Touhou is great if you're looking in the direction of bullethell, but I'd like a more free roam type shmup that doesn't exist. Something like Asteroids with a massive map and enemies that follow you up to a certain range within a maze or maze like setting with areas where you can upgrade boosters and guns and the like.

Not retro, but the freeware indie game Hero Core might be something of interest. Section Z for NES is maze-like and maybe Air Fortress.
>Something like Asteroids
Fantasy Zone, Bosconian, Sinistar & ZugyA (X68000 & PC) are kinda like that.
Here's the shareware PC version of ZugyA:

The Ahu Akivi are the only moai facing away from the island (looking west), and since you come from the outside, you are coming from the east. So yes, Gradius is an Eastshooter.

>> No.8577071

I havent played everything in the genre or even close. That said galactic attack/rayforce/layer section (all the same game) is my personal favortie. Its just so good and it gets harder as you get better. Its like the developers knew all the tricks and if your scores high enough. the old tricks dont work. You have to get better and use new ones. So its like a loop until your fucking amazing at the game. This makes it extremely replayable.

Radient silvergun is good, but my burned saturn copy has slowdown, especially the explosions after you beat a boss. Is that normal? I like the leveling system and the options of weapons. The chain system and the difficult bosses. Its a thinking mans shmup more than others.

Darius Gaiden is a good time and difficult.

Gradius series are all time classics. #1 on the NES has slowdown.

Xevious, galaga, defender 1 and 2, galaxian, space invaders, demon attack, chopper command, centipede, milipede

Fantasy zone

I couldnt get into In The Hunt on saturn due to slowdown. I’ve heard the psx version is better.

Raptor on dos was pretty fun as a kid but I havent played it for 15 years.

People are likely to just recommend games they think are the pinnacle of the genre, which I think is a mistake. if you suck at the game, you should pick up some titles that are easier to get into. I recommend the Milestone shmups such as radirogy, radirogy noir, and karous because they're relatively easy. Also dodonpachi, if you just play it on normal, isn't too hard and is a good fun introduction to bullet hells. Darius Gaiden and Thunderforce IV are pretty classic games that aren't too difficult.

You don't have to master those games or anything, but once you feel comfortable you can start getting into some of the games that are the peaks of the genre, like Radiant Silvergun, Layer Section, Gleylancer, etc.
