I had no interest in something like Sonic & Knuckles collection. Instead I was emulating Genesis and Mega Drive ROM's. Sega did have some interesting PC ports. They ported a lot of their Saturn games to PC. Daytona USA and Championship Edition (Though called Deluxe, with some extra content), Sega Rally 95, Virtua Fighter 2, Last Bronx, Virtua Fighter 1 (which has both Model 1 and Remix models), Cyber Troopers Virtual On, Panzer Dragoon 1 and 2, Bug! and Bug Too!, The House of the Dead (It was a Saturn port), Manx TT, Sega Touring Car, Virtua Cop 1 and 2 (called Virtua Squad in some releases) Enemy Zero. Quite a few of these Saturn (not arcade) ports do enhanced features, like Direct 3D rendering and arcade models. Like VF2 has the option to use the arcade meshes. But at default uses the Saturn models. Last Bronx is like this too. I think House of the Dead has the option to use arcade meshes for the enemies? I forget.

I have to add this port of Earthworm Jim Special Edition for Windows 95. Not to be confused with the DOS port. I owned Earthworm Jim Special edition for the Sega CD, I remember buying it from a pawn shop. It generally is my favourite version of Earthworm Jim 1. I then later found a copy of it for Windows 95 at a department store bargain bin, mixed with a bunch of other PC games. Bought it, and was surprised at how good it looked and played on my Windows 98 SE PC. It was Windows native, ran at 60fps, supported gamepads through DInput, has the Special edition bonus content and CD tracks. I think it is better in some ways. It is a good port.

They already started making ports before that videocard. Sonic CD was ported so early, it predated DirectX and used an earlier library. They also did Baku Baku, Comix Zone, Ecco, and so on - they had an entire PC division for that.

The videocard deal was struck by Nvidia who were trying to sell a gpu chipset to Sega, for a Saturn successor (the card with the saturn ports was Nvidias first card, the NV1). Only like three Sega games used the NV1, mind you - what they did have was a handful of devs testing the hardware in 1995 to see what it could do, I think it was Don Goddard. There's an interview somewhere that details that entire deal. In the end Nvidia couldn't get working NV2 silicon out for the big demonstration to Sega, and Sega literally dropped them on the spot.
Then Nvidia restarted from scratch and did the NV3, aka RIVA128 which sold great to OEMs and the rest is history.

>The reason all these saturn ports came about was because there was some weird 3d graphics card being pushed by them at the time,

It was Nvidias first graphics card, which could render quads instead of triangles. It wasn't really based on the Saturn hardware. But Nvidia made some deals with Sega to port their Saturn games to the system using the Nvidia NV1 acceleration. Nvidia also put the NV2 into development. They thought they could sell it to Sega for a Saturn 2, that could use quads hardware rendering. But they scraped that and went with triangles and Direct X for the NV3.

To be honest, that was because from the point of view of a PC gamer, all those games were stupidly simple. They had mediocre graphics and the complexity and very few levels, you could finish most Sega PC games in one sitting in max an hour.
Actual PC games took a weekend minimum to figure out and finish at the time, simulation games could took much longer, and games with custom maps could last an order of magnitude more. You are not wrong about the value thing. Which was why most Sega- Expert Software era stuff ended up as bargain bin fodder. Most of it were just PC to Saturn ports of arcade games. Not even new PC ports. Sometimes with hardware rendering. I had Sega Rally 95 and it could be patched with a DirectX patch. Same with Daytona USA Deluxe. I think Sega Rally 2 was Sega testing WindowsCE, by making a PC version first and porting that one to Windows CE on the DC. But the devs did say that the DC port had framerate issues because of WindowsCE. The DC version is a carbon copy of the PC game:

Only Virtua Cop 2 was ported to the DC. It does look like a port of the PC version. And the PC version was a port of the Saturn game. But the DC port did get a remake with updated models and textures.

They just sold it as a PlayStation 2 box set. There were quite a few of them made (I had the Devil May Cry, Onimusha and GTA box sets myself), but the MGS Essential Collection was pretty notable since they went through the trouble of making new packaging art for each MGS game, even if the discs themselves were the same as prior releases.

>I still have trouble believing this is real even though I know it is.

It's not too hard to believe, these kinds of PC software bundles were common in the budget software market. Garfield is Garfield in TV Land. Sonic is Sonic and Knuckles PC collection seen in the first post. Though Baku Baku Animal was new to that package, and just a way for Sega to release it in the west. The packaging is the most unique part of it, with (what looks like) a copy/ paste Sonic with a copy/ paste Garfield back to back. The art looks like it was recoloured in Photoshop.

The box art really is the most noteworthy thing about that collection. I remember seeing it in a computer store, back in the day. But ultimately not getting it, because I didn't care about owning a copy of S3+ S&K for the PC, and I thought the Garfield game was the same one on the Genesis. I had no idea that the Garfield game on PC was like a different version of the Genesis/ Mega Drive game. With different level ordering/ layouts and additional stages. Compilation boxes like that were normal back in the day. Most people bought the value software collections.

This port was what got me into sonic, and retro platformers in general as a kid. My school had a tiny little computer room back in ‘06 when I was a kindergartener. After school I’d stay in extension program because both my parents worked, but I didn’t mind since I loved playing after schools anyway. I would spend a lot of time both outside playing tag, kickball, etc. with friends, but also a ton of time in the computer room playing Sonic and Knuckles on windows 98 or 95 computers (don’t remember specifically, could have been windows ME too, but it was definitely pre XP). So many fun memories in that little computer room. I was really good at Sonic 3 and Knuckles, and would eventually beat the first half of the game without a game over after a lot of practice, which pissed off the kids waiting in line to play since it wasn’t until someone got a game over that they had to give up their spot for one of the computers. Eventually I would play Sonic R pc port and a few other pc titles like this weird hot wheels game, snake, pin ball, and some decent tap to explore games. I vividly remember trying to get the sonic CD port to work, because the jewel box case looked really cool, but unfortunately it wouldn’t run on the computers for seemingly no reason. Thankfully I was able to play the game in my GameCube back home and I fell in love with it’s style and gameplay, even if it was just the USA soundtrack. Man this port gave me such good memories of my childhood and the games that shaped my taste today, thanks Anon.
