Playing Final Fantasy on the NES. After 3 days and about 5-6 hours playtime I've just learned that I have to actually go to the weapon and armor screen and equip them to use them. I thought my mages hitting for one damage and fighter hitting for under 10, and having to heal and run back to town after every Ogre encounter, was just that classic Nintendo Hard gameplay.

That's pretty special, OP. Is this your first JRPG?

Oh, so you’re the kind of person who needs the reminders Dragon Quest games give you to equip your weapons and armor.

Aside from Pokemon games, Dragon Warrior Monsters, and Super Mario RPG, yeah. I played a few hours of FFVI like a decade ago. I thought that when the vendor asked me which character I wanted to give the weapon to that he would equip them with it.

To be fair to OP, the way the menu is set up is a little unintuitive since it can actually look like they are equipped given that each character has their own personal equipment slots. You'd have to actually toggle them and see that "E" appear to know you even have to do anything once the equipment is in there.

OP here. I read through the manual before I started playing, and double checking now, it does very clearly state that I have to equip weapons and armor, and includes a screenshot. This one is on me.

Most of the time mage and cleric felt like -2 in the party. In some areas, you could spam AoE to get quick levels but the time I’ve spent doing that I couldve finish the game twice with 4 warriors

Way to crack the code on what 10 year old kids did instinctively 30 years ago. Kind of explains why most modern gaming is just TV 2.0 and completely devoid of any responsibility on the players behalf. Hint: later in the game, when you find enchanted weapons and armor, you can sometimes use them with the ITEM command to cast free spells on your enemies.

It's even funnier that you read the manual beforehand and didn't look at the status screen or whatever the game calls it a single time in nearly six hours. Thanks for sharing and god bless.
