I played a demo of this game that only had japanese voices but I can't remember the name of the demo disc it was on. I've searched a bit for it but I could only find dubbed demos. I'm pretty sure I'm not just imagining this cuz I did find someone else online that also remembered playing a Japanese demo of this game. If anyone knows what disc it was I'd really like to know. Also PS1 demo discs are really fucking cool, especially the Playstation Underground Jampack ones. Very soulful.

It’s hardly a masterpiece, or really all that fun to play, but it’s probably one of the first games I can think of that actively tries to fuck with you, like Takeshi’s Challenge, and the weird humor and gameplay make it pretty fun to play

There's no strategy to the "city building", no penalties at all for building whatever, wherever, you warp into a clunky stiff platformer sometimes and that's the entire game loop.

They literally dump the city building and improve the platforming in 2 for that reason

Ghost Trap was only released in Japan and it was a faux-3D isometric puzzle game with VN elements as you tried to capture ghosts in a haunted house.

Because it's fun. A lot of people first played it when they were kids and didn't need much difficulty yet. Some people play it as adults and are just crappy players so they don't need difficulty either. It has a strong feeling of setting and a great soundtrack. Even people who have long since outgrown such easy games will be able to appreciate its charms (though they won't fully enjoy the game since it's too easy and simple), unless they are aesthetically crippled freaks like you.

Always thought this had a lot of good ideas. It's like a kids version of Flashback.

My friend and I found it at a bargain bin over 25 years ago and it turned out to be the coolest shit ever. The Fillmore theme was about the most epic tune we had ever heard from the SNES. Only ALttP OST really compared.
Also, it was like two games for the price of one.
Sure, the European version allowed you to play just through the platforming sections from the get go. But why would you do that when the game had so much more to offer? The city building is supposed to be like a bonus level, a breather between all the action. The game had everything and it worked.

The second game completely misses the point in my opinion, but I can't blame you for preferring it.

I'm not a retro enthusiast like most of you guys here, just like emulating the games I grew up with, but I believe Midnight Resistance is underrated as fuck, one of the best if not the best Contra clone. My grandpa had an arcade back in the 80's early 90's, somehow the cabinet reached my third world city. It was a bizarre period of a few years where Eidos was taking on smaller studios in Japan to try and keep the company afloat. It wasn't enough and they ended up being bought by SCi which might as well have been a front for Square Enix. There was also a similar game they published from the same developer called Ghost Vibration on the PS2 that was more like an FPS but had the same setting and everything. Both that and Ghost Trap are practically unknown.

Yes, it's a Metroidvania, by the Touhou Luna Nights developers. Guessing they approached the rights holders for permission, and not the other way around. It looks pretty damned solid, but I haven't played it yet.
