This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related. Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first

So, I have a great TV that was a gift from a dearly departed family friend and I use it a ton, but I was thinking about RGB modding it because it lacks anything aside from composite and RF. If I mod it, can I just use an off the shelf RGB console cable to plug into the TV, or do I have to mod my consoles as well? I'm NTSC, so I am lacking in knowledge of SCART and stuff.

Finally got around to tinkering with the 25" Sony XBR I got a few months ago. It has some purity/magentization issues around the edges; it's VERY particular about which direction it wants to face. I was worried the issue might be permanent, but after a bunch of yoke finagling, ring tweaking, and ultimately just taping some damn magnets to the side of the casing, I got it looking pretty decent; some minor convergence issues in a couple of corners that I'll try to fix later, but all-in-all, really nice for a 36-year-old set. I feel like the degausser might be weak or failing, because I managed to clear up a lot of the discoloration by making it kiss my PVM and firing the degauss on that, which is WAY more powerful.

>>8541764
>been idly considering upgrading to an external sound setup
This is the best thing you can do for your gaming setup, new or old. People really overlook how much audio counts for immersion. Modern audio equipment sucks so hard, too; flatscreen speakers and soundbars are such garbage. Getting any cheap old amp and a decent pair of speakers is such a worthwhile investment if you have the space for them.

>>8541060
My grandparents had this exact TV. I remember my grandma watching her stories with the audio BLARING because she was hard of hearing. To this day, The Young and The Restless theme being blasted through a crackling mono speaker takes me right back to my childhood. Good find, anon.

I probably only see about 25% of them for free. Most people are still asking between 75 and 200 dollars even for shitty old garbage sets. Although given that a lot of them keep going unsold, it probably wouldn't be hard to talk a more reasonable seller down. Problem is people are hella unreasonable lately.

Highly recommend getting a better audio than integrated speakers, and you don't even need to spend a fortune to get decent audio.

>> No.8544006

>>8543207
Even "big ass" speakers are cheap as fuck nowadays; nobody wants to waste the room on them, and stripping wires is too scary for the average retard consumer. The only issue is when you're browsing craigslist or whatever, you gotta watch out for the boomers; they have no concept of depreciation and think everything they bought 20 years ago should be worth 99% of the original price just because it "still works".

It's weird how rare they are on the aftermarket these days. They are old though, and I guess a LOT of them got junked. When I was a kid, me and pretty much ALL of my friends and family had console sets. Stand-alone sets were always just spares, or junk you'd find in a hotel room.

Sometime in the 80s, the television really transitioned away from being a piece of furniture to being just electronic equipment. Before that it was far more common for home electronics to be disguised as furniture, with console stereos and record players and what-have-you; I feel like displaying bare "equipment" in a room where you might entertain guests was culturally frowned upon. It wasn't until the 80s when the average American truly started to embrace technology.

Murrica. Massachusetts, to be exact. Yeah, eBay is useless for CRTs because of scalpers and assholes. Plus, who wants to ship a CRT anyway? But around these parts, "Trinitron" is one of the meme words that calls retro vidya fags like a moth to a flame. That particular set is in high demand because it's one of the only consumer TVs in the states that came with an RGB input, and it's 25 inches which is bigger than most PVMs. The only bigger professional RGB monitor I'm aware of is a 30 inch made by Mitsubishi, I think.

I was just surprised it wasn't already snapped up after two hours. About 10 years ago when I snagged a PVM off of craigslist, I was using an independent app to alert me to new listings, and I managed to call mere minutes after it went up. The guy told me that, after we hung up, he got FLOODED with calls until he finally took the listing down. He probably regretted listing it for free.

Was walking out in town today and found some tiny little 10'' consumer CRT at a thrift shop, which was a surprise since I thought they stopped accepting them.

Sadly it had no remote and was RF/Composite only, but for only 5$ I thought about getting it anyway because I thought it might have made a good guinea pig to try doing an RGB mod to, but then I realized I'd have to walk home carrying it so fuck that. Maybe if it's still there next time I swing back in that area with my car I'll get it but I bet they'll just throw it out. It's only some literally who brand consumer set anyway.

Any console that can output RGB as is need not be modded for that. Analog TV signals are simple enough that modding it is definitely worth it even if you're unfamiliar about electronics. I'd say modding the TV or a console that doesn't have RGB output is about as complicated, pretty much every device produces RGB before converting it to other signals, and the TV just converts other signals back to RGB, so skipping that entire part is rather simple in theory.

The beast is home, gotta say the 3 wheel dolly made it not too bad outside the turn at the top of the steps. Holy shit that made the last 2 steps insane. Somewhere along the way I crushed the power cord so I had to do a quick and dirty splice. Outside of that it made it intact.

Last CRT I had was a curved 32 inch, this one being a flat 36 feels so much bigger then just 4 inches more. It's got good geometry outside of the droopy bow at the top but between reseating the neck and the adjustment rings I bet i'll be able to get it so it's not noticeable in game.

Fell for the CRT meme, bought an old TV. Got it home and realised it's 50hz. Thought, ok that's fine because they refresh really fast right. When you see them scrolling in a video it's just because the fps of screen and camera are mismatched. I think...

Anyway, I can visibly see the refresh/blinking and the picture seems like it moves up and down a little bit. Didn't see any adjustment in the menus except colour and contrast etc. Is this normal? Am I spoiled by LCD? Did I just get a shit TV? Is it 50hz vs 60hz?

>> No.8566167

It's definitely not true because I remember Phantasy Star Online on Dreamcast had a 50hz and 60hz option at the start. Some TVs simply couldn't run in 60hz. Also, 50hz players couldn't play online with 60hz players. They had different servers.

Ok, I want you to think. How would an average euro kid in the 90s feed thier console pal 60? I can't believe I'm getting into this shit show again. Pal 60 wasn't a thing in the 90s was barely a thing in the middle of the 00s. Fact remains pal fucking blows for games

>> No.8566498

>>8566378
>Most CRTs in the 90’s could do 60hz
No they couldn't. Most PAL CRTs in the 90s were 50hz. Only in the very late 90s and early 2000s did 60hz become dominant. It was common for households to have both (Old/newer sets) until 50hz disappeared completely. This mattered because consoles released around 2000 required 60hz for some games. So as a kid trying to borrow the spare TV (Usually a shitter/older one) it was kind of annoying.

>> No.8568215

>>8566498
Do you actually have proof that 50Hz CRTs will not sync to 60Hz. I have never come across a CRT which would not sync to 60Hz, and there is really no reason why they would not do so, the analog circuitry in a CRT derives its timing from the video signal.
