I had this issue. I had a subscription to Nintendo Power Magazine at that point in time. I remember the NU Year cover, referencing the "Nintendo Ultra 64" I think? But inside the Magazine, Nintendo Power reveals the Nintendo 64. Sadly, lost all my NP magazines to a flooded basement, a long time ago.

I think Nintendo should bring Nintendo Power back as a magazine. Yeah, an actual magazine. Just make it subscription only, no news stand. Release maybe 6 a year, and it could be like exclusive cool shit for fans, that you cannot get online. Maybe release them alongside Nintendo Directs?

Also, pretty funny that NP confirms out the gate that Maui Mallard is actually just Donald Duck playing a role, but the game itself erases all mention of Donald and acts like Maui is an all-new character.

I was an impressive port that was released in a particular time frame of the 90's where fighters were all the rave in arcades and home. As years went by it fell off the list.

I got curious about this golf game to which they devoted eight pages - not because of this article, but because of the previous article's Pak Watch, which said it was the first game ever to use the SA-1 coprocessor chip, for some reason. >>8559327 (I don't know whether a link to an archived thread still works?) Well actually it turns out these golf games draw a lot of 3D graphics (usually as still background images, so that a VERY low framerate is acceptable), so you might think the chip would be used for that. But Pak Watch points out that the SA-1 was used to calculate the flight of the ball, not to help render graphics. Apparently that's a big task in some golf engines?

"Now" that we're up to the issue that actually features the game, I've gained a little more clarity from YouTube:

>PGA Tour '96 on the SNES is NOT the same game as PGA Tour '96 on the Genesis. I suppose we should be thankful for that fact because PGA Tour '96 on the Genesis was awful. PGA Tour '96 on the SNES is instead a port of the PGA Tour III, released on the Genesis a year earlier. PGA Tour III on the Genesis was excellent, but unfortunately, nearly everything that made PGA Tour Golf III a success on the Genesis was lost in its translation to the SNES. For example, the hole fly-overs, the pro-player comments and the reverse angle views of the ball in flight have all been removed. One notable element, however, has been added to PGA Tour '96 on the SNES--extremely slow gameplay! Throughout the game, you must endure lengthy waits while the graphics are rendered. On the green, in particular, the hold-ups are agonizing. Apparently, the game makes use of an SA-1 coprocessor, but I can't see what it's contributing. I find it hard to believe that with two processors chugging away, one clocked at 10mHz(!), this was the best that could be done on the SNES. Maybe EA just ported the 68000 source straight over from the Genesis and didn't optimize it for the SNES's 85816? I suppose the game isn't a total loss; the gameplay is all there, there are eight courses, and once rendered, the graphics look pretty good. Nevertheless, it's all but impossible to get beyond the tedious speed of this game.

I looked at PGA Tour III for the Genesis and saw the missing stuff, which does look helpful, as well as the superior speed. So... maybe the SA-1 chip is just there to provide some brute force to compensate for the low quality of a rushed port, or something? And yet in spite of this a bunch of things STILL had to be removed, because the port was so bad? I don't know.

(I don't care about golf games at all. I just found this interesting enough to briefly look into it.)

It seems the presence of bombs in this game has made the normal endless mode of Tetris too easy, and so now that mode is just called Training Mode, and extra obstacles are added to provide challenge in the "real" modes? I guess I need to try this game and find out. I can't even remember whether I ever played any version of it as a kid... I guess it's probably not as elegant as Tetris is, but maybe it's interesting. I think I'm seeing that the Super Famicom version has a puzzle mode, and a puzzle mode in a falling-blocks game like this is generally gonna be decent.
