Is this worth the extra $160 compared to the x3 or whatever? I just want to play knuckles chaotix and sonic cd without hundreds of dollars worth of expensive hardware

>> No.8579750

You'll need an actual 32x in order to play Knuckles Chaotix. The Mega Everdrive Pro can play Sega CD games without the add on, but not 32x games.

What else can it do that makes it worth $160 more?

dude, why are you using original hardware then?
just emulate

seriously just emulate

If your playing on a CRT I recommend it, if your on a lcd just use emulation

You'll still need a 32X for those games. AFAIK none of the FPGA devices can replicate the 32X due tot he weird way it takes video feed from the Genesis and feeds it back into the 32X to mix the layers. If someone did make a device capable of this, I think it'd also need that same patch-through AV cable going in/out of the cart, if that's even still possible.

As for whether the pro is worth it... eh, I guess that really comes down to how badly you want Sega CD support. The way I see it, you're not using original hardware for that purpose anyway, so you might as well just emulate if that's not what you care about. Or you can just buy an actual Sega CD. Not sure what prices for those are like these days though, but they're DRM free so you can play whatever you want with just a stack of CD-Rs

Personally I have an X3. I really don't care about all the other shit

The Mega CD is just a disc reader and some ram

>> No.8580469

It has a second 68000 that’s clocked faster than the Genesis. It has a graphics processor that can do Mode 7-like effects. It has an additional audio processor with 8 channels of PCM playback and 512kb of RAM allocated to PCM samples - again like the SNES, but not muffled.
The Sega CD was woefully underutilized in its lifetime.

The amount of worth playing SegaCD games isnt that big anyway, making the mega everdrive pro a good substitute.

>> No.8580505

From what I remember most games just used the CD to steam music from without taking advantage of the enhance audio chips.

Everything in the MegaCD sole purpose was to translate data from the CD to the mega drive, it didn’t actually draw sprites and the audio setup worked to have better output than the consoles din connectors audio

>>8580506
To add to that the mega everdrive pro at least allows you to do MSU-1 like hacks for games too

Sonic CD used the graphics processor and the PCM audio chip very well. Keio Flying Squadron and Snatcher used the PCM well also.
The Sega CD was meant to fill the gap between the Genesis’s AV capabilities and the SNES, aside from the color limit, but it was mostly never properly utilized.
>>8580505
Yes, most games treated the Sega CD like a Genesis with redbook or a video playback device.

Genesis flashcarst also gives you maser system support since the console is backwards compatible with it.

>> No.8580542

The system has no video out, the most it did was translate a bitmap to be rotated or resized then pushed back into the system to be displayed

I don't know anything about the X3 but I bought the Mega Everdrive Pro. It does Genesis, CD, and Master System games. So for 200 dollars, it's the last thing I'll ever buy for the Genesis, pretty easy to justify the cost.

I can only agree. The everdrive pro is one of the best investments I have done for my mega drive. I was close in buying a mega cd and I'm glad that I didn't.

I mean, are there really THAT many games worth playing on the sega CD/32x that you should spend an additional 160 bucks just to play them on authentic hardware? I didn't think so when I bought mine, so I settled with the 5x. If I really want to play that one Sega CD game that catches my eye one day, I'll probably just emulate it.

There are few things on /vr/ more pathetic and hilarious than the angry little bandwagoner "collector" with a chip on its shoulder. Having emulated in shame until it was able to scrape up enough money to buy a few Mario carts on eBay, it now sees itself as a proud member of the big boys hardware club. The mere mention of the word "emulator" gives it PTSD flashbacks and causes it to fly into a blind rage. Such is the insecurity of this sad little creature that it's doomed to a groundhog day like existence if being triggered, losing it's shit, being mocked by the elders of the club it's so desperate to fit in to, curling up in the floor in the shower telling itself it's all ok because it identifies as "quite the retro game"r, and then starting the whole thing over again.
