Welcome to The Garage, a thread where fans of racing vidya can discuss their favourite arcade, sim, kart, and any other kinds of racing games (this is /vr/, so any PC/6th gen game up to 2007 goes!). If you’re looking for something new to play or are new to the genre ask other Anons for recommendations and remember to gear up and have fun.

>New here? Interested in a series to get started with? Check out these!
Burnout
Daytona
Dirt/Colin McRae
F-Zero
Forza
Gran Turismo
Mario Kart
Midnight Club
Midtown Madness
Need for Speed
Outrun
Project Gotham Racing/Metropolis Street Racer

Remember to bump, /vr/ has been faster as of late and threads get archived much quicker now. Don't be shy: ask questions, share experiences! If anyone has ideas for community events, speak up!

Thread challenge, set by Devil Z:
>What game?
Gran Turismo 3.
>Which mode?

I've been playing outrun on pc engine today. It plays great but the real draw is the chiptune versions of the songs. The only drawback is during the stage changes, the road glitches, but it doesn't really detract from the game.
Also, does anyone have the burnout iso in a mega? I'd like to clock a time, but the regular download spots have it as a 10 hour ordeal.

Willing to sell me on GT 2002? I own the JSRF/GT2002 combo pack but I never could get into the racing in GT 2002 because of how the handling feels.

>> No.8568704

>>8568691
I mean i'm very new to racing games still, have only ever tried newer sims, and only familiar with meme games like daytona and initial D. But i got used to the handling very quickly when i realized this was japan's genuine attempt at honest racing sim in their own way, a lot of the game's handling is tied to your customization of the car. Customize it right and you'll handle just fine, even for someone like me who literally just last night learned how to properly turn like someone who isn't brain damaged and not ram into walls at every turn, It handles fine enough. I tried forza horizon 5 today and while it's fun, i felt i couldn't expect to gain any experience at racing sim games continuing to play it and legit went back to sega gt (and midtown madness 3 lol) enjoying that FAR more.
Honestly a lot of my preference for the game especially comes from my rekindled love for the pre-2006 console eras. The feel of the rumbling, fat bitch xbox controller in my hands and the early 2000s 3d is so charming and a very comfy experience. I'd love to keep playing over my save by emulating but the fucking emus still don't quite have the game down.

GT1 is more arcadey and easy JDM drifting simulator. Try it if you're into this kind of games (Battle Gear, Tokyo Xtreme etc) or if you're a JDM fan. If not, just skip straight to GT2. Japanese version of GT1 is the proper one, western versions seem to have an indentity crisis because Sony marketed them towards regular gamers who have no clue about JDM scene.
GT2 is the first proper GT game with hundreds of cars, both japanese and western, more realistic controls and physics. Like it embodies what Gran Turismo series is about, except for online races of modern installments. Monumental game for its time but is outdone by GT4 and GT6 in this category.

The most notable difference on real hardware is that GT2's framerate goes way lower way more often than GT1 does.
And while there are *some* differnces in terms of handling, I find the aesthetics to be far more different, and atmosphere too.

I dislike 2's slanted HUD. I dislike how 2 doesn't have cool little music bits for every manufacturer and submenu. I dislike the soundtrack of 2, most of the songs are too slow in tempo for racing games and I find them all to be a massive downgrade compared to GT1's OST.

I personally like GT1 more than 2 and if I want to get some retro GT nostalgia, I'll go to 1. But if you feel like locking yourself up and spending an actual few hours in a marathon, GT2 is better. 1 has fairly little content, you grind the same cups and retry the same bullshit difficult events. Whereas 2 has a lot slicker progression system, a lot of single-race events that give car prizes. You stack up the garage a lot faster and that makes for a more rewarding experience. You will never get stuck on a single race/cup, if you cant win or dont have a good enough car for something, there are always immediate alternatives.

Pretty sure the Xbox versions of Outrun 2/2006 support proper force feedback, as it was one of the goals of the developer of the Outrun FXT mods for the PC release of OutRun 2006 to add that back (since for some reason the PC version didn't ship with any rumble support at all).

That said, maybe I'm wrong about that. If so, I'd still like to know what is a good high quality wheel for original xbox.

I never could get to grips with GT handling because cars just snap into a slide when you steer and brake at the same time, usually causing you to approach corners far more aggressively than expected and usually causing you to overcorrect the slide. How does a racing game's soundtrack affect its gameplay? You're talking nonsense.

>> No.8597560

in fairness to cee(even though he is retarded), any of the burnout soundtracks after 2 are fucking awful and dont fit in a racing game but i guess this is an arcade racer with unlicensed cars so i guess the audience is slightly bigger than just autistic car enthusiasts so maybe you would have some retarded emo faggots in 2004 playing this shit

EA owning Criterion would have given them the finance to use licensed songs, unlike the first two games where Acclaim were publishers and didn't have the same clout as EA.

I've nothing against people saying B3's soundtrack is bad, but to say it's so bad it directly affects the game itself is the issue here, because that makes zero sense in the slightest. If it upsets someone to that extent, they should really turn the music off.

>> No.8597759

fair, though i never saw this really documented anywhere but why is it that only in burnout 3 and revenge(and maybe paradise) ea trax cant turn off some songs, as in there is no OFF option for some songs, im guessing licensing reasons and record labels but whatever, and i only kept the music on in burnout 3 in specific just to hear stryker

That isn't the gameplay though, this is what I don't understand about your argument. The soundtrack adds flavour. It should not be a core ingredient of enjoying the game.

Every time Burnout 3 gets mentioned on this board you have a complete meltdown over it. It's stupid to constantly seethe over it like you do.

Well awful cover aside this game is actually pretty decent

It's a fairly typical top down vehicular combat racer similar to Death Rally with tournaments, upgrades and bets but the controls feel nice and responsive
However the game gets way harder in last few stages, all the tracks are without boundaries so if you go out of the way it tells you to go back so you are guaranteed to lose, like most gba games there is also no restart button which is very annoying but luckily races are short

However then there is the final race which is just insanely brutally hard, the track is way more confusing and complex and the AI opponent always catches up to you and you have only 3 chances to race him or you do the last tournament all over again
So I just said fuck it and beat him by abusing save states, not proud but there was no other way.
