I like Forbidden Memories too, and the contact fusion system it attempted, even though I find it an extremely flawed gem, I enjoy it for what it is, and I have tons of nostalgia for it aswell. Well, if you've enjoyed it aswell, I'd recommend the following Yu-Gi-Oh! video game adaptations:

1. Duel Monsters (GB)
I believe this is the first time the card game was adapted into a video game, and it's the simplest one, though not too bad, and the rules are close enough to Forbidden Memories, Fusions work almost the same way, without Polymerization, but very few of them work, which can be frustrating, it had no Effects or Tributes, and no Traps either, also Equips and Fields increase ATK and DEF by a lot instead of the standard 500. Simple overall.

2. Duel Monsters 2: Dark Duel Stories (GBC)
I couldn't find a translation for it, so I believe it's only available in JP, but it's the closest to Forbidden Memories, with the hand always going back to 5 cards at the start of a turn, with more Fusions, while still having no Tributes or Effects, it added Traps if I recall correctly, overall the closest one, but you'll need to get used to working around the JP menus and names, or find a translation for it, still, if you manage it could be a fun time.

3. Duel Monsters 3: Tri-Holy God Advent/Dark Duel Stories (GBC)
Finally Yu-Gi-Oh! was localized, alongside Forbidden Memories itself, marking the first time the west got any of these JP titles, it got the title from the 2nd installment in the localization for some reason, but overall it was very different, with rules closer to the OCG/TCG, Effects, Tributes, etc. Overall, while it does feel like the OCG/TCG a lot more than Forbidden Memories, it keeps the Fusions like they are, and it's still simplistic fun.

4. Duel Monsters 7: The Duel City Legend/The Sacred Cards (GBA)
A natural evolution of the previous installment mentioned, however instead of following the simplistic tier system which all of the other titles in this list used, with you defeating all opponents in a tier 5 times and moving on, without much story, here you have a Pokémon like overworld, so story wise it's more like Forbidden Memories, since it actually has one, and it tries to feel like and RPG, just a shame Fusions are gone, but it's still a fun time.

5. True Duel Monsters 2: Succeeded Memories/The Duelists of the Roses (PS2)
Well, I admit this is very different, but it is the literal sequel to True Duel Monsters: Sealed Memories/Forbidden Memories, so it makes sense to include it, the basic rules themselves with Fusions aren't too different, but the rest are, almost all of it, including the field that resembles something like Chess, still, it has the closest feel regarding the story, because it's told like a VN like its predecessor, and it has the same soul to it in a way.

I own several of the older yugioh games and FM is still the best yugioh game created by far. Yes, it’s tedious and difficult in all of the wrong ways, but it still hits that sweet spot of collecting rare cards and pulling off cool moves (thunder dragon fusions). The music being top notch also helped. I still play it every other year or so when I’m feeling masochistic.

the only one I had in my childhood was destiny board traveler but that one sucked hard and was more of a spin-off.

I had Eternal Duelist Soul too but fuck me if the game didn't love to waste your time if you wanted to get all the cards.

Yes I know you can beat Simon to get them all but it still takes fucking forever to get to that date.

you can put in codes to get all the cards, i loved that feature, nostalgia overload of telling my friend codes over the phone

There's something extremely charming about these extremely basic Yugioh games. I have a feeling it's just nostalgia in this case, but on the other hand, there was a weird level of effort put into this game. I mean, there are hundreds of monsters, and each of them has multiple animations. That's impressive for a PS1 game, even one that otherwise has such simple gameplay.

I just wish it was less grindy and luck-based. I'd be fine with them having the player rely on fusions while their opponents have singularly powerful cards, but the best card that the player has access to (Twin-Headed Thunder Dragon) is outpaced by around the mid-game. Either include better drops or let the player access better fusions later on. You really shouldn't have to just hope that you get the right card *and* your opponent doesn't get the wrong card.

Fuck contact fusions. I don't want to have to keep a massive GameFAQs guide up while playing the game. It's fucking retarded.
I've never played Forbidden Memories but I've played loads of Dark Duel Stories and from everything I can tell they're pretty similar games.

It would be if it weren't so easy. The problem with Duelist of The Roses is that the entire game can be cheesed with just one card. FM may be have uneeded levels of tedium, but at least it's difficult while still having some fun.

Yugioh's card rules from the beginning in 1996, to the introduction of monster sacrifices, up to 2010-2012 were fine. Fuck the guy who introduced Pendulum mechanics and most other stuff after that.

>> No.8568007

if you think pendulums are a problem you're literally just being too stubborn to learn a new game mechanic, not organically responding to an issue you've personally dealt with. pendulums were only good during the brief period of time when links changed the entire extra deck mechanic and since they went back on that pendulums have been largely irrelevant
