That's the first time I read about any such deal between Just System, Square Soft and Nintendo. Googling it in Japanese, it turns out this was apparently for game development and an online structure for the 64DD. However, the project failed to materialize due to Square Soft withdrawing support for the 64 for the PlayStation, which is part of the reason Nintendo were bitter towards Square Soft for years.

This is the first time I've seen Nintendo Power give a hint about how to skip the company logo sequence that plays when a game is starting up. It seems that with this game, you have to turn on the power, immediately press Reset, and then press Start repeatedly. Or you can just sit and wait like one of those LOSERS who don't have a subscription (yet!!) and who barely know the first thing about Playing It Loud.

Is this one Final Fantasy prototype screenshot the very first piece of information we've gotten from this magazine about how N64 games will actually look? I mean I don't know what computer it's even running on, but it does look more or less N64-ish, unlike most of the 3D concept art or whatever that they've shown in previous N64-related articles.

Yeah they've said that, but I think that's too unclear to count - those ports looked pretty good, but they also displayed the characteristic blur of the N64, whereas the arcade versions did not. In her N64 version the Cruis'n USA trophy girl gets like half as many pixels as in the arcade, plus a bilinear smoothing effect on top of that... A reader wouldn't expect that kind of change after having read Nintendo Power's claims; they'd expect to simply see the arcade game, period. Killer Instinct, too, gets a few less animation frames than in the arcade and (in some cases) uglier, simpler-looking stages; and again, the extra blur is there, though it isn't as prominent since the characters are pre-rendered.

Meanwhile this screenshot shows more or less how Mario will soon look: stylized, doll like models, sharp edges between model and background, nothing but soft edges and gradients within the model's texturing/lighting-based details, and very limited detail in general.

I mean it's not a huge deal... I doubt that many (if any) kids were actually disappointed when it turned out that the N64 wasn't quite as powerful as the arcade hardware. It was mind-blowing enough to see real-time 3D graphics in the home (for those not already used to them thanks to some other platform, at least), and the ubiquitous and sometimes excessive texture smoothing could easily be taken as a great-looking improvement over pixelation by people who were not yet experienced enough with 3D computer graphics to expect anything better.

Probably a lot of kids didn't even notice the differences.
