your honest opinion on the Select button?

>> No.8549281

it’s there when you need it

>> No.8549286

Based and soulful. You know games when strayed from the path of God when the select button no longer selected things like in the NES days.

start stops games
select brings up menu

based and soulful

>> No.8549304

It's useful. I played the PCE port of Street Fighter II the other day on my two-button controller and had what was probably my most amusing select button experience to date.

Exactly.

The unsung hero of the video game world. People can look down it all they want, but I remember the first time I saw an N64 controller, my first thought wasn't "How the heck am I supposed to hold this thing with my little kid hands?" it was "Where's the select button?" Getting rid of it costed Nintendo dearly. It's no coincidence that they wouldn't experience success again until the Wii, where the select button made its triumphant return.

>>8549404
This. You know what that sad, lonesome red start button looks like on the N64 controller? A clown nose. Nintendo clowned around with us select fans, and they paid the price dearly.

The inventory button is either start or triangle, you fools. Select is more akin to a minor mechanic change button, like this example >>8549304

Not nearly as bad as the GameCube controller’s Start/Pause button. Make up your fucking mind, start or pause. Pick one label.

"Start and Select" has such a nice ring to it. It's a shame it's getting phased out in modern consoles for names like "Plus and Minus" or "Home and Share"

I'm fine with home or options but share is the absolute worst.

>> No.8549824

>>8549613
Honestly plus and minus are the only ones I don't like because they're just pointless abstractions for the concept of a menu button, when you could just call them menu buttons.

Also I'll never get the people who don't want controllers to have home menu or screenshot buttons, that's fucking stupid.

>> No.8549848

Wizards and Warriors treats the select button as a third button for special attacks, but it's kinda awkward to use.

>> No.8549854

>>8549824
Plus and Minus simulate the L and R buttons on the Wiimote at least, they turn pages forward and back on the main menu if no other peripheral is plugged in. There's also a separate button for the menu button.

it does on the title screen menus in old nes games. I think it was intended to switch between game modes

When Pause, Select and Triangle bring up 3 different types of menus, you know your game is 200% based.

>> No.8549965

>>8549848
That is weird. If they went with start instead of select for that it probably would've felt pretty natural but I can understand why they didn't

>> No.8549990

>>8549965
there are a few NES games that use select for pause and start for something else, probably for that reason. somehow I can't name a single one atm, but I'm sure I'm not lying about this.
