8574017 No.8574017 [Reply] [Original]

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related. Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first

Those aren't actually the same type of mask. Unless you mean a real arcade monitor which would be worse because of the hours it would likely have on it. A nice thing about consumer TVs is they're generally on the lower end of usage time.

HDMI to VGA doesn't work, it has to be DP to VGA.
Technically you can get a 15kHz signal out of many HDMI adapters, but it doesn't work well, it can't drop low enough or has a mangled picture.

If you already have native VGA out, you can try using that, either the same way as you would with a DP adapter or using 15kHz drivers or mods. Try and see, be careful not to blast 31kHz+ into the monitor though.

I did get a cheap 10m/32ft VGA cable a few days ago, but it could only go up to 1024x768 on my monitor, no idea if it'll handle the meme resolution and I don't have the component box yet to try it.

You can of course try. That's just my experience. As far as I know, HDMI doesn't have the same amount of control and bandwight window for it to work though, at least properly.

Try CRU and create a custom 240p/60 15kHz mode. What GPU anyways?

>It's a 2006 Trinitron TV. Aren't there safeguards against out of range signals in late CRTs anyway?
Should, but I can't promise. If anything is iffy, just unplug or turn off quickly and just in case, always make sure the driver is reporting a signal that should be near 15kHz before trying. Just good practice in general, otherwise you might get used to it even when your current CRT has safeguards for it, but you might use another CRT sometime in the future that doesn't.

Has anyone picked up or bought a CRT that was cleaned beforehand? I understand if you're hauling away a CRT that the owner perceives to be worth very little, or worthless, they probably wouldn't care about cleaning it beforehand, but from the two times I've bought PVMs from people who were aware of their value, they didn't bother to give the case a quick wipe down.

Both of these are being sold near me. Looks like they're the exact same model and are roughly the same price. I own a 27" WEGA and, using that as a point of comparison, these are definitely bigger than 27", most likely 32". They have the text "Trinitron" on the upper left side of the screen instead of "WEGA", I don't know what that means though. What do you think? Both also include the forniture they're standing on, which is a nice little gesture even if they both look like they're been through the wringer.

>>8582495
The only ways you would really be able to tell for sure if the tv was heavily used would be if it has any burn it (obvious while it's off) or if the screen is particularly dim while powered on. If the owner will let you test it with something hooked up like a tv signal, you could see if there are any geometry or blooming issues caused by aging components, but geometry problems like that are more likely to be caused by aged rather than heavy use.

That said though CRTs can handle quite a lot of abuse, so if it's turns on at all and doesn't have any immediate visible issues (like wavy picture or really bad picture warping) it's probably fine.

Personally I think 20 inches is pretty much the sweet spot for being good for couch gaming without being too big. As the other anon says component hook ups are ideal but unfortunately rare in common sets, but so long as it at least has a composite in you're good. Coax only isn't really worth it.

did anyone have any success building a VGA to SCART cable and use the Delock 62967 DP to VGA adapter to hook up an RGB capable TV to a pc?
im in the process of building one and while i was able to solder all the connections on the VGA end with no shorts im already facing the problem that i cant fit the plug into its housing anymore. reason for that is probably the choice of cables. the guide at
[ geocities dot ws/podernixie/htpc/cables-en.html ]
says to use 75 ohm cables and talks about inner and outer conductors. its obvious the guide talks about coaxial cables but they are incredibly difficult to work with. the standard sized ones are obviously not an option because they are way to big. im using a 2.5mm diameter mini coaxial cable and its a chore to work with.
im considering just buying a prebuilt cable if i just were to find someone selling one.

>> No.8586604

>>8586543
HD CRTs lag because of the scaling they have to do since they need to accept everything but aren't multisync capable so must scale everything to 1080i/540p. Since 540p is non-standard you're always going to get some lag because you're always feeding the TV 240p, 480p, or whatever. But if you happen to be able to use an external scaler to feed it native 540p then the TV does no scaling and the only lag you'll get is from the external scaler itself which if its any good at its job will be imperceptibly small. Though HD CRTs also tend to have digital post processing but you can turn this off in the service menu.

"540p has the same video timings as 1080i, so if it can accept 1080i, it will likely also accept 540p. This is really 448p in a 540p raster with every other line blacked out to yield what looks identical to 224p. There would normally be black bars on the top and bottom of the screen, but I have the raster expanded"

"The native 224p image from the SNES is line-doubled, then placed in a 540p raster where every other line is blacked out. There are really black horizontal bars at the top and bottom of the screen (540-448=92 rows) but the vertical scale is set so they're off-screen"

There's really no perfect solution for PS2/GCN/Xbox. You just have to pick which games you value the most and want to maximize and settle for imperfect solutions for everything else. There are too many good 480p games on PS2 to not use an HDTV I think. And by then there wasn't as much issue with lag because developers started taking it into account so games started getting a shit load more forgiving. There's a reason people bitch over that generation not being retro enough. It really was the start of "modern" gaming from many angles.

It's stupidly expensive. You could buy a sizable good quality modern TV for that amount. As for the PS2, some (but not all) component capable TVs are 480p capable. 480p is not an absolute requirement for a PS2, but it's certainly nice to have. Aim for component, hope for both

>> No.8591339

>>8591284
Yes I would recommend an hd widescreen set for ps2, as it will accept both 480i and 480p. A monitor will not accept 480i. You can force a modded ps2 to always output 480p but it doesn’t work well for many games.
A big reason we use CRTs for old games is because they display 240p natively, as 240p doesn’t go through normal scalers well. Since the ps2 is predominantly 480i/p, I think it looks perfectly fine from scaling. You could get a decent scaler and hook the ps2 up to a vga monitor at higher resolution (say, 1080p) or even a modern tv it can look good after scaling. The benefit of the hd crt is it will do the scaling for you

This meme of "smaller=sharper" needs to stop, provided full context is given. A 30" 480i CRT viewed 30 inches away will be just as sharp as a 20" 480i CRT viewed 20 inches away.
This is also assuming their TVLs are the same and dot pitches relative to their screen size (0.30 and 0.20, respectively), but the 30" has a bit more leeway to have a finer pitch due to its size, theoretically making it "sharper".

I still have my Fapper desk, it holds my Power Mac 6100, Sun Ultra 1 and the latter’s massive 21” monitor. Thing is solid as a rock. Even the Galant desk is pretty sturdy. But recently the desks have been so fucking light and flimsy it’s not even worthwhile looking at them.

I've got the PS1 RGB SCART PACKAPUNCH sync on luma cable from RetroGamingCables.
Works on both PS1 and PS2 but they say "our PS1 cables have capacitors inside the SCART plug and our PS2 cables does not. This is to ensure maximum electrical compatibility for each console".
It appears to work fine on my PS2 but does it really make any actual difference if I did use this PS1 cable on a PS2? Like any timing difference or anything like that which I might not be observing. Happy to buy a PS2 one if so but I'm curious. Cheers!

i have one of those cheap portable 5" b&w tv's from the 2000's. it seems like it automatically adjusts the brightness depending on how bright the overall picture is. like it will get darker if there's a lot of light color and lighter if there's a lot of dark. i could be mistaken. but iirc that behavior was also found in early tv's before like the 80's and so i'm wondering: does anyone else have a similar model of portable tv that can verify this phenomenon? and does anyone know what it's called and how it was fixed?

It can be little hard to figure out how to get it running, but lucky for you, I figured it out for you. Here's the setup I've used, guaranteed to work:
WinDAS and DosDAS, patched and all https://files.catbox.moe/6eze81.rar
I used 64bit Windows 7 with this fix https://yewtu.be/watch?v=FR7apz7uWZ4
Used the red adapter from here https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000120687489.html

Do you have a GDM-F520 (or similiar)? Because this issue is quite common with GDM-F520's. The issue is stale contacts between the mother- and video boards, and possibly the neck board connector as well. So nothing to do with WinDAS.
Here's a cool party trick; apply pressure to the back of the monitor somewhere around the inputs. The ghosting may reduce.
Disassemble the monitor and reseat the video board. If it doesn't work, clean the contacts with some contact cleaner. Bend the pins a tiny bit.
This has always fixed it for me, though my case is very persistent, it always comes back in mere weeks.
I'm working on a permanent hardware mod to fix this problem permanently. I'll report about it once I actually get around to doing it

Thank you for the info. As for my monitor, it's "the one", pic from before was just the first thing I found online (but I'd like to get an F520 sometime in the future). Been wanting to restore it for awhile, but always push the project back, scared that I might fuck up somewhere along the way. It's not perfect, weird red flashes on initial boot and scuff on the anti-glare coating (will probably take it off before calibrating), but otherwise runs fine.

If so, I think I'll finally have a go at it sometime next week, and use your links and suggestions for reference. One last thing, I see guides suggest using 2 computers (one for running WinDAS, another for using a colorimeter), but is that *necessary* or can I theoretically do it all with one?

Not necessary, it's just that you end up doing that anway since you need to run old operating systems on a throwaway machine for WinDAS.

I use this little fella. Of course it's finicky because it's chink manufacturing, but to be fair it still works to this very day and it's been a while since I bought it. It has physical buttons to fit the screen to your liking (kind of like moving around your CRT monitor display area). Came adjusted to PAL, so I had to navigate the menu (you can kinda see the menu even thought it jumps around vertically) and move the option to NTSC-U for it to work (since there's no physical switch for NTSC/PAL selection). Outputs to both composite and s-video, the latter looks insanely good on my Trinitron. Whenever I'm not using my OLED, I use this little guy to watch old anime the way God intended.
Never dabbled too much into component converters since component can do resolutions that a standard TV can't take (480p, 720p, 1080i) and I would rather not waste money on something that won't work. Save me the headache. Besides if you have s-video you won't miss component, specially not when your intent is to watch video instead of playing games. Though you could also use it to emulate PS2 and GameCube, and it looks exactly the same as the consoles would.
I'm rambling, but yeah it's good. Also bought an extra long VGA cable so I don't have to reposition my PC. I'm sure you can buy both on ebay, mercadolibre or whatever you use. Pretty sure it all comes from China, so AliExpress is a no-brainer, I would rather buy locally though if the price is right.
Forgot to mention, mine included de composite, s-video and VGA cables so you don't have to worry about that, yes they're shitty but it's not like you're going to tell the difference on an SD TV. Bad shielded analog cables are only noticeable on CRT monitors to me at least.

I’m not the Sony guy whoever that is but a tube is worn out if you need to crank the g2 way up (like 170+) while calibrating it in order to get the right brightness. It’s hard to tell if a tube is worn out without calibrating it, but it’s mostly about how bright it can get at certain voltage levels: if you have to crank all the brightness settings in order to see anything, your tube’s worn out. Is there a complete guide in how to hookup a linux PC to a consumer CRT and get it to display 480i (240p with groovy mame)? And how expensive and difficult could it be? I can get a VGA capable PC no problem, do I need to get a expensive VGA to component adapter just like I'd have to if I wanted to convert HDMI to component? Also, is there anything similar to goovymame for retroarch? (or for console emulators for that matter).

Weird sounding question but
I'm using a VGA CRT at 480p scanlined, are there any other shaders/presets (notably Retroarch ones) that I can use to create a more authentic image? Like glow or NTSC artifact effects for example -- really anything that makes it look more like an RGB consumer set. And since I'm running at 480p, should I upscale the image with nearest neighbor or sharp bilinear?
Been using CRT Royale until now, which looks great but has been pretty limited with my 1080p monitor

What the absolute fuck are you talking about? Ebay and Craigslist are stuffed to the gills with CRT TVs. Also they won't break during shipping. CRTs are fucking tanks. You can even get decent shipping on a smaller TV if you look hard enough. Pro tip: 9" VCR or DVD player combo TVs are plentiful and on the cheaper end of the spectrum.

Go back on Facebook marketplace and search through the free stuff section, no search terms. People list old tvs under many names, so it’s easy to find old people trying to junk their old heavy tv they can’t lift anymore by putting it up for free. Also put up an ad yourself on Facebook and/or Craigslist saying “I want your old heavy tv/old tv removal service free!” If you’re desperate that’s like a sure fire method but you will probably get more than you need, and you’ll need muscles and help to carry out the behemoths

>> No.8605392

Got a CRT adjacent question. I tired to play Chaos Break PAL via my X Station on my NTSC PS1 hooked up to my NTSC consumer CRT. It does not have a built in 50/60 selector so I just never get sync. I downloaded a trainer patch from consolecopyworld and I use that that to select 60hz. I get into game but it's like 1/3 of the way off screen. So far down it can't be fixed by the service menu.

Is thier a better way to get PAL PS1 games to play nice on NTSC sets? I know The Japanese is mostly in english but the items and non voice acted dialog is not and that makes it really hard to play.

I’m facing the hard decision of whether or not to sell off my CRT. It’s nothing special, a consumer Trinitron. It’s a flatpanel with some geometry issues that I haven’t been able to fix, causing a visible ripple during scrolling, so I could do better.
I do love the CRT but it takes up space I could better use for other things, and CRT shaders on emulation have undeniably gotten better in the last few years, I can’t even say I totally prefer the CRT when comparing the two side by side.

What should I do? Anyone else made this decision?
