Who bought games like this?

I remember seeing reviews and rankings in gaming mags back in the day and I'm like "who the fuck is spending 60 quid on THIS? I got one new game a year if I was lucky, I made damn sure it was something I knew I'd like. How does this shit get localised? I can't believe it makes any money.

Who the fuck bought this or why this exists but am so glad it does. Basically Gaelco never had a chance competing with Acclaim monopoly in US Arcades so this was their first and only exposure to many people.

My rich childhood friend who was 20 years younger than his older brothers and practically grew up as an only child bought this kind of stuff. His dad would buy him a new video game nearly every Saturday, no joke. I'm pretty sure that he chose this game one Saturday because he knew his weeb friend (me) would get a kick out of it.

you could only sell innovative or unique games on PlayStation. Releasing these games on Nintendo is asking them to suck and die.

>> No.8603068

Damn, I remember seeing this game go for $20 in 2006 at an EB Games. I'm pretty sure they went on sale because nobody bought them.

I did. The clearance bins used to have treasures. The game was interestingly different and that's what got my attention on it along with a review I remember from X-play of the day: https://youtu.be/TDMtAs5TUwM

Niche markets. I like to think Katamari doing as well as it did sort of opened the door for publishers to just say fuck it and start localising some crazy shit. Keep in mind that a lot of these weird games didn’t even get big print runs. It’s not like they were expecting to shift a million copies, no. These games typically got at most 20,000-ish printed and that was that. A load of Atlus games for the PS1 got extremely low print runs because lets be honest, who the fuck is going to be buy Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure? Hardcore motherfuckers who like this shit, and you can bet that they sold out that print run purely because of the hardcore market

>Who bought games like this?
The same kind of people who bought Seaman I would imagine.
Odama was great as a game though if frustratingly difficult at times.

Pinball

I bought this game few years ago and let me tell you, Odama sucks and shouldn't had been released outside of Japan because voice commands from that era don't translate very well to the gameplay.

>> No.8606715

Me. I bought it. I've always loved weird ass games. I don't know how someone could be in this hobby for decades and not branch out into weird shit every now and then.

>> No.8606764

I too like to try and play weirder games when possible. But I don't get people who try to pass off Odama as a good game. It's really pinball since theres no obstacles to bounce off of. You need a mic to order soldiers out and you just flip the ball at enemies and the walls. It's massively boring. Rock of Ages isn't quite the same thing but it will scratch the same itch and much better

I hope more niche and non-standard games get made and localized just to spite boring retards like you.

No one is complaining about weird shit getting localised.

We're just amazed it does because what kid in their right mind would ever buy Odama when on the same shelf there's: FFX, MGS3, Resident Evil 4, Wind Waker, Super Mario Sunshine, Mario Kart Double Dash, GTA Vice City etc.

That's Pinball. It is one of the few games that play on the PSP in a vertical orientation.
