It was quite a vibe to get this new and plug it in to the ashtray to play in the car on the way to the beach with your family over the summer

traded in my original PS2 for a PS2 slim too

Silence xstation poorfag. I'll maintain my disc drive usage and have cool wallpapers I make myself with cool music.
>but xstation holds 4,000 games!
You'll never play 3,800 of them in your life. PSIO holds 1,000 and that's plenty.
>but muh ease of use! Just drag and drop!
Common misconception by non-PSIO owners, PSIO IS drag and drop .iso or bin/cues all work just fine. Creating a text file for multi-disc games takes less than 10 seconds.
>but muh compatibility!
The psio is over 99.9% compatible with the ps1 library. Last I checked there were 2 or 3 games that weren't compatible. I don't remember what they are because they're not worth playing. I've never needed to patch a game to play it.

I simply don't care if xstation loads one millisecond faster or supports "memory card pro" (desu I really don't know what that is nor do I own one but I know compatibility with it is coming to PSIO also if it's not already compatible).

The console was popular enough in Japan to warrant companies to realease games for it until 2006 under the label PSONE books and PlayStation The Best, a series of realeases where they put the games in cheap plastic cases with the manual outside of the case, the game would still sell in the 50k units range wich show how popular the Play Station was, also they where a crap ton of anime based game wich where pretty good like One Piece, Inuyasha and Prince of Tennis, not to mention that big hitters like DQVII and DQIV where realeased after both the PSONE and PS2 where out, so technically you could cheat and say that the best selling game of the 6th gen in Japan wasn't DQVIII but DQVII.
Honestly is a shame that we don't see so many great Japanese games on PS like back in the day, Namco and Capcom along with From Soft still realease good games but the input is not nearly as good as it used to be when PS was King, now days is nothing but a shadow of it's former self.

Yeah, it was to encourage game development in the public. They were pretty damn costly though (like $800 or close to that) and they only appealed to hobbyists) but they could also play games of any region. A lot of PSX magazines would include net yaroze games with their demo discs. Most of the games were either tech demos, proof of concepts or really really bad but there’s the odd few that were really quite special and a few devs actually got their start making NY games. This one here is called Terra Incognita which is this weird puzzle/RPG/platformer thing. One of the guys who made it, Mitsuru Kamiyama, went on to join Square and directed one of the FF spin-offs
