The entire business with Hot Rod and Ultra Magnus still doesn't make sense to me. I get that they wanted to sell the next generation of toys, but they brought back Megatron as Galvatron, why not Optimus Prime? Why only replace him temporarily with Ultra Magnus instead of just going straight to Hot Rod? Why the hell introduce "Optimus Prime's best friend" only right before killing Prime off? Where the fuck was he before?
It makes the game make even less sense. They didn't see the fucking movie, and therefor wouldn't have known that Ultra Magnus was ever in charge, since Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime was in charge in S3 and until Optimus was revived. Yet they have you play as Ultra Magnus, then you get to play as Rodimus after beating the game twice. How did they know? Or was the plan to have you play as the 2nd in command?
Fucking Transformers. It was confusing as shit to me as a kid, and I'm still confused to this day. It's a goddamn kids cartoon, it shouldn't be this confusing.

I’d say it’s probably the worst proper game on the Famicom up to that point that wasn’t some bizarre experiment or just a very poor port (Bokusuka Wars for example). Even something like Super Monkey which is a total disaster still has some charm in how atrocious and bizarre it is. I’d say it’s the worst game on the system, but Hana no Star Kaidou exists

Lemme talk to you about Astrotrain.
Everyone else is turning into jets and cars and tanks and helicopters and shit. Astrotrain turns into a fucking train and a fucking clone of the space shuttle. Every single time they use Astrotrain as a transport, they load up into his train form, then he turns into the space shuttle and they fly off. He never seems to need tracks in his train form, and can fly in train form as well. So why not just take off in train form, or not bother with the train form in the first place? Because it's fucking Astrotrain, he has three forms, and they are gonna show you each one.

I had the Ultra Magnus toy. The car hauler looks cooler than a regular semi, and you can have a few of the car Autobots fit onto the trailer. As a bonus, Magnus' cabin portion is pretty much a white colored Optimus. The movie had him voiced by Robert Stack which was the host of Unsolved Mysteries, a cool show that I also liked at the time. It was a shame they almost killed the character in the movie too.

There were rewrites a plenty. One even had instead of the matrix, Optimus Prime's ghost in the EXACT same role. So that might be why they recolored Powered Convoy so it had a white inner robot. But nobody knows for certain. Look into the production of the movie, there's a lot of neat stuff.

Older stuff, actually. Powered Convoy was an existing toy they grabbed up and recolored and sold as a Transformer. The TF Movie characters (Hot Rod, Galvatron, et all) were the first time the characters were designed first and toys were made second.

Then they made the movie with the sole motivation of killing off half the cast, to not surprisingly, sell new toys. The underlying lore is going to be kind of ass. Tl;dr selling toys.

I used to play this shit in my Famiclone after watching some Mecha anime back in the late 90s and pretend I was driving the real deal.

imagine having no health bar so you always die in one hit and enemies whose shots are virtually impossible to dodge and you have Comvoy no Nazo

The game itself doesn't seem particularly terrible, it has some bad design cues here and there. The real issue is the sheer difficulty of the game, it feels like the programmers felt the game wasn't challenging enough and they went full kaizo with the level design and enemy placements.
