I confess that old western rpgs absolutely filter me.
I tried Wizardry 1 a few times, and always had absolutely zero idea how the game was supposed to be played. Always dropped it after less than an hour. The only Wizardry game I beat was the nip nip ps2 game. And I didn't even enjoy it.
Same goes for Ultima. Zero idea what do to or where to go, and the game is insufferably talkative.

I finally kind of managed to run Multipaint (>>8559294) if anyone's interested.

Seems like the .MSD files are saved mouse movements so you can replay a whole paint session by running "mpsdemo.exe filename.msd". If you run the DEMO.BAT on the first disk, it first starts the music player and then plays back two full recorded painting sessions. The only way to start my own paint session was with "mpsdemo.exe -s filename.msd", where the -s flag stands for "Save mouse trace data" (you can see the help message with "mpsdemo.exe -h"). Then I could use Multipaint myself, but every mouse move I make gets recorded to filename.msd for later playback. Don't know if that's how you're supposed to run it though...

i wasn't impressed the first time i saw ultima 6.
my friend played on my pc and he used disk installations instead of hdd installations.
it was a freaking 10 disks or something.
wiki said it's 4 3.5 disks or 5 5.25 disks but i don't know if those are high density or double density disks.
we still use lots of dd disks at that time (early 90s).
everytime he did something, the game asked him to change disks.
he also used cga graphic so it's pink everywhere and i hated it.
a year later, another friend told me about ultima 6 and i loved the open world of ultima.
you can go anywhere you like (not limited like jrpg), do anything like baking breads, playing music instruments, etc.
npcs also have schedule, like sleeping, eating, working, etc.
it's just like real world, and it's a 1991 game.

Yeah, supposedly "Set 1" is what is on the gamingalexandria website.
Some tools/filters, sample artwork and the autodemo mode are supposed to be included. Wonder if that upload is even complete?
On the back of the box it says that you need to have Multipaint installed, but apparently you have found a way around that too, so I don't know what to think now.
Anyway, the orginal Multipaint is in the "utility" zip in the Neo Kobe archive.

I tested the autodemo version again to check the differences. And the main difference seems to be that I can't actually save the images in that version, only load images and record the painting process for playback. So it's only really useful for demoing then I guess and you'd still need the main program to save your images.

Platformers aren't that great on any PC. PC graphics as a whole lacked smooth scrolling as why would a text processor need that? The further you went into the 90s, the better it got until 3D kinda removed the need. Not really something the Japanese improved on though. You'll get stuttery/stiff scrolling or flipscreens and movement isn't fluid in most of them either.
Not to say it wasn't possible, but you needed to employ a few tricks and the people who were capable of that were in short supply worldwide.

Sure, which emulator do you have? I've only tried it with Neko Project 21/W and with DOSBox-X.

In Neko Project you first need to mount the mps.hdi file (from >>8565817) as a harddisk:
>Click "Harddisk" in the top menu bar, go to "IDE #0" and click "Open..." in the drop-down menu. Then you locate and open the mps.hdi file.
And then you need to reset the emulator.

And that's it, it should reboot and start the program.

I've been trying to figure out what the different Multipaint buttons do, it's pretty interesting.

A difference from modern programs is that the Undo command works a little differently. The primary Undo commands are in the toolbar that looks like pic-related, which comes up when you click the Scissor in the main toolbar. The top right button (that looks like a U-curving arrow) is like an Undo button. BUT it doesn't just undo the last thing you did. Instead it restores to a previously saved point, which you can set with the button to the left of Undo (the button that looks like a downward pointing arrow ⤓).

So you save a marker or snapshot or what to call it, with the down-arrow button. And then do the changes you want to do and click the down-arrow button again to save a new snapshot when you're happy with the changes. And if you're not happy with them you click the Undo button and go back to the previously saved snapshot.

Also worth noting is that when you click Undo it saves the image that you're undo-ing as the new snapshot. If you repeatedly click the Undo button it swaps back and forth between the new changes and the old picture. So it's more like a "Swap Snapshot"-button. So it requires a bit more planning compared to modern tools.

I think the UI just uses the leftmost, the rightmost and the two middle colors of the palette. If you change those palette colors you change the UI colors. I'm not sure if that's the only way to change the UI though. The palette has a button, that is currently pressed in the picture here, for swapping place of colors too.

That would be really cool if possible, I don't know if I have the technical know-how to do it though. I'll check the game files and see what I can find.

>> No.8573362

>>8572891
So I checked the game files and it should probably be possible. It looks like all the image files are in some kind of MAG format. Since Rusty was made by C-Lab who also were the ones distributing Multipaint I guess it isn't that surprising, I didn't expect them to just be available on the game disk though. However I couldn't open them directly in Multipaint, maybe they're made with a different version or maybe it's some kind of copy protection I don't know. But I could replace a game mag file file with another and have the other show when I started the game! So maybe it's just a matter of finding which file is the ending image.

Ideally it would be cool if it's possible to get it work like with the MAG image viewer where you can code it to use two images as top and bottom part and scroll from top to bottom starting with just the original image, but that's probably asking too much.

The PC-98 had hardcoded fonts that were stored in the kanji ROM. You can intercept those calls in an emulator and reconstruct the message outside.
Consoles didn't use Kanji ROM aside from the 3DO, games had to bring their own fonts and used their own systems for that purpose. That's also why most FC, MD, PCE and early SFC games can't display kanji since they would have taken significant parts of the storage.

I like this game for the PC98 called Idol Project. It's a bit of an odd one. It's an adventure game where you play as a producer who trains idols. This game came out in 1994 and precedes Idolmaster by 11 years.

It's a bit of a rarity.

It's a fan service game despite releasing on a platform where adult content was common. There's no nudity and because it uses an art style typical of shoujo anime I think it's fair to say that it was drawn by women. However, given the amount of ecchi present and its themes it's clear the intended audience for this game was men.

The mixing of styles is something that's pretty much gone today. Modern ecchi series are now drawn in a more garden variety, mainstream style. Shoujo styled stuff has more emphasis on details and soothing imagery. There's a certain elegant charm to it. It looks pretty but usually isn't people's first choice when producing a product intended to make people horny.

It was popular enough to also spawn an OVA, which came out a year following the game's release. All four of its episodes are viewable on youtube.

I guess the top garter thing is for holding her whip maybe? There's at least one picture where it looks like it might be the whip attached there. But in most pictures it's just nowhere to be seen unless she's holding it, so I don't know.

>Does it use layers?
No layers unfortunately.

>Alternatively I guess one could start the image in Multipaint to acquire the proper color palette and finish it in other other software.
You could also just set the image to 16 color indexed in the other software too. And make sure the red, green and blue value of each color you choose has a hex value like 00, 11, 22, etc.

That said, I like the dithering effects of Multipaint. They're very convenient to use. And the ability to have the brush only paint on top of certain colors and behind others is quite useful. Not just the standard brush, but the other tools as well. Even the copy tool where you select a part and have it cloned in another part of the picture could probably be used to produce effects like pic-related if you first put a scanline pattern over one image with a color you don't use and then clone the other image only on top of that color. It's probably not that hard to do with layers either, but still pretty cool how much is possible with the limitations.

I don't think it's as much the soundchip as it was the people who utilized it to its capacity over its long lifespan along with the advantage of PC hardware. The YM2612 used in the Sega Genesis has all the FM functionality of the YM2203 with twice the channels (it lacks the square wave and noise generator but the Genesis had another chip to make up for it). There's no reason you couldn't get the same sound quality of a YM2203 or even YM2608 on the Genesis with its YM2612.
If you look at early PC88/98 music it had that same harshness as most Genesis music does, even when utilized by competent composers. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9PZRC5cjtw released in 1988 by Yoko Kanno of Cowboy Bebop fame. YM2203 and sounds like any other Sega Genesis soundtrack. But then you have Masahiro Kajihara (aka KAJA) come along with his Professional Music Driver. PMD gets developed over the next few years which greatly enhances what one can do with the chip. This combined with the chip being used for close to a decade let composers iteratively improve the sound their squeezed out of the chip. Compare the 1988 track I posted earlier to this song from YU-NO, released in 1994: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87ZSGqJv8R4 which has none of the harshness that characterized Yamaha's FM chips.
All that being said, I'm sad that soundchips and MIDI went the way of the dinosaur. Access to fully sampled soundtracks has ruined the magic and potential of the more program oriented sound design, and I feel like if it had continued along we would have a much deeper space for videogame sound to thrive in.

kek I know, it was actually fun to practice on though. So I might keep trying to improve it to get better at using the program.

Here's a link to the native PC-98 MAG file with the original image and the added part below, if anyone is interested in trying to patch the game with it.
https://www.mediafire.com/file/buh4l469634lnvh/ED07.MAG/file
It's the ED07.MAG file on disk C (or in the top directory of the hdi, if that is used) that should be replaced. I have no idea if it will work though so I have no guarantees, sorry. I tried replacing images in the intro, just to test it and that seemed to work. But yeah a bit risky playing all the way to the end if it doesn't...

Romaji readings can still be wrong but it helps out if you are a weeb. There isn't really any competition in Yakyuuken Special. It's not even much RNG, the game is simply stacked against you.

It won't come out since the holes are facing the sky and she can only tilt it so much before it spills from the opening. At most it will awkwardly trickle down from the holes at the end with a ridiculously inefficient flow.

Actually, it will come out of the top even if you don't tilt it all that much. That's because it will have enough hydraulic head thanks to both the water's weight and the fact that at both the nuzzle and the can itself the water are at atmospheric pressure.

Of course, I'm neglecting a lot of stuff here but basically the water pushes itself out against gravity.

A bit of both. I found this writeup by the team who did the English fan-translation about the compression used on the files.
https://46okumen.com/2018/11/20/compression-in-rusty-folkulore-part-3/
And it looks like the same compression is used on the images and music files too. And it's quite possible the replacement image doesn't even have to be compressed in the same way.

>I'm sorry the discord guys didn't seem to pay too much attention.
That's ok, I was probably a bit too autistic when asking too. They seemed very knowledgeable though, at least about the hardware side so thanks for the invite link. I thought about asking in the games or artwork channels at a different time, but then I started reading the fan-translation documents and thought I could probably figure it out.

The biggest hurdle is probably that all the ending images are smaller than fullscreen and that the game shifts their positions to be more centered. However, when I tried replacing some of the images in the intro animation that also were smaller and shifted, I could successfully use bigger images. And the cool thing was that the parts outside the screen simply wrapped around to the other side. So maybe it's just a matter of shifting the image in Multipaint up the same amount that the game shifts the image down and wrap in the disappearing top part at the bottom.

It's a big 'maybe' though. I wish I had a save state file or something from the ending animation to try it out, I don't know if I'll be able to beat the whole game just to see the results kek.

So for now this version works!
Here are the mag files that need to be replaced to run it (the ED08.MAG file is expanded with black at the bottom. With the regular ED08 file, you would still see the bottom of Rusty's butt below the succeeding images since it's bigger than the others and still loaded in the background, which could be nice but I thought this was cleaner):
https://www.mediafire.com/file/4gzxk50d53m4bo3/Rusty_mag_files.zip/file

They already have the right names, they just need to replace the existing .mag files on Rusty Disk C, if you want to try it anon.

I'll see if I can make it show from the top of the screen too. There's a big risk it won't be possible though. It seems like all these images show with a hidden border a few pixels wide so you'd probably have to find the code for that and change it which might be difficult and could potentially change the borders in the rest of the game too. I thought about maybe cutting some of the top part too to show more of the bottom but I don't like cutting away parts of the original image.

I'll try to make a patch too if I can, to make it easier to install. Thank you so much again anon. Without you Rusty would still not be able to show her butt in-game!

Variable Geo 1/2 the loser is gang raped.
Toushin Toshi 1/2: rape is an option.
Geo Slave: training female gladiator/slaves, BSDM.
Shaburi hime (or Shaburihime I found both the names) and Shot Diary 2

Then... I don't remember the name of these games, but...
Alicesoft's VN. Victorian England. Young student becomes an orphan and poor. The master of the boarding school makes her work as a maid. She was raped by everyone: the master; the cook; a Indian prince; another maid.

That's a gross misrepresentation of DK2. The monster girls suffer wadrobe malfunctions upon defeat but Takeru never touches them.
In order to cure them you have to find scrolls that allow you to remove the curse.
Afterwards the girls will visit you in the inn to repay you.

Chaos Angels is a better example. After defeating the monster girls in combat and you have enough stamina left you can rape them to gain special powers, some of which are necessary to beat the game.

I made a patch to (hopefully) simplify the installation:
https://www.mediafire.com/file/hu6qpvp8z1o6gy2/Rusty-HDM-GameC.xdelta/file

You'll need to use something like Delta Patcher ( https://www.romhacking.net/utilities/704/ ) and apply the patch to the "Rusty (Game disk C).hdm" of the Floppy version of the game. It should work on the [FD] version from the Neo Kobe archive and even if it's already patched with the English translation too, since the English patch doesn't change Disk C. No guarantees though, so backup the file just to be safe!

The Alicesoft game you are describing is part of Alice no Yakata 3 (哀少女ローラ /Pitiable girl Laura) is a short subgame. The maid "rape" is something she allows to help her only friend out. They seem to make it out, but their would be saviour has the same inclinations and they just suffer more.
Another game on that disc has a delinquent student trio planning to rape their substitute teacher (nearly killing their normal teacher to have her stay for a while).

Man, I'm really warming up to this game. Don't have a lot of play time right now but the character interactions are really good and I like how you can find out stuff about them little by little by going through events randomly.

Maybe I should write down events in a notepad or something. In this run I somehow managed to get really close to two of the girls without even trying, even got a h-scene with one but the one girl I was aiming for I just couldn't find any scenes after a while.

I tried filing a submission with that title. I've never made a romhack entry before, there were a surprising number of requirements and things to fill in. I have no idea if it will be approved kek. It'll probably take a while anyway, the backlog for the submissions seems to be over a week old.

Funny thing about this topic is, in the 1999 Windows version of Doukyuusei, which made a lot of terrible changes to the script, they made it so Satomi never slept with Kenji and is still a virgin when you get to her sex scene, making the whole scene less poignant (like the "goodbye, Kenji...my first..." line in >>8602610 is gone) and on top of that they made it so when you try having sex with her she finds it painful and you just give up and stop.

So they retconned Satomi into virginity for some reason but then released Kakyuusei 2 after that.

Huh, you weren't kidding. That's almost kind of impressive.
After that guy the queue only goes back two days.

Still I was thinking of updating it with patches for the hdi files later too, maybe I should have made them first before submitting. I understand the wait though. Probably difficult enough running a site of that nature, even without user contributions.

>I'd only worry if they don't let it through cuz of being fairly censorious with nudity and other sexually implied things.
I actually crudely censored the image you had to upload. I hope it doesn't have the opposite effect and they see it as not an accurate in-game screenshot. At first when I tried to submit, the site told me my wording in the description was too casual and that I should adhere to the same standards as academic publishing. It was fine with the word "butt" though...

Yeah that, but you usually don't actually punch them. If you talk to him after meeting with Satomi you actually do punch him (though it's played off quick so it's not really meaningful)

If anyone's interested there's a pc-98 command line tool for converting to and from .mag image files available here:
http://www.vector.co.jp/soft/dos/art/se002524.html

It can convert bmp files to mag files and mag files back to bmp files. The bmp files need to be 16 color indexed and 640x400 big. They also need to be v3 bmp files which was the standard back then, i.e. they shouldn't have color space information.

In Gimp you can export an image as bmp and select the "Do not write color space information" option under Compatibility Options to make it a v3 bmp.

Then you run the mg.exe program with:
mg.exe .bmp.mag file.bmp
where .bmp is the format you're converting from and .mag is the format you're converting to and file.bmp should be the name and location of the input file. This creates a mag file with the same name as the input file.

And conversely to convert a mag file to a bmp you run:
mg.exe .mag.bmp file.mag

Could be useful if someone wants to draw a sketch with pen and paper for example and then scan it into the computer. Using this you could then convert the image to a mag file to open it in Multipaint for shading and coloring.

There are. Okama is a broad term that basically translates to ‘faggot’ at worst or ‘homosexual/cross dresser’ at best, though in more recognisable terms it’s usually used as a word for crossdressers. Newhalf is the common word for transsexuals while okama is just some homo who likes to dress like a woman or an effeminate gay man, usually some middle aged geezer which is why in one piece there they’re all fat, balding men. I know in one of the Yakuza games (I want to say 3 or 4) you can find a bunch of crossdressing blokes and they use the term okama there. In the Goemon games, it’s used mainly as a byword for faggot because Goemon and Lala through it around a lot and many of the villains are crossdressers or really really girly gay men. With the NPC in Goemon 3, the character who says “I’m a tranny” is not actually a transsexual but a guy who dresses like a woman. By changing it to newhalf, they’re basically turning the character from a gay dude who likes to dress as a woman to transsexual person which arguably makes the line even worse in some regard if you think about it. Either way, tranny is a perfectly accurate translation of the word and bullying a translator for using it is retarded
