So this was the point when Nintendo 64 became the official name for the console. On one hand, I think it's cool that Nintendo finally decided that their consoles only needed one name for the worldwide market instead of the Famicom/NES naming scheme they had before, but on the other hand I kinda preferred the Nintendo Ultra 64 name they almost went with.

This is correct. The PS1 is already on the market with games like Twisted Metal, Jumping Flash, Rayman, Ridge Racer, Tekken, Warhawk, Wipeout, and Resident Evil. The Saturn has Daytona USA, Panzer Dragoon, and Virtua Fighter. The SNES is only about 5 years old in the US, and it's already being shown the door. Not that the good titles are all gone, but 1996 is certainly the end of the SNES. 1997 was the final year, and Frogger only came out in 1998 because the company made the 16-bit version as a part of the Majesco Sega Genesis model 3 release and wanted to maximize their profits. Same company also ported Frogger to the GB, GBC, and GG because they had the license. 1996 for SNES is like 1993 for the NES.

This regional competition concept is a bit silly, but I could see it being fun to participate in for some kids. They've done a decent job of evolving their high scores feature following that fallow period a while back when they'd just post "Finished" for almost every game because scoring systems had become unfashionable. But it's too bad that it's limited to only a few games per month. Maybe if they'd put a little more creativity into it, they could have found some way to open it up more and involve more readers.

Pretty cold there, Nintendo Power! As if players actually paid any attention to the memory size value to begin with. I guess they struggle to find a minus point when they really like a game, though, and apparently you can't use the standard "No Super Game Boy enhancements" criticism in this particular case.

It's interesting how Shadows of the Empire is being the first N64 game truly being featured in the magazine, so far it's been interviews and press events with early beta screens. Either it was that far ahead of development compared to Mario or Nintendo didn't want to put out full feature articles for their own N64 games just yet.
