of. Hell, there are whole platforms I haven't started to explore yet, and countless amount of new stuff (yes, even good games) is being made as we speak.

Lately I'm more depressed that I don't have the time to even graze the tip of the iceberg.

While I had my share of fun with it as a teen, I find it to be pretty boring
For being such a combat-centric game the combat is pretty damn bad, it's either backpedal+smack enemy or nuke him in a few spellshots. Exploring can be fun, but the combat gets into the way always SKREE SKREE and there's not much to do in the game except for combat and exploring really. And doing quests, some of which are interesting, but those aren't the majority unfortunately. Very little challenge in the game, my character(s) ended up steamrolling the game at level 20. The atmosphere of the game is... kinda off, and very samey, outside of the Red Mountain. I guess the experience improves with some mods, but the more mods you add the higher risk of mutating it into an unstable non-sequitur clusterfuck.

It's difficult because I play different kinds of games for different reasons.

Best /vr/ game I've played is hands down Cho Ren Sha 68k.

Morrowind is great when you peel back the outer layer, which is why mods help the game so darn much. Still the best game in the series despite its glaring flaws, but that's mostly because the later games managed to fuck up harder, and even make their failures seem deliberate.

I'm a minimalist when it comes to modding so I've been steadily repairing the world of Morrowind, taking care not to add anything that doesn't fit. My current project is adding a little more dialogue to the "nobodies" in Ebonheart.

More like they removed the things that Morrowind actually did well. Like the one thing even I had a soft heart for within TES, spellmaking.

I´m playing it right now. I´m enjoying it and I think it´s extremly beautiful and special. But I think it would have been better with improved combat...fighting off the Shadows can get extremly annoying and tedious, espacially if you don´t have the sword equipped.

Doom 1 or CS 1.6, dunno which thought.

I absolutely loved it... but it would have blown my brain apart if I played it when I was a kid (I was pretty anti-playstation at that age).

Morrowind is my favorite game of all time (having logged 5,000+ hours in it), and imho the appeal comes not from the game game, but from the atmosphere, setting, story, world, and roleplaying potential. With Necessities of Morrowind (or w/o I suppose) there's virtually no end of the character or character archetypes you can roleplay and have a unique experience with every time. The only real constant between playthroughs is very low level faction quests (and even then only some factions) and

Homeworld 1, Total Annihilation (with mods unfortunatly) or Star Control 2. There are at least 40 other contenders, but they aren't perfect at all to consider them the best game I have ever played.

These games are immaculate pieces of art for the Patrician class. Any other game might aswell be full of shit if placed between these three.
