If one likes RPGs it's pretty much confirmed one will prefer the SNES over the Genesis, right? But if one leaves out RPGs, which system has the better game library?

The funny thing is that the genesis is closer to most Jap PCs at the time, which would have made porting RPGs to SMD easier than the SFC.
The only reason they went the SFC route is because potential money profits (even though that didn't work out at all in the long run because all the SFC lot bought were square, nintendo, and enix games mostly, along with shitty anime tie-ins).

It's funny how history repeats itself.

>> No.856191

Shooters? Genesis.

Any other genre... dunno. It was a mixed bag for each.

>> No.856197

Probably still the SNES.

There are RPGs on SFC not made by Square, Enix and Nintendo?

I like the Genesis more. I will reserve my decision on RPG's because I am sporadically playing Romancing SaGa 3, though so far my favorite RPG between Genesis and SNES so far is Shadowrun for the Genesis.

Hard for the SNES to beat some of the other consoles when it came to action.

It had a few more in japan, plus a few sega CD games, but really, far less than it could have had.

It's sad too, because most of the RPGs under the umbrella I noted in >>856187 are completely forgotten or unknown by the general JP populous, since they don't have any of the bigger 3's names slapped on them.

I was thinking more along the lines of treasure hunter G, but that sorta works.
ED was a sort of remake of a PC game anyways.

I'll always prefer the SNES since that's what I grew up with, but the Genesis is no slouch.

>> No.856336

SNES, has the best platformers, best racing games, best arcade games.

Unless you're into sports SNES is the only valid choice.

>> No.856342

>>856336
Genesis has about the same quality platformers as SNES. SNES does have best racing games just because of mode 7. Arcade has best arcade games, why are you playing ports?

Genesis also has best run-n-guns, shmups and beat-em-ups.

Unless you're a hardcore JRPG fan, Genesis is the better system.

>> No.856369

>>856342

Megadrive has the best shoot 'em ups, easily, and it has a ton of them; Thunder Force III, IV, Gynoug, Hellfire, Insector X, BioHazard Battle, Steel Empire, Whip Rush.

Oh, and then there's the action platformers Revenge of Shinobi, Shinobi III, ShadowDancer, ESWAT, Strider, Alien 3, etc.

The MD/Gen did have RPGs, not many, but it had some of the greatest; Phantasy Star II, III, and IV, and Shining in the Darkness, Shining Force 1 and 2, and Sword of Vermillion, and Lunar, and Pier Solar.

But best of all, Megadrive/Genesis has Herzog Zwei.

Herzog Zwei owns everything else.

>> No.856374

Super Monaco Grand Prix on the MD/Gen is one of the all-time great racing games.
Plus Jaguar and Batman Returns on Mega CD boast fab driving action.

Herzog Zwei is an important part of the history of RTSs, but it's not something you'd seriously play today. RTS is a genre that's very hardware dependent, and 4th gen. couldn't really handle it.

Megadrive had a m68k like the Macintosh, Atari ST and Amiga. The only common Japanese computer with one was Sharp X68000.

Ex. the big name JRPGs I'd go with the Genesis, despite the SNES having a more varied library. It's mostly the Treasure games that push it over the edge for me though.

Pretty much every list of must-play SNES titles includes things like Contra 3, SCV4 and Sparkster all of which had better equivalents on Genesis. Then there's games like Starfox and F-Zero which were never any good to begin with and ports like Simcity which you'd be better off playing on another system. Then of course there's games like SMW which are great, just not as good as previous installments.

It's only things like SMK, Super Star Wars, Umihara, Cybernator and Super Metroid that keep the SNES in the running. inb4 buttmad Nintenfriends - I don't have a Sega MD anymore, but still have an SFC. The Genesis library is just that good.

I think both consoles are essential. You can't pick one over the other. Both have very good games and I'm sure you'll find games on either console that you really like (even if you're not into JRPGs).

Without Super-FX, Star Fox wouldn't exist, so probably not. But I never really bought into Super-FX since its graphical output always looked really awkward to me. But the game itself was amusing.

I hated the Nintendo made racing games. Super Mario Kart and F-Zero have you driving around on a piece of paper with an inked in track. I don't see why they had to force mode 7 onto the track, it looks terrible and constantly brings me out of the experience, especially since there are no hills, no dips, just a flat piece of paper. I'd rather stick with Road Rash.

Yeah, no. Sega fans repeat this like a mantra because of Streets of Rage, but SNES had way more high-quality beat-em-ups than the Genesis:

-Final Fight 2
-Final Fight 3
-Captain Commando
-King of Dragons
-Knights of the Round
-Turtles in TIme
-Batman Returns
-Ninja Warriors
-Undercover Cops (SFC / Japan only)

I still play Herzog Zwei today. The game is still enormous fun. Its a fucking crime it never got ported to the DS/3DS.
If Sega had not fucked up we would have got a sequel.

I actually love Mode 7 racers. I was just playing Battle Cars and Battle Racers today and I think they're pretty underrated, despite the utterly awful handling of Battle Cars. They're also bloody fantastic party games. There are still quite a few other SNES racing games I want to try out as well.

The thing is however, the Mega Drive has motherfucking Outrun 2019, which is just the best thing on wheels for the generation.
